ALP get the best of both worlds. LNP goes through the pain of negotiating this with industry, and when the ALP get back in next year they will pare it back to something more comfortable while leaving the bulk of it in place, in the name of "restoring the balance".

E: To be more specific, they can pare it back minimally and receive zero negative feedback from the LNP for doing so, while receiving kudos from industry and the public.

With the way the bill is worded, I'm cautious to take a recommendation for what VPN to use from a torrent site. The law explicitly states that

quote:

The site must also be a service operating outside Australia whose "primary purpose" is to commit or facilitate copyright infringement. It also must be proven that it is facilitating an infringement in Australia.

The judge must also find that the site is "flagrantly" infringing copyright

and it's not a stretch to imagine that they may ban some specific VPN services if it can be found that the primary purpose of that particular VPN is to facilitate piracy.

I can't remember where I read it but I thought that Brandis already commented on the fact that the legislation will allow judges to block specific VPNs for exactly this reason.

I guess you could setup an openvpn server yourself on AWS or something. It's just going to be a game of whack a mole trying to take vpn services down though.

That's what makes this so good.

Torrenting and downloading ~filez~ is normalised here, evidenced by our nation having one of the highest rates of unlawful downloading in the world. People think it's just an everyday part of life, so when the government wanders in and makes it illegal a whole bunch of average families will prick up and say "w-what? what the gently caress?". This is one of the reasons why laws and culture usually move closely together, because if they don't, it requires more work to make them politically acceptable.

Compare this with, say, marriage equality. The movement 15 years ago was in its infancy and not particularly widespread in the population, so john howard could quite freely make a law mandating marriage between man and woman. Now, the population has moved on and said "yeah okay whatever, let's do this" and eventually we'll have no choice but to change it.

how long will the system practically last when it's going to run up half a billion a year costs and keep either falling over, having security breaches or failing to gather any pertinent data? There's so much data it can't capture there is no way they're going to catch anyone worthwhile.

I'm sure there will be a few trials that are crazily sensationalised to justify it though.

People pay no attention to anything and then bitch and moan like all of this was completely hidden from them. Unfortunately the TV news is too busy reporting on vital stories like house fires and car accidents and their only other source of news which is what celebrities are currently doing doesn't cover actual important poo poo. Also something something reality TV I'm too tired.

Disclosure: I've had a massive headache all day and I'm just whining about this poo poo because you just know it's going to cause an outcry AFTER it all goes through because no one pays attention.
