This is awesome. Hopefully they finish. Why wasn't' there an English release of Dragon Ball Online anyway? It's must be the only game we haven't gotten in like 15 years.

It never even got released in Japan. It was out in Korea and I think Taiwan for a few years and then died.

I played it for a bit towards the end of its life, and it's just kind of a DBZ flavored but otherwise standard Korean MMO. Also by the time I was playing it they were running in game ads in English explaining how to use PayPal to buy microtransactions, which is both funny and highlights how poorly it must have been doing.

I looked him up on the dragonball wiki. Is he as offensive to homosexuals and uncomfortable for women as it implies? It's been a long time since I saw it.

Eh I think as far as women it's fine as his only real interaction with one is when Bulma attempts to seduce him and fails hilariously due to the gay.

As far as the gay angle, in the manga I would say he's as offensive as the effete henchman from North by Northwest - not particularly offensive in isolation but indicates scorn for homosexuals when considered in context, ie, there are few or no positive depictions of homosexuality in shōnen contemporary to the period in which the General Blue chapters were published just as there were few or no positive depictions of homosexuality in mainstream cinema contemporary to the period in which North by Northwest was first in movie theaters.

In other words, in the manga General Blue is about as offensive to gays as Lunch is offensive to women.

As far as the anime goes he's hella offensive because they show him lusting after Obochaman - in other words, the anime glibly repeats the homosexuality = pedo meme.

Yeah, I saw that and wondered how I didn't remember it. Apparently, the American version made up something about him mistaking the kid for his long lost brother. Clearly out of place and random -- like the whole penguin village thing --, but loads less weird and offensive.

The Penguin Village thing kinda works better in the manga, I'd say. It has a great fakeout opening there too.

Anime tried to make it seem a bit different, but loses some of the spontaneity that the manga had.

Penguin village in the anime really annoyed me because they gave Goku like ten additional IQ points so that he could be the straight man foil to Arale's antics. What cinched my dislike of it (and I like Dr. Slump!) was when Arale wants to ride the kinto-un/flying nimbus and Goku is like "well, I don't know, you have to be pure of heart..." and Arale gets on it anyway and Goku is like "wow, you really must be a good person!" when previously and subsequently he goes around assuming everyone can ride it until proven otherwise. I looked up the scene in the manga and it looks like Arale just hops on and Goku only remarks on how this proves her innocence once she's actually sitting on it.

Then again, Blue getting freaked out by poop on a stick is pretty amusing.

In fairness, Goku is probably 10 IQ points higher than a character from a gag manga...probably...maybe...not really.

While we're on that topic, Goku is so out of focus in DBZ (and corresponding chapters) that he honestly feels like a more mature and multifaceted character at 15 than he ever does at any subsequent point.

I'm pretty sure the Tao Pai Pai arc is the last time he exhibits genuine empathy and introspection.

Arale is a robot. What's your excuse, Goku?

Yeah that's what I've brought up multiple times in dislike of DBZ. Goku is the hero still, but only in the sense that he comes in to solve the problem. Meanwhile Krilling, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo etc. all have arcs they're following and grownig and failing so Goku can succeed.

In the manga I read, he at first seems gay, which is a conclusion Bulma also arrives at, and then she tells him "At first I might appear as a woman, but I'm actually a dude" to which he replies "if that's the case, I'm definitely gonna kill you!"

So I am a bit confused as to what he actually is, since he doesn't seem to like women or men.

Honestly it looks like he's annoyed by her distractions and is snapping at her for her obvious lie.

This is actually a photo I took directly out of the mangos I bought so if anyone wants to see more from the first 12 volumes of Dragonball, ask away. They'll all be lovely photos like this though so if you want a nice version buy the manga since its dirt cheap, $15 for three volumes, so $5 per volume. The only problem is that the color pages are reproduced in black and white but that's standard.

Goku's character arc pretty much wrapped up at the end of Dragon Ball, is the excuse. You can argue the Saiyan saga if you want to count the "oh yeah, also...aliens" part of the story.

One thing reading this thread has taught me is that consistency is not Toriyama's forte.

Yes and it was a mistake to not allow other characters to actually do things subsequently since it then transforms Goku into punchmans Jesus.

Looking at the panels I posted earlier I realized that it's a testament to Toriyama's incredible artistry that you can grab any random set of panels that he's drawn and see that he's taken care to ensure that each one has a distinct silhouette. I decided to fill in the figures to make it clear (sadly I did this at work where I didn't have access to a good graphics program, so please forgive the low-tech approach.)

You can see clearly in each panel who is featured as well as their emotional state just from the silhouette. This is always good in a comic where you don't have a lot of time to dwell on individual moments and need to communicate a scene as efficiently and clearly as possible. One of my big complaints about trends in mainstream American comics is that people seem to value styles approaching photorealistic over actually good composition and so I find many comics confuse my brain when I try to read them because their panels are so cluttered and difficult to parse. The indie scene tends to do better on this front.

Say what you will about Toriyama's storytelling but he's a master artist and draftsman and it's quite remarkable how humble he is about it.

The next movie after F is probably going to be the real showdown between Goku and Beerus. I really wish Gohan was still the secret hero, because then we could completely undo GT all at once: Goku fails, Beerus starts destroying, Videl and Pan get killed by a god and are therefore unable to resurrect with dragonballs, Gohan freaks the gently caress out and goes to a completely different but still ape like SSJ4. Beerus gets ashed, proving what Vegeta started, that a mortal in love can kill a god. Kibito Kai gives his life to bring back Pan, they use the dragonballs to resurrect Old Kai, and he halo swaps Videl.

I really just want one more scene where everyone shits themselves because Gohan got mad.

I dunno why everyone thought Gohan would ever be the hero of the show. He's always been a reluctant warrior; it was even a plot point in the Cell Saga that Gohan knew he had a hidden rage but didn't want to let it control him. He's definitely the guy who would rather spend time with his girlfriend over fighting villains or getting stronger. Gohan is just not as motivated a fighter when compared to Goku or Vegeta. He has more raw talent than even Goku does but fighting has never been a priority for him.
