Yeah, I've been keeping up with it and it's been alright. I don't know how much involvement Chris Carter had besides putting his name on it, but it's not entirely awful as an official fan-fiction continuation from the show. I actually wonder if they'll use any of the material from the comics, since those already went out of the way to re-establish Mulder and Scully at the FBI and another alien conspiracy.

I think I read somewhere that the Lone Gunmen are still alive and kicking, according to the comics. Is this true? If so, and the comics are considered canon, then they have to bring those goofy bastards back. If they can bring CSM back, who got blown to goddamn bits, then surely they can bring back TLG. I'm okay with ridiculous retcons if it means making the most entertaining product possible. They can always use the standard comic book explanation and say it's a different "universe" or something.

Perhaps he was a super-supersoldier all along, impervious to magnetite, and that's how he was able to survive getting blasted with rockets.

The FBI faked the Lone Gunmen's deaths and put them in witness protection. CSM, and all the other co-conspirators are now alien hybrid clones that have been brought back to life to continue the conspiracy. Also they brought Krycek back - he keeps showing up alive because he's stuck in a time loop after merging with the alien while trapped in the missile silo that one time.

That would be perfectly in keeping with the mythology, and I would love that explanation.

Yep. Confirmed. How crazy is this. And apparently they're trying hard to get Spotnitz back.

Other news:There will be both mythology and monster of the week episodes. Mark Snow will be scoring. They will shoot in Vancouver. Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish might be back if there's room in their schedules.

This feels like a dream. If they can get Vince Gilligan, too, then I'll know this is too good to be true.

Cautious optimism nearing dangerously high levels!

Easily accessible internet porn is the reason Mulder hasn't made any progress on uncovering the conspiracy in the last decade or so.

Speaking of black oil - my main question re. the mythology is this: In one episode Mulder gets infected with black oil while being held prisoner in Russia, but as far as I can tell it's never really brought up again or resolved in any way. Am I missing something? It should have been a huge deal.

That is because that is the second time the black oil stuff appears in the series and as such they had not really decided what to do with it. The first time we see the black oil alien (piper maru), the black oil itself is entirely inconsequential. They do a bunch of tests and find out that the black oil is simply engine oil, and was just a vessel for the formless alien force. Then comes tunguska/terma, where the black oil is some form of alien bacteria, and is treated as a straight up crawling infection (doctor who gets infected goes into a coma). Then it comes back again in the movie, where it infects people, but this time turns them into hosts that will create one of the grey aliens. Then, by season 8, the black oil is back to mind controlling people.

Zartosht posted:

Which would mean that the entire plot in season 8 where they were trying to get the vaccine from Krycek to save the resurrected Mulder was pointless. The key to enjoying the mytharc is to ignore the details (and ignore the super soldiers entirely).

Evolution/alien tampering! The first Black Oil was like the Facehuggers of Aliens: Only upon infecting humans, or something human-like, do they turn into Greys. The Greys that sprung forth modified it into a mind-controlling variant that they intended to use in Colonization, and they had another version that they ran their ships on. Simple.

So, these may be blasphemy in this thread, but I'm looking to watch the X-files with my girlfriend, and wondering if there is an episode lists the main story arch episodes, as I know a lot of season 1 at least is "filler" by comparison what the main story ends up being and the main character relations.

The main story doesn't really take shape until the second half of season 2. Until then there are just kind of alien-focused episodes every so often.

Counterpoint - Deepthroat. Also even if S1 doesn't establish specific mythos "facts", it's still pretty crucial in setting up the themes and stakes, probably more so than any other season. If you skipped to the second half of S2 you would even miss the Duanne Barry two-parter.

That episode was the low point of season 1 for me, the only one that I could say I actively disliked.

edit: Oops, missed the mention above. Still, a very bad episode. Though the fire one has Mudler's ex talking about them banging on top of Arthur Conan Doyle's grave, which is ... just terrible.
