Orvin posted:How good is the TIE Defender? Is it useful enough long term to get one now just for the predator pilot ability? 1) It's...okay. I don't see it used much in the meta these days, it's a little overcosted IMO and the white K-turn is cool but also really predictable since your 1 and 2-hard turns are red. 2) Autothrusters, PTL, then Test Pilot for Expert Handling or Outmaneuver or whatever you like. Chardaan to keep it cheap, or Proton Rockets to add punch. 3) Nope! Model paint doesn't matter.

Played with 2 Gold Squadron Y's with Ion Turrets and Dash in the Outrider with a Hvy Las Cannon for the first time yesterday night. I gave him PTL and Kyle Katarn. It was fun being able to 360 fire with all three ships. I got to deal out a hefty load of ion fire at a couple of Syck fighters and Scum Boba and then pick them off at range 2-3 with Dash. Kyle Katarn really didn't seem to help much but I probably need to stress out Dash more. Does anyone have any suggestions on what co pilot might work better for a 100pt build?

The PtL and Kyle option becomes a lot more powerful when you also add engine upgrade. Boost, barrel roll, and then also focus is powerful. Also adds a lot more maneuverability when you're only able to take a green maneuver from the stress. If you go with something instead of PtL, I think recon specialist is a strong choice.

Tried a Kavil/Drea Renthal/Dace Bonearm (so 2 scum Y-Wings and the HWK) Ion Turret list, which I mentioned before against an Emon, Drea Renthal and Syndicate Thug list. Since neither of my opponents ships had turrets (well, one of them had BTL), I was able to ion up his Y-Wings and after their initial volley they were out of the fight. Emon was rolling really well and having three proximity mines was pretty crazy. By the time I had finished up destroying the Y-Wings, I only had a single HP left on Drea and Kavil, while Emon had lost his shields. After losing Drea I managed to ion Emon and he was a millimeter away from ending up outside the board and there was no way for him to avoid getting out next turn: I thought I had it won since I had made kavil attempt to move away, but my opponent had one proximity mine left and thus managed to destroy Kavil before he got to move. Incredibly fun game. I might drop the ion turret on kavil and give him an blaster turret instead because my damage output was severely lacking. I then flew my 2 Advanced/1 Defender list against a really interesting HWK (the guy that strips evade/focus) + Kavil + Guri list. Both Kavil and Guri had opportunist and Guri has sensor jammer: this meant that if he managed to strip my ship of focus/evade, Kavil could potentially fire 5 dice out of his blaster turret, with a re-roll from an A4 Agromech! I managed to get rid of the HWK fairly easily though and Stele and Vader managed to rip things apart. List is solid, but I really like that Kavil + Blaster Turret + Opportunist + Agromech list.

Personally I think the TIE Defender is more than worth it for Predator. It's a seriously useful EPT, one of my go-to upgrades if I want to add a few more points and give someone a little upgrade. I agree that the TIE Defender is a bit pricey (starting at 30 points), but it's also a serious fighter ... 3 red, 3 green, 3 hull, 3 shields. That's nothing to sneeze at, it's impressive as all hell. They're durable and they're powerful, and the white-4K turn makes them good at twisting around a lot of arc-dodgers and jousters alike. Throw a cannon on them, and they're no joke.

The problem with Defenders is that, at any point, you have to think 'why am I flying this instead of just flying a Phantom'. Whisper with VI + ACD is 37 points, which is the same as an HLC low PS Defender, and only one point more than a naked Vessery. I love defenders and love flying them, but there's always that point where I know that I could do much better if i replaced it in a list with a phantom.

TIE defender should've had a crew slot. Rebel captive on that thing would've gone a long way to making it survivable.

A lot of high-PS pilots get the first shot on Whisper if you give them VI (which is sadly necessary given the current meta), and she's so breakable. I haven't had a problem with Phantoms since January, I've been really good about pounding them into paste early on. Honestly, I like seeing Phantoms come onto the table now, because I've gotten good enough about vaping them. We've reached Peak Phantom, and now they're trending downward.

The problem with the Defender is the B-Wing B-wings were undercost by a few points and ended up being so much more efficient than regular X-wings that FFG prob didnt want to make the same mistake again so they bumped the Defender up over what it should be by a few points. That and the fact that its only real role is as a jousting ship in a world where noone jousts anymore.

Comparing the Defender to a similarly-priced ship (the Aggressor) makes me really sad as well, cause holy poo poo is the aggressor so much better at doing the heavy fighter role than the Defender is, without even going into how much more customisable the aggressor is.

The defender has a nice set of wings you can use to convert your other (better) ships, so it's not totally worthless!

Maybe if we'd gotten a model based off the fractalsponge redesign or the Starships of the Galaxy art instead of the squat monstrosity we ended up with, the Defender might be the third prettiest TIE variant (behind the Interceptor and Avenger).

I thought we were getting the cool Tie defender mark 1 from SWCCG but instead the model has wing struts that are way too long. Either that or I was tricked by the perspective the whole time and it's always looked like poo poo. However, Onyx 2 is viewed straight-on and the struts do look much shorter than the model we got.

dunno if this has already been addressed but question about Xizor's ability. It reads: "When defending, a friendly ship at Range 1 may suffer 1 uncancelled hit or crit result instead of you." When I first read it, I assumed Xizor could only pass 1 uncancelled hit or crit to a single friendly ship. Now when I read it though, because it says "a friendly ship at Range 1" instead of "one friendly ship at Range 1", does that mean if two friendly ships are both at range 1, each could suffer an uncancelled hit? That would make Xizor crazy durable if he's accompanied by a swarm of black sun soldiers or pirates.

Shame on all of you, these beautiful deathtraps are wonderful and perfect.

I hacked apart an x-wing so I could make it into a closed s-foil config but I might just do that instead. Z's are always useful. I don't mind hacking apart a y-wing and tie fighter for the leftover parts and if the x-wing becomes useful again I'll just stick the y's engines on it.

Speaking of Uglies. One of my Y-Wings is warped to poo poo because they're basically cheap plastic minis created in China (like everything). I'm thinking about trying to heat it up and bend it so the main fuselage and the engine nacelles are straight. A cursory Googling reveals that they don't take to heating or hot water very well. Any advice? It's either I try to warp things back or I'm taking an exacto and supergluing this hunk of junk back together.
