Could my former Army, GWB lovin' cousin be turning a corner here? The fact that he leads with "Ted Cruz lost me" seems to point to "no" but there's always hope! My friend trying to bait me into a conversation he doesn't want to have or won't argue in good faith. Different cousin chimes in with "the truth is in the middle" crap. I don't want to waste my time, and it's irritating. I think in little ways I might be getting through to him. Any time that I have posted the Atwater quote, the response I get is "that (along with the southern strategy) is liberal propaganda." I have even posted map links showcasing how the South flipped voting in Presidential elections in the late 1960s and it was still denied.

http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-5-stupidest-habits-you-develop-growing-up-poor/ This article was reposted by Cracked today and the comments are filled with your typical bootstraps "I'm poor and eat healthy, stop being lazy!" shenanigans, mostly be middle class white women whose Facebook pages are filled with nice vacation pictures. quote:take your rear end to the local grocery nook, grab a piece of lean chicken, an apple or two, some brown rice and in about 5 minutes, bam!! A healthy meal to eat.....and surprise!! No chef required! So hard!! quote:i could make a drat good salad for the same price as say a bag of chips and a thing of oreos. including meat, cheese, veggies. Wrap your lettuce in paper towels once you get it....lasts weeks instead of a week. She later goes on to say that her "drat good salad" is composed of ranch dressing, lettuce, red pepper, store-brand ham, and a $1.50 bag of shredded cheese. quote:Wrong..im broke as fk. Im fat cuz i choose to buy those things. Veggies/fruits are on sale constantly..some you can freeze. a thing of oreos is way more expensive then what i could do with some frozen chicken bought at good prices and veggies. Its called being inventive. And its still lazy, they dont want to MAKE something..they would rather microwave it. This is the same lady. quote:This article is so untrue. I was on foodstamps, for a short while, as an adult. I ate better than I ever have buying groceries on my own. The photo I posted is extremely accurate. Nevermind that the picture proves the article's first point since that fridge is filled with non-perishable garbage, but you can also say that middle class people can afford to eat out every night. quote:1 giant bag of kale for $1. 1 bag of carrots for $1. 1 bag of broccoli $1. Head of lettuce $1. 1 avocado $1. Two weeks worth of applea for $5. gently caress off with that "expensive" bullshit. Where is this magical place where kale is a dollar a bag? quote:I go to the grocery store once a week and it keeps just fine for that long. Is that all that's holding you back? It sure sounds like you don't want to eat healthy... "I can go to the grocery store once a week and make $5 worth of vegetables last me the entire time why can't you feed your family? And don't give me excuses like "I have to work two jobs" or 'I don't have a car or the money for gas to make weekly trips to the grocery store'." quote:Vegetables, and fruits people...dont have to be rich to eat healthy...people on welfare just want a FAST fix...open a bag, or put it in a microwave...and then cost taxpayers millions every year at a doctors office, !!! Oooh, vegetables and fruits! Of course, why didn't the poor think of that!? quote:That's bs I will believe people in the ghetto can't afford to eat healthier the moment I don't see them in line at footlocker every other week dropping $200 on a pair of Jays.... quote:I dont disagree with that statement..........................however you can prepare healthy food for an entire family for very short money. I'm not talking organic either. the reason there so fat is because they are loving LAZY......so stop making excuses. And so on.

Forget spygate, PSI-gate is the biggest Obama tragedy of them all. edit: to be fair, how Obama used it was incorrect (he said it would decrease oil consumption 3-4%) but yeah inflated tires will improve MPG.

Where is that one quote about letting the poor have a single avenue of pleasure they can afford: rich foods? Yeah, taking an average serving for all of that together it doesn't even break 300 kcal a day. It does pretty much nothing to actually sustain you, which is doubly lovely if you're working long hours or several jobs and desperately need that energy. You'll definitely need something else to actually keep you going, meaning it's almost entirely supplementary in nature. Essentially you'd be spending 10$ a week on what is essentially as much of a "luxury" food as chocolate. Hell, chocolate is quite energy dense and has some actual flavour, so if you had to choose between one or the other it could arguably be the better choice.

Where is that one quote about letting the poor have a single avenue of pleasure they can afford: rich foods? Would it not be better if they spent more money on wholesome things like oranges and wholemeal bread or if they even, like the writer of the letter to the New Statesman, saved on fuel and ate their carrots raw? Yes, it would, but the point is that no ordinary human being is ever going to do such a thing. The ordinary human being would sooner starve than live on brown bread and raw carrots. And the peculiar evil is this, that the less money you have, the less inclined you feel to spend it on wholesome food. A millionaire may enjoy breakfasting off orange juice and Ryvita biscuits; an unemployed man doesn't. Here the tendency of which I spoke at the end of the last chapter comes into play. When you are unemployed, which is to say when you are underfed, harassed, bored, and miserable, you don't want to eat dull wholesome food. You want something a little bit 'tasty'. There is always some cheaply pleasant thing to tempt you.

I've heard that "Death to" also occupies a similar space to "gently caress" in Iran. For example, if you are stuck in traffic on your monday morning commute in Tehran, you wouldn't say, "gently caress traffic!", you'd say, "Death to traffic!" It isn't actually saying that you want to kill something, in much the same way that I don't want to copulate with something.

Yeah, home gardening really isn't going to make anyone rich, or save a hell of a lot of money. Especially for a poor family where asking for $10-$20 to set up a very small operation is quite a bit, it can take weeks or months for you to see a return on investment, if you ever see one at all. That being said, it can be worth it to grow certain things, like herbs. Rosemary grows quickly, is easy to take care of, and adds a lot of flavor to food, and is perfect for a home garden. Several other herbs are similar and can make a cheap home-cooked meal (dark meat chicken comes to mind) much more palatable.

One of the low incoming housing communities in the city where I used to live has crazy HOA type rules that include a limit to the exact amount of plants you can have on your porch. Also, if you so much pop the hood of your car and look like you might be thinking of fixing something they'll yell at you and threaten you with a violation. You could have a dead battery and they'd tell you to get a tow off the property if they caught you trying to put a new one in. How can they be poor if they have a car in the first place?
