Actually Garth George as far as I'm aware is still very much alive. He was still a contributing columnist to the Bay of Plenty Times and Rotorua Daily Post until this month.

These are the last columns by him that I can find, both pulished on the 18th of February this year. No idea why they have different headlines seeing as how they're basically the same column.
