I'd love to know at what point in the original Bambino! series that you almost went "gently caress it, this is hot garbage" but stuck it out for the sake of completion.

I'm pretty sure its the Ban in New York Arc. That was....weird.

Bambino was still good all the way through, in my opinion. It got weird with the NY arc being an eyerolling pastiche of mafia movies, and the Hayama thing came outta nowhere, but it wasn't anywhere as bad as Secondo got like pretty much right out the gate. I blame that dude with no sense of taste, I forget his name. He's one of those antagonists who you hate not because he's a hateable character but because he actively makes the work worse and less entertaining by existing. I didn't want to see him get his comeuppance or whatever, I just wanted him out of the manga and wished he'd never been a character in it.

And then later on the mangaka lets his right wing opinions and xenophobia really color the series and I never bothered to finish reading it.

It started out hilarious because hell yeah New Yorkers are gonna walk all over you and fleece you for everything you've got if you're a googly eyed tourist like Ban was, and even the bit with the mafia don going all "I recognized you because of your spaghetti" was endearingly corny, but the actual mafia cooking battle itself was pretty bad to me. Especially at the end where all of these mobsters are talking about honor and poo poo, and the two opposing dons are the only people in the entire room who're actually thinking and talking like criminals. Even those underhanded brothers, who're probably gonna quietly disappear and be found in a dozen different dumpsters a few months later, are all like "We lost fair and square your cooking was stronger, we respect you." That was really dumb.

The highlight of that arc to me will always be Ban singing to that disabled singer-songwriter, though. I cringed in fierce secondhand embarrassment just translating that scene.

I'm not sure if you have read Hajime no Ippo (spoilers ahead), but his terrible right wing opinions led to the best arc in the series (post-war flashback). Even bad opinions can make a good story, it's how you go about it :P

It fits with the whole "progress" theme the manga has had for its whole run. He prided himself on his huge power, and then he gets shot out of the sky by a new weapon and shanked by a random passer-by.

Haw, I was afraid Blue Seal King might be an obnoxiously recurring villain, but nope, shot out of the sky and then stabbed to death in the span of two chapters, woo! A shame his slayer is about to charge to his inglorious death

Really curious what their plan for dealing with ten thousand soldiers equipped with the equivalent of bringing a tank to a knife fight will be, should be good, but I have a feeling Tiger's not long for this world

I imagine that they probably do tell them not to go after men/women who have been previously married, but probably just because there's a lower chance of them falling in love with the vector rather than no chance at all (so it's better to just go after people who don't fit that profile).

No clue, alas. The to-buy links here are both for Japanese releases. More info is coming according to the scanlating group that's already laid claim to it but for now who knows. Possibly with Sidonia being a success there's a better chance at it coming over the pond.

Shamo has another translated volume up.

But tends to be massively loving annoying because the two brothers in this arc are about the dumbest and most irritating characters in the series yet. Seriously I am only looking forward to them dying in some ultraviolence to make up for this crap. All the parts not involving them in the volume are pretty cool though.

Yeah that's the main reason I want it over here, I got into BLAME! after Tokyopop died so other than finding NOiSE at a used book store and a few of the later volumes (which I didn't wanna buy without owning earlier ones) in similar, I haven't been able to get any Nihei dead-trees.
