It's annoying - and to this day I'd still like to know what happened - but after listening to the man for over a decade, I can't imagine him behaving any other way.

On a happier topic, my box set came today and it is fantastic. If anyone is still on the fence about buying one, it is totally worth the money.

Just wanted to quote this post because if you look at the trailer for the documentary that's linked in the article you can catch a glimpse of former best show power caller Petey during his birthday celebration a number of years back. Did not expect him to look like he does for some reason, call in radio does that to you.

Last night's Steven Universe was completely Tom-centric and also featured the voice acting talents of one Mr. Jon Wurster in a big supporting role. So it's pretty much a must watch.

Uh, yeah, speaking of that. I made a bit of a modification to my Best Show poster I got as a marathon premium a few years back.

Okay, so because I am old and crochety, it took me literally years to think 'oh hey podcasts are pretty okay' and being a giant mountain goats fan I have no idea why I wasn't listening to this sooner, but...with such massive archives, most of it probably not available online (assumption) where does one even start listening? Just hit the latest one and go from there?

If you just start with the relaunch as a podcast, that's probably as good a place as any, it's pretty accessible for new listeners. Then once you've worked through the backlog of the last ~5 months, you can have people in this thread link you to some gems or whatever.

You are wrong about most of the archives not being available online!

That said, just start with the relaunch back in December for now. After that, I'd say grab the box set for Scharpling and Wurster's greatest hits, or check out the old Best Show Gems feed: https://wfmu.org/playlists/BD

Now is the time for us to gather together and celebrate those things that we like and think are fun.
There are a couple of the older CDs on spotify etc as well. Just search for Scharpling & Wurster.

I do realize more and more that I like the call-in stuff just as much as the preplanned bits. Of course when the callers are boring, the show becomes drat near unlistenable. When they are bad, Tom usually makes it fun.

I love wurster bits but my main draw to the show has always been the rants more than anything and the callers second. I realize I'm in the minority there though.

I'm in the same boat. As much as I love the wurster stuff, the stuff that makes me laugh harder than anything is Scharpling ranting

Alright, I've listened to the first show of the relaunch, and it was good, but right near the end, there's a bit where Tom just sings King Crimson riffs at a caller for like three minutes straight. I laughed until I choked. I'm on board.

Because now I'm remembering that moment and desperately want to hear it again, but really can't be bothered to listen to the whole thing trying to find it.

It's definitely in like the last half-hour to forty minutes of the thing, just before or just after he indicated he was going to run long and clear the phone lines because the show took so long to get going.

The early years have a lot of Tom singing. I tried to go through the whole show chronologically at work during the hiatus and at some point in 2003 he just starts singing Aimee Mann's Wise Up every week whenever he hits a string of bad callers.

Also I'm not the biggest fan of the sound collage but that Jim Morrison chunk at the end of this week's was fantastic.
