Yeah I've never seen the issue with donks because, aesthetics and taste aside, they're doing it to worthless garbage cars from the worst eras of American car design that will never be worth anything anyway.

xzzy posted:Someone, somewhere considers them collectible. I like to think of it this way: literally every car is a collectible classic. The only thing that varies is how long it takes for it to reach that phase. 80's/90's land-barge American junkers are at the far end of the spectrum, so they'll be collectible classics around 2050. By the time a car is over fifty years old it becomes collectible by default just because of how few survivors there are and how they represent a bygone era etc etc.

POKEMAN SAM posted:Don't collector cars qualify for reduced registration fees in most states? They just "require" you don't drive it much. There's "antique" and "classic" plates here. Antique limits you to driving to car shows, driving in parades, and "occasional trips to the mechanic" - also exempt from any form of inspection. Classic has no limitations, and allows daily driver status, but still gets a yearly safety inspection. Guess which one you see more of?

In MA, the limits are: - mileage? Not sure - occasional use (you can drive one weekday) - sundays - parades - club events (so, say, if I wanted to take it to Pennsylvania for a 4 wheeling trip, starting on a Wednesday, with my jeep club) - bringing it to the mechanic or for maintenance/repair purposes I dunno about you, but I can give a list half a mile long of things I might possibly be troubleshooting at any given moment. Oh, and it only has to pass the inspection that was required at year of manufacture.

I think I agree with the reddit thread that given those prices I probably would just use that dealer. Only the transmission service is significantly more expensive, the rest of that stuff is more or less the same and I'd rather get the dealer service records, and even with the transmission it's probably worth it to go to the dealer just so they use the right fluid. Also newer VWs have 36 months free maintainance so

All I'm trying to say is that I think this thread doesn't respect donk owners sometimes and assumes they're being totally serious when they're really just putting a lot of effort into what's basically a joke car.
