I was impatient and pulled the trigger on a Chromecast. I have a Roku, as well so it seemed like the Firestick overlapped with that too much. Didn't really matter because I just listened to Spotify all night, which my receiver supports natively.

I got my Stick for dirt cheap during that promo period so I don't feel bad about not using it. I got the Jackbox for it though so I just think of it as another board game that happens to plug into a TV.

Man, I'm about to give up on Plex for the Stick. It's such a stuttery piece of poo poo. I can't get through one movie or TV episode without it freezing up and having to go back to the Plex menu. And what really kills me is it works perfectly on every other platform except the Stick. Back to Kodi it is!

I got the Stick a few days ago and have been using Plex until I get around to putting Kodi on it. I've watched two 1 hour TV shows and just tested out a movie for about 5 min and haven't had any problems. Everything is 1080. Could have just been lucky so far since I've only used it for a whole 2 hours. Also ordered 2 fire TV boxes but they wont be in stock for about a week according to amazon.

I'm having issues with my Fire TV being really slow connection speed wise. Everything buffers every 3s for about 15s. My Chromecasts work fine on the same TV connected to the same network.

The last two updates have consisted only of bug fixes. Well, the drought of new Fire TV features is about to come to an end. My sources at Amazon tell me the next Fire TV software update, dubbed the “connectivity” update, should begin rolling out to select devices tomorrow, March 24. As always, the update will first begin arriving on a small subset of devices before ramping up and making its way to all Fire TVs.

I've been going round and round over the best setup to host and stream files to Kodi on the FireTV. Currently I've got an external drive connected through a Time Capsule that is then connected to our FIOS router. Which is all much more convoluted than it needs to be. I've been waffling over transitioning everything over to a basic NAS or something a bit more robust and dedicated, but if I can just connect the external directly to the FireTV, I would be stoked.

USB drive support is the only feature missing that I care about, it will let me throw all of my roms onto a thumb drive or something. I've really wanted a cheap all in one unit for Netflix/Kodi/emulators for awhile now.

If it could work with a USB hub so I could keep my wireless keyboard and a big fat USB drive at the same time, that would be tits for stuff like emulation.

Yeah if they put in native USB drive support I don't see any reason for me to keep root.

Currently, I have Plex running on my iMac with a 5TB USB External plugged into it having CouchPotato and Sickbeard drop everything onto it. I have two FireTVs and a Roku stick (aside from tablets/phones which are used irregularly) to play Netflix/Plex on the various TVs. I think my only gap would be getting the USB content hooked up to one of the FireTVs to the Roku. Should I expect any performance issues with running 1080p movies hosted on one of the FireTVs to another FireTV as long are both hardwired?

Anyone else have problems with Netflix on the stick? Every 20 seconds or so, the video will hang and then play really fast until it's caught up with the audio, which never slows or stops.

Time to blow up hotel wifi with Netflix streaming. No more tethering to my phone! Yes it was possible with a sideloaded browser, bluetooth KB/mouse/etc. But a hassle. Just sign right in and burn bandwidth. The Firestick just got a lot more logical for travel!

Do you bring a laptop with you to these hotels? I'm not trying to be a smartass at all, but I'm wondering why you couldn't just bring along an HDMI cable and plug your laptop into the hotel tv and not have to screw with anything else. I could see if you want to watch something while working on your laptop but I was curious if you had other reasons. I know there's a ton of stuff that only works or works best on a streaming device vs a straight up laptop with a browser but I can't think of many that would impact hotel life. However I can see how super easy it would be to throw a Roku/Fire/etc stick in a bag (or even a full blown Roku 3 since it's so small) and leave it there until you needed it without ever having to mess with the laptop/tablet/phone/other option. Random question too since I only use a Roku and an HTPC. Is there anything any streaming device can do to change regions in Netflix? (i.e. using a browser plugin in Chrome/Firefox to make it look like I'm in the UK and can watch stuff not licensed in American yet) Tyson Tomko fucked around with this message at 19:14 on Mar 26, 2015 |

I think the biggest issue is going to be how slow the hotel wifi is. The past few I've been to have been awful. I always end up tethering to my phone (not letting go of my ATT unlimited data).

Also if BYOStreamingStick at hotels becomes a frequent thing then they will probably start throttling that traffic to keep things usable. edit: Or start charging for "premiumum wifi".

Anyone try the bluetooth headphones feature? That sounds sweet. The previous workaround was a hack that required XBMC to sync the audio. I am hoping there is no sync issue with any media playback, specifically Plex.

My box is updating now but it looks like Kodi is fully compatible with it. aftv posted:The big question everyone always seems to have when a new Fire TV update rolls around is if it negatively affects Kodi in any way. You’ll be happy to hear that several people who were lucky enough to be among the first to receive the new update have chimed in to let us know that Kodi is still fully functional. You can still sideload and launch Kodi just like before. Even better is that Kodi can fully access and play media files stored on an attached USB drive (as reported by Peter, Hitcher, and Cabe). Additionally, it appears that you can move Kodi itself onto an attached USB drive, but Kodi’s data, where the large thumbnail directory is stored, does not get moved to the USB drive. Keeping the thumbnails on the Fire TV’s internal storage is ideal for smooth scrolling through your Kodi library, however it’s likely possible to move the thumbnails to USB storage as well by editing Kodi’s advanced settings. I’ll look into this further and create a guide if it is in fact possible. ---------- Stugazi posted:Anyone try the bluetooth headphones feature? That sounds sweet.
