Doesn't rule out suicide, but absolutely none of them were sober that I can remember.

Honestly, Ray, Warner, and Elliot are all clusterfucks because they're the main ways that everyone in Ahwatukee uses to get out to the rest of the world. Chandler doesn't seem to be too bad since they upgraded the bridge but I rarely get that far south anymore without just going all the way to Firebird or the 202.

Don't just sit there in the loving lane to have a conversation with someone on the sidewalk.

People do this in my condo complex all the time. It's not really dangerous since the speed limit is so low, but they always park in the middle of the road and chat with someone who is also standing in the middle of the road, leaving no room to pass them. It's not like there aren't plenty of empty parking spaces if you want to pull aside and have a chat, either.

On an unrelated note, I was in the right lane on the way home today and a guy in the left lane who had been hovering on my left rear quarter panel for like half a minute suddenly put on his right signal and then immediately honked and gestured angrily at me, apparently quite peeved that my existence was hindering his sudden and desperate need to turn right. :saddowns:

Edit: And earlier today I was behind another guy in the left lane who kept turning on his right blinker over and over. Every time, the guy next to me would slow down to let him in, but Blinker Guy would just kept maintaining pace with the car right next to him and then eventually turn off his blinker in frustration when that car failed to vanish into the aether. Then a few seconds later he'd try it again. Went on for a couple miles, and when I finally turned off, the poor guy was still trapped in the left lane as he drove off into the distance, his intermittently flashing right turn signal like a desperate plea to the highway gods to save him from his eternal imprisonment.

The aftermaths I saw of an accident yesterday in Niagara Falls was enough of a reminder to drive more carefully. There's no news article about it yet but a small car was completely shattered to smithereens and whoever was being carried on a gurney was covered by a blanket. I'm pretty sure they only do that if someone's dead. I can't fathom how anyone in that vehicle would have survived. I'm not going to pretend it didn't disturb me.

You're only supposed to go like 35 at that intersection. It should have just been a stupid fender bender!

The whole car looked like this:

A crash this serious would be in the local news. I'm surprised it's not already. Maybe they're having issues contacting next of kin? There is a brief mention of it on the Fire Wire.

I'm morbidly curious about what happened. It looked like a pickup truck had smashed a smaller car to bits somehow. The truck was still mostly intact compared to the car.

Guys, if the light JUST turned green and you're about to enter the intersection, please briefly glance in case there's that jackass who's gunning it because he doesn't want to get stuck at the light.

Works in Europe. Trucks are speed limited and usually can't pass cars except in special zones. Makes it so there aren't miles and miles of traffic backed up because of a 65.99 to 66 mph drag race that goes on for 10 miles.

In California trucks are always at 55 (unless the whole highway goes lower or downhill grades) while car traffic can go 65-70. That's insane.

edit: and those are the speed limits, not the speed that the flow of traffic has decided.

Europe is identical, HGVs Europe-wide are limited to at best 56mph (90kph) while light traffic can do like 70+ (or whatever you like on the Autobahn).

Truck traffic is signed at 55 mph in Illinois as well, but not a single truck adheres to it. They're always pegged at whatever their limiter is set to, somewhere in the 60's.

We should also put tighter restrictions on the hours of service, and cut trucks back to the 80,000lb max weight to stop them from tearing up the roads.

If there's one thing that will alleviate our truck-related traffic concerns, it's 50% more of them on the road.

Realistically, limiting all trucks to the same speed won't stop them from trying to pass each other. A truck with a lighter load will be quicker than a truck with a heavier load on most roads. A truck with more power and more gears will be quicker than the 330hp 9 speed freightshaker discount special. You can't expect every truck on the road to travel at the speed of the heaviest, least powerful truck.

The tires on my truck are 34/32nds new, and illegal at 2/32nds. That's a full inch of treadwear, 2 inches off the diameter through the life of the tire. As it wears, it moves from 42" diameter, 132" circumference to 40 inch diameter 125.5" circumference. That means If it's limited to 60mph on new tires, by the time they're worn it's only capable of 57mph. Every truck behind me has to choose to do 57mph behind me, taking a $1.50/hour pay cut for drivers, or $4-5/hour pay cut for O/Os, or pass me doing 3mph faster.

If you want truckers to stop being dicks, allot them a reasonable amount of time to complete a route, and pay them hourly so they don't need to squeak every loving mile out of their rapidly diminishing hours of service. There's no incentive to run 18 hours a day or pass at 66 the dude doing 65 when you get paid hourly, and are given 2 days to run a route expected to take 22 hours. When you're given 2 days to run a route that when runs perfectly against the speed limit takes 26 hours, and you're only allowed driving 13 hours a day, you get the stupidity you're all complaining about. The solution to people acting poorly due to being abused isn't to start abusing them further for your convenience.

In my mind, I'd think it'd be better to just keep trucks out of the leftmost lane on any road with 3 or more lanes.

This is how I understand the normal procedure for a pedestrian impact.

Since you're hopefully already fully on the brakes before the impact, you stop and call the authorities. Then you wait until the police and firetrucks and ambulances etc. arrive, presumably all the while talking to a very friendly and understanding person on the phone. You obviously shouldn't be left alone after such an event, and there will be a psychologist at the scene for you to talk to, as well.

You'll be escorted to a car and you'll be taken away from the scene along with the psychologist, taking care that you don't have to look at anything gruesome. Of course you'll be taken off duty until you're mentally fit again, there will be several sessions with a psychologist before that happens.

The emergency crews will start cleaning up, first by picking and shoveling up any bits that are large enough, and then by spreading quicklime over the rest. The parts can be distributed over several hundred meters of track, so it's no small task. Obviously they'll also clean up the train as well as they can, and I assume the train will be taken out of service for a thorough cleanup as soon as possible.

A replacement driver will be dispatched to drive the train to its destination. I cannot imagine how grim that task must be. Train drivers usually work alone, but I sure hope the replacement driver gets a partner in this type of situation.

Suicide-by-train: Don't loving do it. You'll make a nervous wreck of even the toughest train driver and possibly ruin his ability to ever work as a train driver again. It can result in severe PTSD and destroy lives and families.

I was watching an old BBC documentary about the Mumbai Suburban Railway that was being repeated on BBC Four the other day, they explained their process for if they hit someone:

1) the train stops
2) the guard and the driver remove the body from the track and put it next to the line
3) they proceed to the next station, where the guard notifies the staff/police that there's a body x kilometres away
4) they continue on their journey.

This is because of several reasons, firstly the trains are horribly overloaded, in the peaks they can deal with over 4500 people on a 9 car train (which has a recommended capacity of 1500), which works out at about 14 people per square metre. So if you're stopped for a long time the lack of airflow through the carriages is going to cause problems for the other passengers. Secondly, the railway kills shitloads of people so it would entirely break the service if they had to do things the way they're done elsewhere. To quote wiki:

On an average, about 2000 people die annually on the Mumbai Suburban Rail network: over the past 10 years (2002–2012), more than 36,152 lives have been lost on tracks and 36,688 people have been injured. A record 17 people died every weekday on the city's suburban railway network in 2008.

That seems like wishful thinking to me. I'd like to see the politician who can explain to John Q Taxpayer and Suzy D Populistic-Voter, that there will be an entire motorway to finance with tax money, which they aren't allowed to use.

Just make a 4 or more lanes in either direction motorway and prohibit lorries from using any lanes but the two most outside ones.

Define "works".

You still get trucks trying to overtake each other except at 79.99 and 80 km/h unless explicitly forbidden, which is a separate thing.

What this causes instead is a huge speed difference between the trucks and the rest of traffic which is a huge pain in the rear end. Coming up to the two trucks drag racing? Gotta lose 50+ km/h of speed and then accelerate again. A truck cuts you off to begin its maneuver? Hit the loving brakes RIGHT NOW because its bumper is approaching at 50km/h. Want to take an exit? Tough poo poo, the exit lane is packed with trucks going half your speed for miles.

I nearly ran a dude off the road today. There was a car in the middle lane, so I was passing it in the left lane. Then I changed lanes to the middle and was changing to the rightmost lane when he came zooming up, overtaking traffic on the right.

I get that you just want to keep going without changing lanes, and I do it myself sometimes, depending on the situation. But goddammit, you're the one doing something "wrong" and unexpected, so you have to be super super aware and not just barge ahead.

So I got in behind him at flicked the lights, in return he flipped me off. That's how it usually goes, I guess.
