I thought True traitor, True Whore was alight, but Scar Sighted is pretty goddamn great. Apparently Midnight Odyssey has a new album in the works called Shards of Silver Fade, hadn't heard anything about it until today. They've got a preview track out and I'm liking it, especially the second half. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7ev8ntn2lM Hits all the right Midnight Odyssey notes of death, space, and death in space.

Massive Conspiracy Against All Life is incredible and probably the best album of his to get into if you dig Scar Sighted. Lurker of Chalice is also another great project of his. They both have a really similar atmosphere to Scar Sighted. His earlier stuff is really hit-or-miss, and I really don't like True Traitor, True Whore.

I have a soft spot for The Tenth Sub-Level of Suicide because the hate on that album feels so palpable. loving Your Ghost In Chains of Ice is a GREAT track. MCAAL is definitely the best other Leviathan album in my opinion. If you like the title track off Scar Sighted you should dig Lurker of Chalice as well. There is loads of interesting stuff to explore in his back catalogue, but the earlier stuff is much less consistent, basically. Misthyrming and Leviathan are already more exciting than any black metal record I heard last year.

I'll second every Leviathan recommendation here, Massive Conspiracy is a must listen. I'd also check out the Howl Mockery At The Cross compilation if only for "Summoning Lupine"

As proof as to how far behind I fell on my black metal last year, I literally only just found out about Petrychor's Makrokosmos about 5 minutes ago. Listening to it now. Will give the new Midnight Odyssey song a listen after I take care of listening to Petrychor. E: New Petrychor is way more posty ambient than black metal, but still pretty good. Trees and Squids posted:Some of the absolute shittiest lyrics I've ever read It depends on how you look at them I guess. I think they're hilariously comical. Almost in a camp-horror "creepshow" kind of way. But if you're looking for serious "trve kvlt" black metal I can see how they could be taken as seriously annoying. Or even if you're just looking at them from a neutral perspective I could see how they would be lovely, but it's all opinion. I think they're hilariously bad, and fit in with the whole "spooky scary ghost story" thing the band has going.

Apparently, Immortal is no more. It's only... Abbath! 2015 will bear witness to the return of Abbath. IMMORTAL's frontman and founding member, whose real name is Olve Eikemo, has been writing and rehearsing fervently, with a deluge of new material ready to be recorded. Unable to come to an agreement in order move forward with the other members of the band, he has formed a new lineup. While grateful and respectful for the contributions of Demonaz, Horgh and Apollyon, Abbath felt the time was now right for him to present his art to the world and continue to evolve the legacy. The next two years will see the release of a new album alongside select live performances. The first of these to be announced is The Forum in London on Friday, September 18. This will be Abbath's first time back on stage in the U.K. since triumphantly headlining Bloodstock festival in 2011 alongside W.A.S.P. and MOTÖRHEAD. Following this, February 2016 will see a return to playing on home soil as the headliner for the prestigious Blastfest in Bergen — on top of a 100 percent Norwegian lineup. ABBATH is a continued weaving of this artist's creative thread: new songs have been honed, ready to sit alongside classic IMMORTAL material and rarely — if ever — played gems that will be unearthed from an epic catalogue spanning over two decades. Using his own name is a natural step for Abbath, having become iconic and synonymous with the band that he co-founded in 1990. That's 25 years of powering face first into the northern wind; a milestone for any band, and rather than exploit it by dragging IMMORTAL's name through the mud, Abbath will instead carry his own on his back. The name of IMMORTAL, for the time being, will rest; the essence, the power, the music — and Abbath — will not. Abbath last year claimed that he rightfully attempted to secure exclusive rights to the IMMORTAL name and logo after lyricist/guitarist Demonaz (real name Harald Nævdal) and drummer Horgh (real name Reidar Horghagen) effectively quit the legendary Norwegian black metal group.

Abbath is who we're all really interested in, so I'll be following his solo career, but it's too bad the Immortal dispute couldn't be worked out. I really enjoyed Horgh's drumming; I'm not sure to what extent Demonaz influenced Immortal music after he quit the live lineup, so not sure how to feel yet about his departure. Regardless, the solo album will probably be awesome.

Captain Scandinaiva posted:I hope so, I haven't seen them live. The band name as far as I know. Abbath wanted to own the name "Immortal" or something like that? But Vintersorg is right. Whatever Abbath goes on and does now (which I'm hoping will be more of that I project) is basically going to be Immortal, so if you're looking to see Immortal live you should be solid, even if it won't be "brand name Immortal."

There's a new Clandestine Blaze record out called New Golgotha Rising. Can't link because I'm on my phone, but they seem to have a bandcamp now so you should check it out. I finally got round to checking out the Funereal Presence album from last year and it loving owns. Tight and riffy with tons of atmosphere and some weird but effective clean vocals. Slightly outside the standard realms of the thread, but has anyone else heard the Pyramids album? The vocals remind me a lot of Radiohead and the whole album is weird and compelling.
