joshua's in such a boring position where he's too good for bums but too green to really step up so it's just pointless fight after pointless fight

He's going to fight Kevin Johnson next, who's only plus is that he's a "crafty" (read: doesn't engage) veteran who should be able to take Joshua at least into the midrounds. After that they're going after "big domestic fights", which I can only imagine means David Price and/or maybe Dereck Chisora.

To be honest he's already a top 8~ heavyweight in the division, so yeah, he's in a bit of an awkward situation. He can't get fights with the top guys anyway even if he wanted to though so he might as well start fighting gatekeeper types.

Quillin apparently missed weight for his title fight with Lee. So not only did he vacate the belt and lose out on a 1.4 million dollar payday but now he's not eligible to win the belt back either.

I dunno what Haymon's really clever master plan with Quillin was but I don't think, after all was said and done, coming in overweight and not even loving winning was it. What a clown.

Miguel Cotto's first fight with Roc Nation will be against Daniel Geale on June 6th at the Barclays Center

http://www.boxingscene.com/cotto-geale-clash-head-barclays-on-june-6th--89707

That K9 Bundrage swerve tho

EDIT: At 157 Catchweight for the 'lineal' middleweight title :cripes:

https://twitter.com/ben_damon/status/587747334638833665

VVVV The WBC gave Cotto one 'voluntary defense' and honestly Daniel Geale-even at a joke of a catchweight-really isn't all that bad but after that he has to face his the mandatory or drop the belt. Cotto's openly talked about just dropping the belt if it's the best thing for career and given where he is at I don't doubt his sincerity but the championship is a powerful bargaining tool and it's only right that a fighter holds onto to as long as they can.

what does this mean for cotto not fighting his mandatory challenger in ggg? nothing as usual?

The Ninth Layer
Jun 20, 2007

Probably nothing. Cotto brings in the dollars and it's unlikely he'll be stripped anytime soon.

The matchup doesn't really do anything for me. It's better than a stay-busy fight in the sense that Geale isn't some horrible unknown of a fighter, but if Cotto can't beat Geale he has no business calling himself the middleweight champion anyway. This match may only be compelling because of how many question marks still hover over Cotto. Is he really a revitalized fighter under Roach? Or did he have a great performance against a Martinez whose shelf life was up?

I think if Cotto does win this fight there'll be no excuses for him left if he doesn't search for an Alvarez or Golovkin match. With what Roc Nation is paying him, I'd have to imagine they're planning on a bigger return for Cotto in the fall.

The Ninth Layer
Jun 20, 2007

Ironic that Cotto's fans always like to bring up how he drained himself to get to that 145 lb limit to take on Manny Pacquiao, but now that he's the fighter taking on bigger guys he's the one putting in catchweights. I won't say anything about the middleweight champion defending his title at a catchweight because, to be honest, I didn't expect Cotto to fight a middleweight to begin with so good on him for taking on Geale.

make sure to include that it's all For The Fans and that the cheapest ticket is $1500(for the 1000 that are going on general sale) and the ppv is $100

Anyways ton of boxing on (US) tv thus weekend. Roc Nation has their second card on Fox Sports 1 in addition to Friday Nights Fights. And of course the doubleheader on HBO and Chavez Jr vs Fonfara on Showtime tomorrow night.

Edit: Apparently Cal State (Dominguez Hills, which is located in Carson) students and alumni are being offered free tickets. In contrast Golovkin - Rubio ended up needing standing room Makes you think.

Enough bars/restaurants/etc. will be screening the fight (easiest option is probably a Dave and Buster's if you've got one near you, the one here is promoting the fight and offering a food/drinks/games/guaranteed seating package pretty heavily on the radio) to offset the high PPV costs, though. That and most people that are interested are probably going to split the bill with friends that watch it with them.

I'm really sour about the closed circuit prices coming to $150 a head in Vegas. Like as dumb as it sounds I'm now tempted to just bring a laptop or something and pirate the fight.

Anyone going to be in Vegas to watch the Mayweather Pacquiao fight at one of the MGM Casinos? Does anyone have any previous experience going to the MGM Sportsbooks to watch the fight? I understand that there is really nothing the fight on May 2nd could be compared to but I'm wondering how they are going to handle the influx of people at the sportsbooks?

It's usually first come first server/people who reserved tables. After that everyone is just standing outside.

What do you mean standing outside? Just outside the Sportsbooks where they can still see the TV or literally standing outside the casino because they are denied entry due to capacity issues?
