I went over to my parents place today for the traditional barbeque and taunting of the angry fearful pomeranian, and as usual I got into politics chat with my father in the car. He claimed that he read "in a paper" that the Greens were handing out fake How to Vote cards in the NSW election masquerading as the Liberal party. My request for more information has been met, repeatedly, with "use Google".

Now, while I have found plenty of examples of the opposite being done, especially in my own electorate by the LNP during the 2010 election, and some stuff by Labor in the Queensland election, I have found nothing to substantiate this claim. Is my father talking out his arse, or did something actually happen?

We had similar fliers in the last federal election in the seat of Melbourne, and I felt then, and still feel now, that they're deliberately deceptive. It caused a huge furore, they were being advertised as "Information for liberal voters", with a tiny "Authorized by the greens" down the bottom.

It's lovely politics, and causes more ill-will than it wins in votes. That one from NSW seems much more acceptable, the Greens logo is quite prominent, but even the colour will be used as an excuse to argue that it's deliberately misleading.

Apparently it's the first time Shorten has been preferred prime minister in all states.

Outside of QLD Abbott's not doing so well.

http://www.theguardian.com/australi...als?CMP=soc_567

quote:

The Abbott government’s primary vote in Western Australia has slumped to 38% in opinion polling, the lowest in the Liberal stronghold state since 2001.

WA had the highest Coalition primary vote at the federal election in 2013. That has fallen more than 13 percentage points to stand at 38% in the March quarter.

Queensland now has the highest Coalition primary vote at 42%, compared with the national average of 38%, analysis of Newspoll results in the March quarter by the Australian newspaper shows.

The analysis revealed that the opposition leader, Bill Shorten, has for the first time been rated as the preferred prime minister across all states. Shorten enjoys a 10-point lead over Tony Abbott, who stands at 34%. But more than one in five Australians still remain uncommitted between the two leaders.

Nationwide, just 27% of respondents are satisfied with Abbott’s performance as prime minister, compared with 65% who are dissatisfied.

South Australians were the most disillusioned with Abbott’s performance, with only 19% saying they were satisfied with the prime minister. Abbott’s approval rating has tumbled 17 points since the last quarter in WA, now standing at 25%.

Those figures coincided with the spill motion brought against Abbott in February, which was initiated by two WA MPs.

Shorten is 10 percentage points ahead of Abbott in his satisfaction rating, at a nationwide average of 37%, but 45% are dissatisfied with his performance. A further 18% remain uncommitted on Shorten’s performance.

Labor leads 55% to 45% in two-party preferred terms. . Victoria is Labor’s best state, with nearly three out of five choosing Labor in the two-party preferred rating. Queensland has the lowest Labor two-party-preferred vote, with an even 50-50 split between the two main parties.

The analysis was of 4,667 phone interviews conducted over February and March, and has a 4% margin of error.

SENIOR Labor members have urged Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to call a snap election.

The “crash through or crash” proposal came from a group of party elders who believe the Palaszczuk Government is “a heartbeat” away from defeat in State Parliament in the wake of the Billy Gordon controversy.

Voting will be so tight when Parliament resumes on May 5 that Labor members have been warned not to travel above the sixth floor of the Parliamentary Annexe in case they get stuck in the lifts and miss a vote.

“Common sense tells you another election will have to be considered,’’ a high-ranking Labor official said.

“It’s not rocket science. (State secretary) Evan Moorhead would be considering it right now.’’

However Ms Palaszczuk, who is bedridden with the flu, ruled out a snap poll yesterday.

“People tend to explore all kinds of options but it is not a live one,’’ she said through a spokesman.

“The intention is to govern for three years. And as far as we know Billy Gordon is still making up his mind (on how he will vote).”

Mr Gordon was Labor’s 44th vote in the 89-seat Parliament. His vote guaranteed Labor a clear majority with the assured support of the Speaker Peter Wellington.

However if Labor now refuses to accept Mr Gordon’s vote – and if he votes with the Opposition – the Palaszczuk Government could no longer guarantee the passage of legislation through the House.

The Opposition has 42 seats and cannot reach a clear majority even with the Katter Australia Party’s two votes.

Griffith University political expert Paul Williams said under Westminster conventions, Ms Palaszczuk was free to call an election.

Some Labor members said they found it irksome that the party had been forced to seek support from the two ultra-right KAP MPs.

“You can’t govern with the Katters for any length of time,’’ one said. “Their agenda is the antithesis of what we stand for.”

The Greens, too, were infuriated by the KAP demands for uranium mining. Treasurer Curtis Pitt was reportedly negotiating with Mr Katter and KAP colleague Shane Knuth in the belief that Mr Gordon may “pull the pin” and quit.

Ms Palaszczuk has urged him to stand down so a by-election could be held.

Some members urged Ms Palaszczuk to call a general election and be done with it.

“The uncertainty is not good for the state, it’s not good for confidence and it’s not good for investment,’’ according to one.

They believe Ms Palaszczuk’s strong personal approval means the party could pick up seats.

Premier will not kill Bill’s ballot

LABOR will not change rules preventing parties from rejecting controversial MP Billy Gordon’s vote, which means he could keep them in power.

Last week the Clerk of Parliament confirmed political parties would not be able to reject the MP’s vote because they would not know which way he went until after the final count.

It prompted discussion about reverting back to the old voting system, in which members walked to opposing sides of the chamber.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt last week said it was “a conversation” parliament needed to have.

But Leader of the House Stirling Hinchliffe yesterday said the voting rules would not be changing.

Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg said Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk had previously declared she would “put her premiership on the line” when she called for the Member for Cook to resign, but appeared to be changing her tune.

“In order to cling to power, the Premier is now flagging she will accept Mr Gordon’s vote if it means she can remain Premier,” he said.

Last week the Clerk of Parliament advised that crossbench MPs’ votes were recorded after the votes of the Government and Opposition under changes introduced last year.

“In other words, it is not up to the discretion of a party leader as to whether they are going to use Mr Gordon’s vote – Mr Gordon has a right to vote,” the advice states.

The advice states party leaders would not know Mr Gordon’s vote until the conclusion of division.

MINING billionaire Gina Rinehart has criticised welfare recipients for dragging the country into debt and attacked the political left for spending the “bottomless pit” of revenue generated from mining taxes and royalties.

¡°We are living beyond our means,¡± Ms Rinehart, worth an estimated $19.89 billion, wrote in an opinion article. ¡°This ¡®Age of Entitlement¡¯ and its consequences is creating problems for all of us, our children and our grandchildren.¡±

In her latest column for Australian Resources and Investment magazine, Ms Rinehart echoed Treasurer Joe Hockey¡¯s call for an end to the age of entitlement ¡ª albeit with a sharper attack on the $130 billion spent annually on the five million citizens receiving income support.

¡°Australians have to work hard or actually harder and smarter to create the revenue to be able to pay that bill ¡ something has to give, we can¡¯t do it all.¡±

She heaped praise on the late Margaret Thatcher and quoted one of her favourite lines from the controversial former British prime minister: ¡°The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people¡¯s money.¡±

¡°Great quote. Let¡¯s learn from it,¡± she wrote.

The billionaire predicted an outpouring of personal attacks on her for the comments.

¡°I can already hear the left boiling with rage that I dare challenge their ¡®bottomless pit¡¯ and the belief that money doesn¡¯t have to be earned before it is spent mentality.

¡°More nasty twisted articles will appear, forests and splinters of them. But every day Australia goes further into debt with no clear planning operation to get back even close to where we were.

¡°The political left is torn and confused. One moment they hate our very existence and even want us closed down ¡ª but in another, they don¡¯t want to stop spending the revenue that they count on from us in taxes and royalties.¡±

She urged leadership, said the government could learn from Mrs Thatcher and claimed she was not alone in wanting politicians to act.

¡°Now is the time to change some thinking and urge leadership. We all have a role to play in mitigating the thinking that¡¯s not helping our country¡¯s future, including the entitlements mentality of individuals, companies ¡ª and our leaders.

¡°The left don¡¯t want to address the issue. Instead they get hysterical and personal about who speaks out ¡ª in this case, sometimes me.¡±

Rinehart this week dropped 10 places on the Forbes Magazine rich list, despite getting richer. Her current wealth is estimated to have increased in the last year by $US700 million but her ranking dropped from 36 to 46.

In her own family, a bitter battle over who was entitled to control a $5 billion family trust has been dragging through the courts for two years.

I was not aware that Gina Rinehart was such a strong supporter of protecting institutionalised Paedophilia. Turns out that the Thatcher government was really big on that point (And had several paedophiles in it too).

Anyway, once again an economically inept hereditary billionaire bit-player in a dwindling market steps up anti welfare rhetoric to distract attention from the vastly more important ongoing tax reform business. Since her customers are mostly overseas, she doesn't particularly care if the Australian economy goes down the tubes and I am sure she would like there to be more money available to subsidise her company some more.

Her time would be better spent on getting the government to stop the mining giants (Of which she is not one) to cease increasing production and perhaps even throttle it back.

I think in the last thread I posted an article on how the biggest minders were increasing production in a deliberate effort to drive down the price of iron, and how businesses like those belonging to Twiggy and Rinehart were losing out badly, barely being able to break even as a result. Lowering the price of labour via union destruction (One of her pet policies, and what she actually refers to by invoking Thatcher) is only a temporary solution for them, since it would drive down costs across the board, and the bigger players who are doing this to drive their competition out of business get all the benefits of it to.

This is why I call her economically inept. She hates people so much that she can't even act in her own self interest. The world will be a better place when she swallows her own tongue and chokes to death.
