http://www.fiveg.net/ will give you vintage gear lust. Wall of Prophet 5s, a few 303s and 808s under the counter, a wall of Eurorack, they had the MFB Dominion there, a Buchla Music Easel handy. ARPs, WASPs, Solinas etc. all there, it's ridiculous. It's steps from Harajuku station.

The attached photo is from their Eurorack wall. I took a few other pics but didn't want to play tourist there. Someone else was more brazen than I taking video: https://vimeo.com/31677965

As for most conventional stuff, you're not going to find much of a price break there, maybe a bit with currency exchange. There was a multi-story mall, it might have been one of the Marui one in Shinjuku that had more consumer music stuff, decent selection but not particularly inspiring prices. To give you an idea, it was cheaper to get an Otamatone shipped to me from Amazon than it was to buy it in Japan.

Finally sold the DX7IIFD. Looking to fill the stand with something 80's hybrid. For the same price I have the options of a Korg DSS-1 or an Ensoniq SQ-80. Any advice from those with experience with either? I'm working from specs and YouTube demos.

Either that or double down and go modular, and forever be a slave. Decisions, decisions.

Dayum, when were you there? I was there in January and either they've drastically upsized or downsized the modular section.

"Next to maid outfits" only narrows it down to half of the shops there... But yeah, the website has easy directions, you just have to be used to vertical shops meaning you can't rely on eyeballing storefronts for synths (it's on the 5th floor or such). Right on the corner before you go into the main Alley/Street of the fashion shops.

They almost lost the ability to sell them entirely when people realized a ban on selling used electronics (intended for safety reasons) about to come into effect meant no more vintage synths or consoles: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2006/03/vintage-japanese-synths-electronics-saved-from-ban-really/

Since it looks like you want a hybrid that can also sample why not just get a full on sampler like the ASR-10?

I was there in late September, early October last year. Just in time to miss the Redbull Music academy talks which was a massive miscalculation on my part. The guy in front of the modular stuff was some french bloke trying to get a deal.
Had a lot of cool experiences. Musically; FiveG, the noise record shop, and the bar tender in kyoto pulling out a Les Paul and shredding when he discovered we had a mutual friend were pretty much on the top.

I like mine but it can be pretty limited. Maybe try the iOS app first before committing. Also, what's your friend want it for exactly? It does Kraftwerk primitive electronic drums pretty well, but ehhnnn, the engine is simple and limited, polyphony is limited, the step sequencer is sort of hit or miss. I dunno, it's dirty fun and it should be easy to find one for really cheap, but there's almost certainly a better choice.

I didn't know there was an app that's a good idea to use that for a test drive.

As far as what he plans to use it for, I think it's mostly something to jam with for ideas and occasionally record into Ableton.

I have convinced my wife that "investing" $2,600 or so in the weak Euro is a sound decision (see what I did there?) and have therefore specced what I think is probably a great starter modular at Thomann.

Here's the ModularGrid view: ohmagawd

I'm also planning to get a Doepfer Dark Time to round out the wanking on robot farts opportunities.

Goons with some actual modular setups (you know who you are) - how differently would you configure Babby's First Modular, bearing in mind that Babby is in no way new to synthesis or electronics (i.e. I actually understand what almost all of those modules do)?

Am I missing some obvious utility modules that will frustrate the hell out of me (more Multiples, maybe)? Should I sub in some non-Doepfer (but still European; this is a ForEx gambit don't forget) modules like a European version of the omnipresent Maths rather than patching up things similar to their output?

Note that I also have a very pretty wood 84hp case (thanks to Wafflehound - I'm living proof that you can't just dip your toes into Eurorack) that is currently empty, so I'll have room for expansion in the future (oh god, I am such an idiot).

You always want more multiples and mixers. You can kinda cheat with those stacky cables but I also hate them and its just nicer having multiples and mixers. I'm actually toying with the idea of adding another shelf onto my modular and making a huge row of multiples between the tiers. Otherwise that looks like a pretty sensible box to start with. Kudos for not quing up 700 different complex algorithm generators and zero utility modules. You would know your use cases better than I but the only thing I might question is the PLL stuff. In my experience the fantasy of pitch to cv processing is a lot more enticing than the reality.

Cool, thanks. I'll add some mults, seems like a reasonable / cheap thing to do.

WRT the PLL module, it's more about getting interesting digital (i.e. trigger) patterns while the PLL is chasing something that is random or slewing. Also I was going to build a module around a P2V / V2P converter, and maybe wire up a PLL function, and it's cheaper (my time) to play with Doepfer's than to build it. I was shocked that it already existed, actually. :)

It's not bad but I'd probably do two more oscillators for a system of that size. You seem to have way more modifiers than actual signal generators. Or if you really only need two VCO's, I'd lose most of your bottom row. It depends on how you're planning to use this - in serial ("one big patch") or in parallel (multiple voice doing different things at the same time).

Echo more sound sources, I'd drop the second 110-1 and get two 110-2s. You lose that larger range switch and not-really sine BUT it's already got the FM and sync points brought out to the front panel. I've got an A-136 DIS and it just kind of makes whatever I feed it sound samey, I end up using it for CV more than audio and am probably dumping it, you could put two A172s in the same space and for similar tricks and more. You might want to scope MFB's dual LFO. Built in S&H on one of them, and it's normalled to modulate itself. Love it. Their VCA is also nice in that the second CV in is only active while there's positive voltage on the first so it's easier to patch tremolo in, multiple outs too. The dual ADSR is great too, two outs for each EG, hold stage is great for percussion sounds. I guess check out MFB in general. Dunno if din.sync's stuff is cheaper in EU (he's UK) but the Amnesia and Modseq are great little utility sequencers.

Along the lines of the last few posts, it was my birthday this past weekend and I decided to give myself the gift of spending too much money on a Eurorack.

I ordered the "cheap" Doepfer a-100lc9 9U case, but I'm attempting to only fill up 6U at the moment so I have a little room to grow. So far I've mostly got a Make Noise/Mutable Instruments/Expert Sleepers mixture. Here's roughly what it will look like once the shipments come in.

While I would love a Rene/PP+Brains/Metropolis, I'm hoping to take advantage of the ES-3 for sequencing while I'm getting situated. Can you think of anything that's missing or would help tie my current setup together?

I know the DSI Curtis Filter is a little out of place, but Control Voltage had it used and I couldn't help myself. :(

Since it seems I'm somewhat responsible for this, I feel obligated to warn you that it is possible that you could get charged customs. US customs is really lax; I've made international purchases regularly for many years and have never been charged duty on anything, including several synth orders from Thomann and Erica. But my purchases have all been under $1k, and they might pay more attention to a much larger / more expensive shipment. If you do get dinged I believe it's only about 5% (but please double check if concerned).

Having said that, it looks like a cool setup. I have the xpander filter and the wave mult and really like both of them. The wave mult is a rather tweaky in operation compared to other wavefolders, but I like the sounds from it. Personally I would remove all the mults and get intellijel hubs instead. Case real estate is expensive and there's not much reason to put a mult in there unless it's going to be powered/buffered, in my opinion. Functionally the Doepfer mults are fine though. Also if you haven't already, look at the A-171-2 and the A-141-2 as possible replacements for some ADSRs/LFOs (for example, remove one of each and add either of those two modules). That would basically trade off quantity of sources in exchange for more flexibility/CV control - just something to think about.

That's super kind of you, thanks. :glomp: Having ordered, really, far too much poo poo from other countries in my life, I had researched duties on electronics into the US and come up with ~5% also.

The Intellijel hub is really neat - I think I'm a little too OC to have them sitting around outside the case though. Maybe I'll change my tune and want to reclaim those 8HP later, though, so I'll keep them in mind. I appreciate the heads-up on the A-171-2 and A-141-2 also. The A-171-2 in particular looks (and sounds!) like a beast, I might just add one.
