So, Drill Sergeant duty. I know an NCO came down on orders to go to DS school, but this NCO only has about 7 months left in the Army before ETS and was not planning on reenlisting. How does that even work? From what little I know, you can't turn down DS orders, but why would anyone bother putting someone on DS duty who isn't even going to be in that long?

How long is DS school? Assuming a month of terminal that leaves 6 months to PCS, go to school, then start a tour before getting out of there which is not a whole hell of a lot of time. Sounds like somebody hosed up or is trying to pressure him into reenlisting.

We had an ex-DS in my AIT class- he was busted down to E-1 for loving someone he shouldn't, and was reclassing to medic. DS is basically basic 2.0 according to him, with weird random poo poo like being marched out to a road and being told to yell at telephone poles for 30 minutes straight.

The way the army works they'll send him, he'll get through three weeks, then they'll realize their error and pull him. Halfway through his ETS some colonel will misinterpret his file and court marshal him for abandonment and fraud. It will take him two years and countless hours and thousands of dollars in lost work to clear his name. Five years down the road, just as he's getting ready to accept a contractor job for the government, they'll change his discharge to OTH.

He'll have to sign a declination statement that basically says he declines DS duty but also bars him from re-enlistment. So if he's planning on ETSing, no harm no foul, but if he was like a lot of people I know it sticks 'em between a rock and a hard place, DS/Recruiter duty or dec statement and throwing away retirement and their job.

When I was there, a class started every 3 weeks. It's probably longer now, so you might get stuck in their HHC doing random details (like cleaning up the leader's reaction course after a class goes through it).

Dear Ft. Bliss, thank you for not clearing me from post for well over a year after my ets date on Aug 18 2013. With this job I've been trying to get, I had to figure out why I had a loss of jurisdiction on my clearance and apparently someone failed to check a box until November 18th 2014. Thank you for the giant mess this has made and making everything take far longer than it should.
