Yes, this is a problem, but it doesn't need to be my problem. It's like every other thing they blame on the incumbents from missed service visits, to botched installs, to major network fixes that take literal weeks to resolve, if they have so little control over their own business then why am I using them?

They used to offer a service that basically worked, and was cheaper and better than you could get elsewhere. That isn't the case anymore.

To be fair, TPIA have -TRIED- to get the CRTC to allow them to roll their own truck rolls, do installs, etc, but the incumbents cried that they would break their network with their uneducated filthy installers, and like always, the CRTC accepted the money believed the incumbents.

And while not true across the board for different regions/connection types, my 25/10 unlimited DSL is a hell of a lot cheaper than Bell's own offering ($57.99 for unlimited vs $65.99 for 100GB plus another $30 to make it unlimited). I've had 2 outages that totaled maybe a collective 5 hours, both were catastrophic events outside TSI control (one a car literally driving in to a SLAM and took out FTTN for Bell and TPIA alike, the other Bell literally took down all their interconnects to Teksavvy for no reason), and never dipped below 25/10, in fact most of the time I'm above.

Any other Canadian ISP's doing popups on copyrighted material yet? Eastlink is currently delivering popups on content links and sending out warning letters to people actively downloading material.

Teksavvy is mailing or emailing notices, but goes to pains saying they won't give any customer info at all without a court order, so the chances of anything ever happening are pretty drat insignificant even if you get a notice unless you are chronic, and even then I'm not sure they'd get a court order.

Regarding Teksavvy customer service, last night I was running into issues bridging my modem to a router so I called them to ensure I had it done right, and not only did the guy talk me through bridging from start to finish, the glorious bastard, without my asking, asked my make/model of router, downloaded the manual, and proceeded to talk me through configuring the 3rd party router.

I have no doubt that Telus would have told me to suck a bag of dicks if I was trying to do anything out of the ordinary.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion of Teksavvy, but to be fair I think your opinion is in the minority.

They offer packages/services out west that Telus doesn't even offer at any price, but they do it at a fair price and have customer service typically superior to the incumbents.

If Telus pulled their heads out their asses would I leave? Maybe, but I can't stand their practices for both Internet and mobility services.

Hurf durf, the incumbents also have poor service, therefore Teksavvy's worsening service and value proposition don't matter and they can never be criticized.

Let me put it this way, I still use Teksavvy personally. I used to recommend Teksavvy to friends, family, and clients. Now I use another independent ISP (one with an excellent track record of support despite reliance on the same incumbent's networks) for business and clients, and I tell friends and family to go with whoever is cheapest.

While I know what to expect service wise with the incumbents, at least they have a significantly stronger offering for the money at this point. I'm not about to switch my service right now, but in a year if they've kept the plans there's really no reason not to save the money and get faster speeds, because as I said Teksavvy certainly isn't competing on the service and support front any more.

Edit: Seriously guys, you don't have to line up to white knight Teksavvy.

Sorry but internet service isn't like buying groceries. You're a psycho if you're going to switch services as often as price points out-do each other. Nobody is white knighting them, you just sound a little bit hyperbolic about your horrible cs experience - which is still leagues better than I ever get with Rogers at work.

If you read the post you'll note I wasn't saying that at all, I said in another year. One, because it's worth seeing how quickly the incumbents try to change their offerings, two, because I've had to buy (an immediately obsolete and unsupported) modem to get my current service though Teksavvy, the break-even point on the hardware is two years of service.

If after another year the service is in the same state and Rogers is offering 250/15 unlimited for less than I'm paying for 150/15 @ 400gb then why wouldn't I switch?

My bigger issue is that I can't call up with an issue, lay out what problem I'm having and what I've done to resolve it so far and reasonably expect the person I'm talking to to have it resolved inside a day. I used to do that. Now I may as well be dealing with Bell or Rogers because I'm going to be piped through two or three different reps, be on hold for 20+ minutes, and at the end of it they might have a fix by next business day.

That's fine and I certainly accept that, but if you read the responses the consensus option appears to actually be that no their support isn't great but it's not their fault and if you need to you can try and avoid using it. Then somewhere in there the word entitlement came up.

I'm still using them, but I hope they manage to find a way to take ownership of the support process, or can at least negotiate better rates for the newer service tiers because it's difficult for me to justify paying them more for less.

Got an anecdote from my local startup scene:

quote:

After much internal debate we've gone with a company called iTel Networks. We'll have a 200/200 line installed in 10-12 weeks for $1500/mo on a 3 year contract with no bandwidth caps. Shaw placed 2nd overall but was offering 100/100 for ~ the same price but didn't have as strong customer support and wanted a 5 year contract. Apparently a lot of the big hotels in town use iTel as they give you Shaw wholesale rates but then value add with their own NOC and better SMB support. I chatted with the IT manager for the Hotel Grand Pacific who is on 300/300 and he gave them an awesome review. I'll update more on this once we have it installed.

Anyone have experience with iTel?

Michael Geist's take on it was that since Teksavvy has to eat so much of their own costs of standing up to Voltage in the name of subscriber privacy, that it will probably strongly disincentivize anyone else from stepping up to bat in the future.

Not that Voltage is left in such a great position either, where they have to go through with a probably unprofitable mass lawsuit or else be recognized as copyright trolls and possibly punished for same.

It sounds like they will. It's some result of the way the judge divvied up the costs and expenses when they shouldn't have.

Mantle
May 15, 2004

I saw an excerpt of the decision that the judge's reasoning was Teksavvy tried to characterize some of its expenses such as building a customer portal, customer communications, as an expense related to the troll. However, the judge found that those expenses were more reasonably construed as Teksavvy's marketing and operational costs and therefore not reimbursable by the opposing party.

So out of the blue I got a "copyright infringement notice" from Teksavvy which is peculiar as I haven't even had a torrent program installed on my PC for a year.

It's some outfit named "CEG TEK" which after checking into seems like they're just a US based copyright troll who has been flooding ISPs with thousands of infringement notices a day. I have no idea how they're just pulling IP addresses out of the air and sending them en masse to ISPs or what.

http://www.michaelgeist.ca/2015/03/misuse-canadas-copyright-notice-system-continues-u-s-firm-sending-thousands-notices-settlement-demands/

Teksavvy seems to be doing what they're asked to under the copyright law which is if they receive a complaint to simply forward it. The Teksavvy letter makes is painfully clear that they won't give anybody info on their users without anything short of a court order.

Business model seems pretty good though, in the notice they helpfully include a link where you can "settle" for a modest $100-200 or so, so out of the thousands of notices they send if even a small fraction does it probably pays off. Ironically according the the thread in DSL Reports once you do that, they actually do have your personal info so there are some reports they'll start trying to extort more out of you.

Oh well, I'm just going to ignore this thing all together and I suspect I won't hear another peep on it unless they do try to start a genuine court case over that.

That's basically the right advice, though I'd go a bit further and say don't log onto their website with the unique logon in the warning letter they give you, and certainly don't do so from the computer/IP they allege the infringement took place. Just to be safe.

Also of note: if it's not an actual filed lawsuit (or judgment), it's not a binding settlement on its face, which is why further extortion has been reported to be happening.

Yeah absolutely. I am debating about even contacting teksavvy and asking "wtf" but I suspect they are completely in the clear and just forwarding the notice to whatever ip the claimant says to and they have no choice in the matter, legit or not.

I was just going to delete the email but I will keep it just in case.

Looks like they are porn files from what they say the name of the file is.

Same guys? Porno files or what? Seem like if they actually wanted to go to court with this there would be many thousands of defendants. Can they even sue someone over an ip #? Would that even hold up? I mean they obviously have problems because I haven't downloaded what they are claiming.
