Supposedly this friendly scrimmage between some hot shot Tomcat pilot and the new Eagle was a demonstration of how awesome the F-15 was. Turns out the Tomcat pilot didn't like being used as an easy kill and loving smoked the F-15 pilot with the gun kill. Apparently the demo was enough to give the Japanese some concern whether or not to buy into the Eagle.

A-7 pilots were notorious for getting guns kills on F-14s flown by younger guys during open sea skirmishes by just slowing down to under 270 kts and forcing the Tomcats to overshoot. Supposedly S-3 guys would do this to them a lot too
