The only thing is that I doubt they've be able to find another venue for this year, since I'm sure that the whole industry has already financially prepped and invested into this year's con, not to mention finding a large enough venue on short notice.

I mean, who knows they might be able to shift the whole thing somewhere else before the summer, but I'd be really surprised.

Impossible. They've already done the hotel bookings, which means people have their flights, etc.

Not only have people started booking, but most hotels were full within hours of reservations going up.

The language in the letter made it sound like they wouldn't renew their contract with Indianapolis after the current term is up rather than break the agreement. Although I think 2015 might be the last year of the current term anyways.

And oh, the crying...

They were what I called a trap bloodline in high school because it usually attracted the worst players and their discipline was relatively bad. They also added in "male" Black Furies in Werewolf but they're always metis, who are naturally sterile. I guess some guys really wanted to wield a labrys and get mediocre gifts. Revised as an edition was all about male inclusion.

A running trend in White Wolf books is that the all female groups all have pretty average to terrible special powers. There's no real reason to be arguing to play any of them when the other tribes had much better gifts and weren't walking gender stereotypes*.

*They're almost always ethnic stereotypes. The Black Furies are a twofer because they're the tribe of Greek 90's feminist stereotypes.

This is pretty awesome and hopefully it'll get the governor and some legislators to rethink their decisions. I have a good feeling it won't but one can always hope.

I guess then the big question is whether or not Indiana can levy penalties for breaking that contract.

This may, in some weird shameful way, be the most positive press that the gaming industry has gotten in a while :iamafag:

The Midwesterner in me would hate that, but obviously I would also still attend every year.

Also I just keep thinking about how this, like, I do not at ALL think it is a cynical ploy, but it is SO GENIUS because it is already getting huge publicity, and I sincerely doubt there are more gaming inroads to be made with the "boycott all gays" crowd than the "hey maybe treating human beings as equals is cool" crowd.

The show really needs to stay in the midwest, it's where all the small and medium sized gaming companies are. Every time they've tried to do a show on the west coast it's failed because very few vendors showed up.
Vegas is also a really lovely place to run a convention, unless you're pulling in CES numbers it's not worth the trouble.

It really will be interesting to see what happens. I mean, gaming in the traditional sense seen at Gen Con seems baked into the Midwest, but of course the gaming world has expanded endlessly and now is just as spread out as gamers themselves. It would make me sad to have to go to Denver or Atlanta or something for Gen-Con, but I basically took a blood oath to attend forever, and you know how those blood oaths are.

I appreciate the gesture, but I highly doubt Gen Con is in a position to break their just signed 5 year contract over this.
I suspect the likely outcome will be, the bill gets signed, it's immediately challenged and by 2020 when the current contract is up it will have been overturned by the courts.

I also think this is quite likely, that it will be gone long before 2020. And they signed the lease until 2020 in 2012, when they still had 3 years to go, so negotiations for the next lease could easily have begun after next year's Gen-Con anyway. The showdown is not nearly as far off as it might seem. Except, yes, again, I do not think this bill will even survive a year.

Ha! I'd loving love to see them try to move to the KC metro area (let alone Lee's Summit.) I'd say we have the con space, but everything is so spread out around here it would suck to have try to hold a con that big here. We might have more hotel rooms than Indy has right now, but that's only if you count the entire metro area, parking sucks on the best of days, and public transit in KC is a loving joke.

And that's assuming that weekend doesn't have a concert or a basketball game.

Regardless of Georgia's social politics, GenCon will never be in Atlanta because the DragonCon holding company has been moving to stomp pretty much any other nerdy kind of convention before it can take root and challenge them in the slightest. Like, they literally created a comic convention for a year just to block attempts at a ComiCon South or some other drat thing.

Atlanta itself isn't bad, but man, the state assembly is almost as terrible as Texas or the Carolinas these days.

It was a nice gesture on the part of GenCon, but it looks like the bill is getting signed regardless. Weird because apparently even the NCAA is against it too, but I guess it was kinda a foregone conclusion anyways. But like ya'll said, it'll get challenged and struck down pretty quickly, probably either alongside the gay marriage ruling in June or a little after, so GenCon isn't really in any danger of moving.

There goes my dream of seeing it move anywhere closer to Georgia (not in Georgia though, please do not come to my state).

Though if we're developing fantasy scenarios, why not Lake Geneva, WI (population 8,000). They could buy the building The Dungeon was in and make it a year-round museum/game store.

While that would be neat in some ways (easier for a few of my friends to make it), and while the conference hall there is probably still big enough, one of the main reasons they left in the first place was that the hotel infrastructure wasn't good enough to house the con. And I sadly guarantee you that it hasn't been fixed in the intervening years.

I'd root for Seattle personally, but our convention hall couldn't even handle an early PAX particularly gracefully. There'd be other venues that are less claustrophobic. :ohdear:
