Hodgepodge posted:Like, if my son came come and told me this poo poo happened, I'd have concerns about that teacher and would probably drop in the next day before school to talk to the administration and the teacher about my concerns. The summary would be "explain this behaviour in a way which reassures me that I am not leaving my son with a psychopath in a position of authority over him for several hours each day." Yeah if this is really that problematic Annie can just take it to her dad.

There's even precedent since Jones tried the same thing with her too. has it ever been explicitly stated that Anthony isn't a robot???

Fried Chicken posted:Absolutely, Snape was a god awful teacher, abusive and cruel to students without any justification. The only reason Snape was still a teacher was plot. Dumbledore needed him around to eventually be a double agent and turn on Voldermort, and that's about it. If he wasn't useful I bet Dumbles would have kicked him out on his rear end like, immediately. Then again Hogwarts is a school where students were once hung up by their fingernails. Snape's pretty nice by those standards. Basically, the court has Tony there for reasons other than teaching.

Hogwarts was unbelievably mismanaged in all imaginable aspects, up to and including forcing students who have well known dangerous destinies to just keep going to school instead of focusing on the end of the world stuff first and then, y'know, take night classes after that's out of the way.

Hodgepodge posted:I'm guessing there's some leeway for dickery in a Mmm. Well. Snape is a caricature, and I actually went to a British private school. While there were, variously, teachers who slept with students, teachers who spent all day browsing porn in their offices, teachers who drank themselves half to death and teachers who had nervous breakdowns and started sleeping under their desks, I don't think I ever saw anything like this sort of abuse. I mean, I'll grant you there might be a species of rich bastard who thinks a beating a day builds character, but I've never met one (probably all went to Merchiston), and the ones I did meet were rather more in the "I want my precious darling coddled and spoilt" mould. Also, the school administration were always eager to placate parents and quash even the slightest hint of wrongdoing- parents were customers, after all. And I don't think fee-paying schools actually are free from government- they're schools you have to pay to get into, not sovereign countries, and mistreatment of children is one of these things that get people worked into a lather. That said, the Court specifically seems to be a sovereign country and a law unto itself, so in this case you might be right.

You know, I forget if someone brought it up already though I imagine it's come up, but I'm really beginning to think Anthony intends to use Antimony to bring Surma back to life. I didn't before, but remembering the weird bone spear thing, and the chapter dealing closely with how students from the forest get new bodies, it seems like foreshadowing. I mean, the court can just make you a body and stuff your soul in it if it's available. What with Annie having Surma's "spark", it seems like her body might be on ice somewhere just waiting to have Annie's spark ripped out and put back in corpse mom.

Okay, so, what exactly is this guy's plan here? Is he trying to make Annie lose her temper so that he'll have an excuse to do... something? I mean, he's dedicated the first fifteen minutes of his class to openly tormenting her in front of everybody. Teaching is evidently not a priority here, so he's got to have some kind of scheme.

I have never been more anxious about any other (web?) comic updating more than I am with this chapter. On a side note, I got the paperback volume 1 in today. I wish Topaco/USPS was a bit better about the package. The bottom of the padded envelope was clearly thrown across the ground at one point (dirt embedded in it), as the back cover is slightly dirty. But man, the first paperback is A. small (8.25" x 5.75"), B. really nicely done. The colr and binding is nice. It looks like something that could be in a big bookstore and sold professionally. I could do some pictures if anyone really cared.

Also, still a jerk" over "trying to revive Surma".
