So my conure is going through puberty I think. My wife says he humps her hand. Anything I can do to stop it? Are there any birdie escort services available?

Right now, your wife's hand is the bird escort. Make sure he's getting 12 his of uninterrupted sleep and remove anything that he might view as a nest (fleece huts and such).

Jose Oquendo posted:So my conure is going through puberty I think. My wife says he humps her hand. Anything I can do to stop it? Are there any birdie escort services available? When ours started doing that, it didn't really get better until we both started consistently moving the bird away from us whenever she would try to rub her vent on one of us. At first I would be the one to notice and take her off of my partner, but I think she got the impression that I was just jealous of her and my partner being ~together forever~ and she didn't really stop until he started "rejecting" her himself. We would say "bad touch!" and move her to somewhere different (not the floor, just somewhere else so she'd get the point). Now she very infrequently tries to present her butt to us, and just yelling "BAD TOUCH!" at her makes her stop. We have trained her to be properly ashamed of her body, like a good girl. Also I keep throwing my arms up and going WEEEHHHH much to the alarm/amusement of my partner and bird. edit: Sadly I deleted the screenshot I took from a Facebook GCC group of a woman saying she let her male GCC hump her to completion, because he was "so snuggly and calm afterwards" D: Pile of Kittens fucked around with this message at 20:42 on Apr 5, 2015 |

Mild update, I guess. Pie's been doing much, much better with responding to "no bite" when biting my ears and lets go almost immediately. He catches onto things like that pretty quick, thankfully. Still working on desensitizing him to when I'm not in the room or walking a few steps away but that's more slow going. He's still not eating much of his vegetables anymore, and will generally pick out one or two pieces of apple and then just leave the rest. Now he's decided that my hair is The Place To Be, though, like the last picture I uploaded. I wouldn't mind this if he wasn't also shoving his entire head against my scalp and licking chunks of my hair from root to tip, which is pretty gross and also making my hair kinda gross feeling. It's not actively harming me, though, and I don't use any product in my hair that could make him sick, so whatever floats his boat I guess?

Keep working on the desensitization, just keep working up the length of time you're gone. Start off with being just out of sight and see if you can wait until he's quiet before returning, you'll teach him to be calm. Work your way up to five minutes out of the room, and then you can start establishing flock calls for when you'll just be out of the room for a bit, gone for just a short while, or gone for a long time. If you can teach them that then he'll be a lot more calm because he knows to expect you'll be gone for a long time and settle himself down.

Also birds don't generate saliva, so the only stuff gunking up your hair is food debris.

Stuff like this is one of the reasons I decided birds were not for me when I was looking into getting a pet. I would prefer not to worry about my pet thinking I'm its mate.

Cythereal posted:Stuff like this is one of the reasons I decided birds were not for me when I was looking into getting a pet. I would prefer not to worry about my pet thinking I'm its mate. Eh, they get over it. You just have to set boundaries. Cats and dogs can be incurable humpers too, but they're too dumb to figure out that you're just not interested in them like that (probably because they don't form relationships on those terms on their own or whatever). Birds will eventually get the idea that you're just not interested in being their mate and they redirect or stop entirely. My bird still tries to hit on the occasional guest but she's pretty much resigned to her fate as a celibate bird-nun. Thank you, Khizan. The horror. edit: and before anyone asks, the reason the timestamps look like that is because I set my language to Pirate on Facebook. I highly recommend it.

Loki only tried to do that once. I don't know where he got his kicks after that, but it was never on or around us. I know my wife had some problems with it with the budgie she grew up with as a teenager, but he stopped when she set some boundaries too. Bird puberty is definitely annoying, but they grow to understand the rules and defined relationships.

Today I had marceline out because I've been trying, again, to spend time with her because she recently started plucking as well. She has bit my fingers a lot in the past few days because I'm trying to not use a glove - fine, whatever. I don't need my fingers anyway. The problem is that she was on my shoulder for .5 seconds and sunk her entire beak into my face. I'm having a really hard time not just leaving her in her cage all day and letting zomo handle her. It really hurts

If you've been bitten that often in a short time aren't you maybe rushing things a bit? When/why has she been biting you? Did you get her clipped yet? If you want her on your shoulder, maybe wear a hoodie next time? Even though Inko's hatred is towards hands he's never been on a shoulder before, and wouldn't be without protection because the thought of him grinding and latching on to an ear or my cheek is arghhh Or maybe just dump her in your lap and have her sit nicely there instead for a while, if you want her on you.

Battle Pigeon posted:If you've been bitten that often in a short time aren't you maybe rushing things a bit? When/why has she been biting you? Did you get her clipped yet? She's clipped now, yeah. And honestly I almost wanted her to bite me so I could actually react correctly and put her on the ground/ignore/teach her she's going to step up and to loving dwi/etc. It's working to a point, she has started coming to my finger to get out of the cage. I have a 50/50 chance of being bitten but when she does i just put her on the ground, ignore her, then take out finn and marshall and take them out of the room. She's seeming to realize when she bites me she gets left behind. She won't sit in my lap, she immediately tries to climb. Also she tried to bite my knee the last time I did that? My knee. Seriously. Hoodie is a good idea but she always tries to burrow behind your head if you're wearing them and I can't even imagine her biting my neck over and over p.s. Maybe the bird hates women? I've heard it's pretty common for some birds to just be dicks to certain sexes for whatever reason. Albert's beak is getting all lovely. He is on good pellets, has plenty of carrots (vitamin a) and goes through a cuttlebone every few weeks. Must just be getting the flakes. Well, Roscoe had his first trip to the vet today. He apparently has extra oily poops, a sensitive tooshie, and air in his gullet, which means that he's not digesting his food well. Doc thinks it might be a pancreas infection. Little buddy gets some visits from the Towel Demon this week for antibiotics She thinks his plucking might be a sign of the physical irritation rather than stress/sadness. If that's the case, it'd be awesome to not look at his butthole any more. Other thing of note: The doctor (an avian specialist) recommended that I not switch him over to pellets. Apparently, seeds are fine as long as they get a source of vitamin A. Pellets can apparently increase the risk of digestive infections down the road due to atrophying of the gullet muscles. Very interesting and definitely not what I was expecting to hear. Anyway, here's a picture of the little bastard sleeping in my hand.
