I saw Craig Foss standing alone, looking vey bored outside Kmart in Hastings handing out flyers. He had the "why am I doing this" look on his face. My wife told him that she didn't wAnt his pamphlet of lies. I took one. Looked at it, laughed out loud, turned around and put it in the asb atm bin thing. It was good to know that he watched me do all that.

In a week where the RoastBusters report came out with damning criticism of NZ Police's culture and actions and a couple of other hilarious cases came to light* Rodney Hide has opinions about the Police:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/opinion/news/article.cfm?c_id=466&objectid=11421086

quote:

New Zealand police cars are a disgrace. They are too often dirty and scruffy. They send the message that the police don't care and lack pride.
...
And the minister and commissioner should be asking themselves: "Why are the cars patrolling our towns and cities so scruffy and dirty? And what am I doing about it?"

* Top Cop "forgets" investigation files in cupboard: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11421129

Basically gently caress Rodney Hide, in the past, now and forever. We have a Police force with terrible culture, no accountability and nothing seems to be changing however the real issue here is muddy Police cars.

I do understand it. I also understand that the exact same poo poo that everyone got so wound up about in Epsom is going on here. I also know it's to the benefit of one of the most outspoken racists in New Zealand society. I also remember Winston insisting that human rights should be dished out via referendum during the gay marriage debate. And I also understand that Labour would crawl over broken glass to work with him ahead of the Greens.

I'm just not so blinded by a hatred of National that I'm prepared to overlook some stuff, I guess.

It's almost like there's an opportunity for a credible third-party candidate. If only the leader of said party could bring himself to actually endorse his candidate. See above.

While I dislike the idea that single electorates can swing the balance of power, as in Epsom & Ohariu (to a lesser extent), and agree that the whole Northland situation is in the same category, I'm less outraged by it because a) National did it too, and b) this time it means that National might lose. Yes, there's bias involved, but I don't think National can really complain about "all the other parties ganging up on them" when they've done the exact same thing in multiple elections to engineer victories.

As we've discussed before, using a ranking voting system for Electorates would virtually eliminate this problem.

This isn't so much as Winston out-waffling a relative newcomer, as it is making him look like a patsy, despite the very obvious coaching going on from Steven Joyce from behind the camera. Peters' campaign has focused on an idea that National are taking the Northland region in general and the Northland electorate in particular for granted, and Osborne's performance here will do nothing to cast any doubt towards that. All it does is raise questions about National - was this guy really the best they could rustle up? They obviously know what Sabin did, so they surely knew he would be stepping down sooner or later, so surely, surely, they had fair notice that they'd need to find someone to step in. If they didn't, then did they assume Sabin would just get away with it? Joyce was obviously in the room with Osborne to coach him through the debate, and if it was Joyce's advice to Osborne to immediately start interrupting Peters, making him sound like a whiny 12 year-old, then what good is his advice?

Guess we watched different interviews then because Peters talked over Osborne, Parkin and everyone else as well. But I guess that's just him sticking it up em or whatever else you use to justify overlooking his senile racist bullshit and Osborne 'just being a whiny 12 year-old' because it might work out in your favour for once.

I thought using a ranking voting system just ended with people ranking whoever they like at #1 and then just numbering the rest in whatever order they appear on the page/not numbering them at all because people are lazy dumb cunts?

They're also more awesome than Slingshot. They have a call centre that is actually populated by people who know what they're doing.

Story time: I was switching from Slingshot to Snap for pricing reasons + Slingshot's "unlimited" service was utter crap. My Slingshot account was randomly terminated one evening, but a quick phone call to Snap got my new account set up & running fairly quickly. I'm also paying $80/week for the base "naked" plan + unlimited data (should be $95) because of a deal they had to attract new customers (which they also extended to existing customers).

Easily the best telco I've dealt with.

Amnesty International 'survey' shows that people don't want to be spied on. In other news, the sky is blue and the grass is green.

I wonder if there's any figures from something that isn't a human rights lobby group that might be a little more reliable?

quote:

The survey of 1000 people by Fairfax Media-Ipsos found that a total of 75.3 per cent were "very concerned'', "somewhat concerned'' or "a little concerned'' about plans to allow the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) to monitor New Zealanders as well as foreigners.

The poll result was contrary to Prime Minister John Key's assertion that New Zealanders cared little about the GCSB bill. He has previously pointed out the small number of submissions on the GCSB law change compared to the public response on proposed changes to snapper quotas.

Just over half of the survey respondents said they trusted Government to protect their right to privacy, while 40 per cent did not.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11112107

Even more recent:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11412551

quote:

Poll suggests most 'fine' with bugging neighbours:
A majority of respondents to an online survey are "fine" with revelations that New Zealand's electronic spy agency intercepts communications in the Pacific.

An online unscientific Herald poll of up to 11,600 people showed more than 50 per cent of people said they were "fine with it". Some 42 per cent replied to say they were "incensed - this is unacceptable". Six per cent did not believe the claims were true.

Nah let's defend the unlawful spying of a government agency that was under the stewardship of the prime minister of the country.

ASK ME ABOUT THE BEARS
Most people won't understand the ramifications on what spying on allies means considering most people think politicians are all liers, fools and crooks - so spying on politicians means very little.

And when it comes to human rights it's even worse. Most people I've spoken to (admitedly a limited number) don't even know what rights they have let alone the fact those rights need protecting.

Fortunately there are plenty of outstanding people who do stand up for said rights on their behalf!
