supervise interns, conferences, education. you also want to just establish with them that it's important to you, and have them agree in the abstract to support it. a tiny company that grows has lots of natural advancement opportunity, generally. tiny company that doesn't grow won't at all in terms of promotion, but can in terms of broadening experience.

but if advancement and development are important, then don't take jobs that don't offer them. seller's market in tech these days, use your leverage.

legal considerations aside, i like to pay interns, so we can solicit interest from students outside the narrow population that can afford to work for free in a high-CoL area for 3 months at a time. paying interns means getting applicants who aren't rich dicks

this is exactly why a lot of firms prefer not to pay interns. unpaid internships only get applicants from a certain social class. it's not about the money. it never was

Has anyone who is not Microsoft's making poo poo up department actually seen or used one? Because I find it incredibly hard to believe that it does object recognition and AR as well as they seem to claim it does.

its easy to make half functional development prototypes held together with kapton tape and rapid prototyped parts look really good in a canned demo in your lab

well, easier than making a working product anyways
