HOLY gently caress I can't believe that.

We're going down the road theorizing what could be wrong, it shakes like a mofo and is getting worse. We stop. I am assuming the "brand new" CVs the PO put in it were lies because it was all I could think of that would cause that kind of grabbing. Check the CVs, they seem fine. We call up a few parts stores and the soonest we can get one is tomorrow noon. Decide to check other poo poo, like the wobbly harmonic balancer, turn the wheels to the right to get at the access port through the frame rail and HOLY poo poo THERE'S THE PROBLEM.

I can run down the highway with my hand off the wheel now. Before it had a mean pull to the right and for the last two days has been slowly getting a worse and worse vibration on that side that we thought was the blown rear shocks until it got so bad it felt like a ticking time bomb of a CV joint.

Getting a new tire put on right now at a local yard, then off to pillage the justy in their lot if it is still here.

Yup... pretty sure some belts are broken. It had some very odd handling characteristics.

Every time we get on the highway I fear we will actually become roadkill, literally. :stonk:

The funniest thing about this car is that in FWD if I am not careful I end up doing a burnout because first gear is ridiculously short. A pegleg peel on P175/70R13s, but still...

Either way, I'm glad you made it through safely. They're usually pretty good about keeping the online inventory accurate so you must've just missed that car. Sucks. I actually swung through the lot right after 5:00 as I got done with work a bit early but I saw no tiny red Scooby. Where'd you get that tire, anyway?

Edit: They have an '87 2WD 4.0L Comanche in their domestic lot.

My wife was a service writer for the local Subaru Dealer for many years. (She's the office manager now) I was just telling her about Kastein's adventure. The first thing she says to me was

It must be a standard.

The left me a bit puzzled, so I asked her how she know this.

Mine grows loving fast but isn't dark, so it looks like less.

List of poo poo to fix so far:
Left headlight housing cracked
Low beams inop
Turn signal switch self destructed in chicago and had to be patched together with a wad of duct tape. I bet replacing it fixes the low beams too.
Install new rear seatbelts
Tuneup
Fix exhaust
Rear shocks
Bleed brakes
Figure out why harmonic balancer is wobbly
Fix horn (probably the same issue as the lights and signals, it works when the wheel is at some positions, slipring is likely dirty or worn)
Dome lights and switches
Temp gauge inop
New tires
New seat, or adjust mounting of stock one
Remove random amp wiring dangling from dash
Desalt
Derust (a few small spots)
Undercoat the gently caress out of it
Pull and clean all interior parts, carpet, clean floors, bedline, reinstall
New windshield

Other than that, shits fuckin' mint :v:
