Has HoneyHoney ever been posted in here? Would this even be the right thread/genre? I'm not a huge music person but something clicked for me and I've been listening a lot. First heard them on the Joe Rogan Experience, and sadly found out that I had missed them in person recently. "Angel of Death" (they have an official music video for it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcaKzBC5RJM) Favorite version of it: http://youtu.be/8MxCAGaupKU?list=PL07FC2DE0F1F19CB7

It's pretty mainstream, but I've been enjoying WRKA's webfeed while I work (http://player.tritondigital.com/embed.php?embedid=14591). They're the Louisville station (The Hawk) that's pioneering the "no bro" retro-ish country genre. Nothing "alt" about them, but they're a nice time machine to 10-20 years ago. Only wish they had a bigger playlist, but they're a commercial country station, so they are what they are.

I just want to give a shout out to the annual Rhythm N' Blooms here in Knoxville, TN. It is a small festival that takes part in the Old City portion of Knoxville. It is pretty much bar hopping to one bar to the other watching different bands for 3 days. They do have a stage where the bigger bands play, but the indoor venues (bars and bars) are the best. Also some of the bands play more than once (Shovels and Rope last year played the outdoor stage and a bar later that night). Current list so far for 2015 (they are adding more bands in the next couple of weeks): http://www.rhythmnbloomsfest.com/ The Decemberists Drive-By-Truckers The Dirty Guv'nahs Delta Spirit Langhorne Slim & The Law The Apache Relay Alanna Royale Count This Penny Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes 3 day pass are $60, and a 1 day pass runs $25 or so (not available yet). Also you can volunteer for 4 hours at the festival to earn a free day pass. I went last year for the first time, and it was a lot of fun for the price (the $25 is worth it just to see Drive-By-Truckers and The Decemberists). So if you are in the area or near-by you should check it out. Also American Aquarium played here last Friday, and man they are great. Worth checking out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biz1ljy2Wdw

Have The Wood Brothers been mentioned yet? More singer/songwriter type stuff than country, but great soulful songs. Chris Wood is the bassist for Medeski, Martin, and Wood, and Oliver did a bunch of blues stuff back in the day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3U0arXdrvlE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbqpyqOyUKI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYY1T7BYd9U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hf-QI2EdUhg And a longer one, several songs with an interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkVq7VmH6eE

I figured this might fit in this thread, but apologies if I'm wrong... I recently released an album that's currently free to download. I tend to describe it as grungey alt-country stuff with shades of Tom Waits and Nick Cave. There's some folk in there too. Anyway, hopefully some of you enjoy it. I just bought the Inside Llewyn Davis album (the full thing isn't on Spotify). It is fantastic. Some of the songs have the Punch Brothers on them in addition to be a T. Bone Burnett produced endeavor. The actor who sings most of the main songs is pretty cool too.

There are like three tracks where they have singing credits listed on the album. They're such bluegrass jokers! I guess I could see a situation where they played the album but not the movie though. Those two records are nearly flawless (I'd remove some of side 2 on Straightaways but whatever) and I'd just go ahead and lump Wide Swing Tremolo in there too. I don't think I've ever been so obsessed with a band in my life as I was with Son Volt's original line-up. I've seen them many times and can't say that I've ever enjoyed myself more at a show. I used to buy tons of beer all at once, line them all up on stage right in front of Jay and just drink and sing along all night. I was so excited when they got back together and recorded one of Alejandro Escovedo's tunes and announced that they were going to reunite permanently. I can't tell you how crestfallen I was when that didn't happen.

I'm a fan of their older music especially but I'd still have a good time unless it's literally just material from their last two albums. I'm in the exact same boat as you. I remember seeing them 12 years ago in tiny little jam packed venues for $15. Now it seems like tickets are $40 minimum.

New Ray Wylie Hubbard record's been out for a while. It's good - titled The Ruffian's Misfortune. I don't recall seeing it mentioned. The older he gets, the better he gets: it continues in the direction of the last few, and his son is playing guitar on it again.

I recently got turned onto early material from The Jayhawks. Was/is there anyone else doing a pretty accurate reflection of Gram Parsons' stuff like they did? A lot of the 'alt country' stuff I hear has a bit too much rock for what I like in country sounds.

I'm going to visit a friend in Denver in July and coincidentally The Avett Brothers and Sturgill Simpson are playing at Red Rocks while I'll be out there. I like the Avett Bros, especially their early stuff and am really into Sturgill. How are these guys live? Is it worth the $80 for tickets?

I am glad I saw the Avett Brothers live, but I wouldn't pay anything north of $30 to see them again. I haven't seen Sturgill live yet, but I will see him in September (tixs only $20). So overall I would say $80 is outrageous. Still I always wanted to see a show at Red Rocks, so if this is your only choice to do that it might be worth it. If not just wait for Strugill to come around your neck of the woods at a cheaper price.

If anyone lives in the Milwaukee area, you can get great reserved seating tickets to see Punch Brothers (6/26) for $5 each right now. Here's the skinny: 1. Download the Summerfest app 2. Claim the free weekday entry ticket 3. Go to Ticketmaster and find the Punch Brothers 6/26 show at the BMO Harris Pavilion 4. Get up to 4 tickets, $5 service charge per. I just did all of the above and snagged row 8 on one of the sides so there's still probably a ton available.

Yeah I wasn't super impressed with Iron & Wine either. I feel like if you're playing music that delicate you need to elevate your performance or visuals to make it worthwhile. The current Sufjan Stevens tour is a good example of how to create a large-crowd atmosphere around quiet and introspective music.

He did play Love Vigilantes which is my favorite cover that he does so that made my night.
