Why does where it pitches matter at all? It's either hitting the stumps or it isn't.

There is a degree of uncertainty about a ball's potential direction after it pitches. HawkEye is good at determining where the ball pitches (which is the same as determining where a tennis ball lands), but less-good at determining where the ball will go after it pitches/bounces. Because of this uncertainty you can't say that an umpire's not-out on a ball that pitches outside leg is "clearly incorrect".

So basically the umpire screwed that one up.

Most likely, but not to a certainty. The pitch has cracks and grooves and bumps that Hawkeye cannot simulate, so hypothetically there is a chance that the ball could have bounced strangely and missed the stumps.

e: and this hypothetical chance is far less likely when the pitching is in-line and the impact is in-line, or so the theory of DRS goes.

But the ball hit the pads right in front of the stumps. The umpire saw it was in line after the bounce.

Also you guys, you can't be LBW if the ball pitches outside leg stump. That's just how LBW works.

What would've happened if the umpire had given that out? Could it have been overturned on that pitching?

Our review identified changes needed to be made and, in Stephen, we have a coach who has a reputation for demanding the highest standards.

If the ball pitches outside of leg stump, the batsman cannot be dismissed leg before wicket, this is due to some lovely leg side tactics that would be employed otherwise that encouraged awful cricket. Because 50.1% of the ball pitched outside leg, the on field umpire's call of not out cannot be overturned as there is judged to be sufficient doubt.

Nope, not even then. if it hits the pad outside off with no shot offered then it can still be out which is what you're thinking of.

If this World Cup is remembered for anything it will be when the word "batters" overtook the word "batsman" in common parlance.

Yeah it pisses me off because a lot of commentators are doing it now. Seems like something they've been told to say.
