It's extremely likely this is at least somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Urban car culture tends to have a streak of irony to it that this thread seems to miss a lot of the time. Most of those food label donks and bubbles folks were posting earlier probably started as jokes too, but a big part of the culture is to start with a joke and then take it to the furthest point you can with the same care and detail you'd give a serious project.

Probably the usual problem Ford (and others) seem to have with white paint, on the paint underneath. My all-white P71 has several spots where the paint has just removed itself, no evidence of damage otherwise. Some down to primer, a couple down to steel.

My '95 XJ tops out at 95-ish. 4-banger just can't push it past that. I image the extra 60 HP from the 4.0L goes a bit faster.
According to the specs for my P71, it won't hit the 140 MPH top speed on the speedo because I have the 3.55 rear gears. Top speed before fuel cut is something like 127 MPH.
Did 120 indicated in my '70 Cutlass once, before I upgraded the suspension. It was *just* a bit floaty. At least I had the FE3 suspension stock, so it had somewhat stiffer springs, and an actual rear swaybar.

You say that, but in the last few years I've seen a handful of those 80's shitboxes rolling around with vintage plates on, which you only do if you care about the car.

Someone, somewhere considers them collectible.

Don't collector cars qualify for reduced registration fees in most states? They just "require" you don't drive it much.

That's how it works in Illinois, yeah. The car is limited to 3000 miles a year to qualify. No idea if they actually enforce that.

I like to think of it this way: literally every car is a collectible classic. The only thing that varies is how long it takes for it to reach that phase. 80's/90's land-barge American junkers are at the far end of the spectrum, so they'll be collectible classics around 2050. By the time a car is over fifty years old it becomes collectible by default just because of how few survivors there are and how they represent a bygone era etc etc.

There's "antique" and "classic" plates here.

Antique limits you to driving to car shows, driving in parades, and "occasional trips to the mechanic" - also exempt from any form of inspection. Classic has no limitations, and allows daily driver status, but still gets a yearly safety inspection.

Guess which one you see more of? :v:

In MA, the limits are:
- mileage? Not sure
- occasional use (you can drive one weekday)
- sundays
- parades
- club events (so, say, if I wanted to take it to Pennsylvania for a 4 wheeling trip, starting on a Wednesday, with my jeep club)
- bringing it to the mechanic or for maintenance/repair purposes

I dunno about you, but I can give a list half a mile long of things I might possibly be troubleshooting at any given moment.

Oh, and it only has to pass the inspection that was required at year of manufacture.

I bet at least half that price is the cost of 5 ~Superior German Spark Plugs~ that you can only get at the VW dealer or your car will blow up!!

Getting the equivalent NKG or Bosch plugs is $50 (exactly what VW uses, just don't come in a VW box).

I think I agree with the reddit thread that given those prices I probably would just use that dealer. Only the transmission service is significantly more expensive, the rest of that stuff is more or less the same and I'd rather get the dealer service records, and even with the transmission it's probably worth it to go to the dealer just so they use the right fluid.

Also newer VWs have 36 months free maintainance so :effort:

And 10,000 mile intervals. That's three oil changes. Last I was at the dealer, that would have come out to $270 you're saving.

I'm a half-cracker who grew up in a 90% black neighborhood. That post is pretty loving awkwardly phrased though.

All I'm trying to say is that I think this thread doesn't respect donk owners sometimes and assumes they're being totally serious when they're really just putting a lot of effort into what's basically a joke car.
