Holy crap, the new Brandon Flowers single is AMAZING! 80s inspired production and a catchy chorus is a formula that will never not work for me.

I always had a bit of a soft spot for Hot Fuss/Sam's Town, but kinda stopped paying attention to The Killers and him. Holy poo poo this is amazing! Massive chorus. Really sounds like HAIM in parts, not a bad thing!

Yeah, like without a shadow of a doubt Marina Diamandis is a real talented vocalist and there's a handful of interesting ideas on FROOT, but so much of her writing is wholly self-deprecating and melancholic -- which would be fine, but there's zero middle ground or balance with her music. So you've got songs like the title track / Better Than That / Savages that have a strong vibe, but virtually everything else on the album is downcast, overly chorale and just totally cold production wise. Hell, the album leads off with a track literally titled "Happy", but for a song evidently about finding reasons to be happy the writing & production is about as wistful and meandering as it gets.

... Maybe I just don't get this chick's angle though because I kinda always expect her to have Lady-Gaga-like bundles of energy, and yet -- just like the previous Electra Heart album -- you only ever catch the occasional glimmer of it. Which is too bad, because she's comparatively a much stronger vocalist and likely has a bunch more songwriting tricks up her sleeve.

I loves me some downcast melancholic pop, that might be why I loved Froot so much.

Another great album for that kinda sound - Out Of Control by Girls Aloud. There's some upbeat bonkers stuff, but most of them are very Pet Shop Boys-inspired -- I very much recommend Untouchable, Love is Pain, and The Loving Kind.

Oh I love this song as well, but really, Sia can't enunciate properly at all. Due to that and all the multi-tracking, the vocals sound super messy.

Marina and the Diamond's new album is out! Woopwoop. It's pretty good so far.

On first listen to Family Jewels I instantly loved it and still do. On first few listens to Electra Heart it just didn't grab me, it probably wasn't until about 6 months later that it just all clicked and now I find it hard to separate those two albums. FJs probably just edges it out. Froot so far has been like Electra Heart ... nothing has really grabbed me much. Froot, Savages and Blue are kinda cool I guess, but the music just seems so uninspired and bland zero effort backing Marina. But, in 6 months time I may also love it. So far though, just doesn't do anything for me.

Where pop music sounds good:

1. On your headphones
2. On the radio
3. On your boombox
4. On your studio monitors
5. In the car, sitting at a traffic light, mouthing the lyrics
6. In the car, driving along, singing the lyrics
7. In the car, when your current jam starts playing on the radio after waiting for it for what feels like forfuckingever the second you pull into a parking lot so you end up sitting in your car for 3 minutes while singing the gently caress out of all the lyrics
8. Everywhere else

Yeah I think he's insanely talented vocally. I'm not a huge fan of all his stuff, but he has some great catchy songs sprinkled in there. The bass line in Shady is great, and he pulls that off really well.

I love how he belts out, he has great control of his voice. Songs like Whataya Want from Me are my favorite from him, but goddamn can the dude sing.

I'm going to see this band live tonight. Norwegian pop at it's best (except for A-ha but we don't talk about that). I kinda love Eva & The Heartmaker, but I can't pinpoint exactly what it is that I love about her.

And while talking about Norwegian pop music, I must mention Susanne Sundfør. She's become a major artist recently due to her latest album release which is incredibly awesome. Although she isn't cheery as Eva & The Heartmaker. It's a very moody, melancholic and relatively dark pop album but it's incredible and worth a listen nonetheless.

They went overboard on the robotic sound of Britney imo. The beat is cool and I like what they did for the cover, but I really don't like how processed her voice sounds.

What I like about guys like Daft Punk is that they do "robot" but it still sounds warm and purposeful. In this case, it sounds off putting and kind of bizarre.

The robotic thing doesn't really fit the theme of the song, so I'm not a huge fan.

I dunno, I think the robotic vocoder stuff worked. Kind of made her sounds very... disconnected? Isolated? Can't really think of the word. But the whole song is about being separated from everyone else and watching other people interacting so I liked the effect.

Maybe in September we will, when their new album is out. All I can hope is that it's just as good as the last one they released, and that they decide that they should keep going after all.

Also, Donkeyboy has to have a new album coming out sometime soon, right? They've released a few new singles over the last year but no album news as far as I can tell.
