I think it's been slowly percolating since 2000 or so. It probably started with The Sopranos (and possibly The West Wing, to a lesser extent).

I'm not saying it just started now, I know the rise of HBO original shows are where I place the start of the TV evolution to what it is now. The Soproanos was definitely a big part of that. You are right, In 2000, Breaking Bad would have been an HBO show, but it would never have been on basic cable. Basic cable needed HBO originals to be hits so the cable channels could try to emulate them.

Canadian one hit wonders are either really generic or really bizarre. I don't mean the stuff that everyone knows about like She's So High or The Safety Dance. Artists like Elise Estrada, Belly and Shiloh are lucky that the content law exists because they wouldn't have gotten radio play otherwise. Sure, I heard them constantly in 2007/2008 but no one actually cared about them and they dropped off the radar almost immediately.

I would *love* an episode on that song! Ever since I saw the video several years ago, its weird badness has stuck in my mind. As for unusual Australian one hit wonders, the best I can think of off the top of my head is Man Overboard by Do Re Mi, which is like a feminist manifesto recited over music. According a commentator on TV during one of those history of Australian popular music shows, people would hear the song and go "Wait a minute? What was that about the penis envy and the pubic hairs?" and then they wouldn't be able to forget it.

Other than that, another great one is Horror Movie by Skyhooks. However, I don't listen to pop radio much so I'm not sure if I'm forgetting about some really odd Australian one hit wonders.

Oh wait, how could I forget about Pauline Pantsdown? She was a parody of this ridiculous politician we've got here called Pauline Hanson - just imagine Sarah Palin basically - and a drag queen made a couple of songs by chopping up bits of her speeches.

Ah, fair enough. I guess I just don't know enough about American telly, to be quite honest!

Nonetheless, it's something that interests me. It's curious that "prestige drama" used to mean stuff like Hill Street Blues and LA Law. Indeed, it's interesting to look at the series that were winning or being repeatedly nominated for the "Outstanding Drama Series" or "Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series" Emmy Awards 20-25 years ago; all stuff like Picket Fences and thirtysomething that just don't seem to have had a great shelf life. I wouldn't be surprised if Dennis Franz has as many awards for playing Andy Sipowicz as Bryan Cranston has for Walter White.

They do play in October!
If I could pick a One Hit Wonder subject, I'd want Todd to do Harvey Danger. Is anything other than "Flagpole Sitta" worth listening to? Do they even exist outside of this song?

I mean, of course the answer to that is yes, but they are definitely up there in terms of how huge a gap there is between their most popular song and whatever is #2 for them.

I love the dumbfounded look on the host's faces at the end. The bassline is great though.

Another weird thing about B-4-4 is that the twins from it are now in a Christian opera group called RyanDan (heh heh) and perform regularly alongside Shania Twain in Vegas.

I don't know who was doing the little host segment, because Countdown would have bands randomly take turns hosting - but the main host was Molly Meldrum and he always looked bumbling/like he was probably drunk and had no idea what the hell he was doing. That was part of his appeal.

Skyhooks had like five top ten hits in a row so they're certainly not OHWs. The Divinyls would probably count since the only had the one massive hit in I Touch Myself while Boys in Town was only a hit in Australia and Pleasure & Pain was only a moderate hit outside of Australia. Alternatively you could consider the Angels because they had an iconic rock track in "Am I ever gonna see your face again" but nobody really remembers their songs that were much more succesful on the charts.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's music programming (on TV, and on Radio) has been consistently interesting (and often great) for decades. Gripe all you want about Triple J (and there are valid reasons to) but the station does do a commendable job at supporting local artists. Rage is... Rage. It's format may be simplistic to the point of lazy (though it is kind of great that it hasn't changed since the show's inception), but the early, early morning playlists are usually really good (or at least they are whenever I'm up that late and turn the TV on for background noise).

Australian commercial music programming is awful. We hired Redfoo to judge our version of the X-factor (making a lovely show even shittier). Our top 40 stations played this song on high rotation.

The episode that involved the prison on Inspector Max for some reason had a picture that came on a news report on the same tv station as evidence of child pornography according to some Interpol agent's laptop, and it was blown into poster size on the daughter's room. From watching the scene, you could see the actor playing the grandpa rushingly putting himself in front of it and talking to the daughter across the room because he just noticed the hosed up set dressing. They cut the scene afterwards on the youtube version, along with the struggle that decided to have making GBS threads on mouth porn as background. To this day I don't know why they did that. Stuff like the use of sound effects to indicate dramatic changes, or how most shows from the 80s-90s seemed to have raided Hanna Barbera's stock sound effects locker? If not, is there anyone you know who has? If there's one way I can identify anime, if not by visual style, it's by sound design.

I haven't, but that would be a fascinating video for probably like eight people, you and me included.

You're right in that older anime tended to use a stock library of sound effects that has a VERY DISTINCTIVE series of patterns, much like Hanna-Barbera cartoons. (Although they weren't the same libraries specifically. Sailor Moon/DBZ SFX =/= HB SFX.) That stuff is fun, but I never ended up making a video on it, and unless I end up making one for ANN, I probably won't. There are lots of anime with really interesting/fascinating sound work though, and it is a specific fascination of mine, so it's a cool idea.

Escaflowne was a very special show for its time. Coincidentally, I just did a big podcast about it for ANN, as part of our "one ANNCast a month discussing a show in-depth" thing we're doin now, so if you want to learn more bits and bobs about Escaflowne or hear it discussed in detail, there you go!

Past in-depth on individual anime ANNCasts were Steins;Gate, Haibane Renmei, Earth Maiden Arjuna, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, CLANNAD, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, if you want to check out any of those. It's always me, Zac Bertschy, and one special guest, different each time.

I watched and enjoyed Escaflowne when it was on Fox Kids in the UK. Clearly aiming to capitalise on the success of DBZ on Cartoon Network, along with CardCaptor Sakura on Nickelodeon and Sailor Moon and Shinzo (both of which were also on Fox Kids), but an unusual series by comparison to those; not quite shonen, not quite shojo, but somewhere in between. Looking at it in retrospect, it nearly seems a tiny bit like a CLAMP series if the characters didn't look like noodles with heads.

Seems like as good a time as any to post that Spring Anime Season post I said I was gonna make!

So, I've said time and time again that this is actually a really great time to be into anime, not only because everything is legal streaming, but because for the past couple years, it seemed like each new season was packed with so many germs o' quality for such a wide variance of audiences. There's a great wealth of new lovely things for all sorts every three months.

For the first time in a long time, this season was kind of a stinker. There was a lot of sucky poo poo this time around and fewer nuggets. Normally, I'd give you a top five, but I can't in good conscience even give you a top five this time, only a top four quality things I would recommend, and maybe some honorable mentions with caveats below those. I stand behind the top four, though! Just used to a lot more selection, especially in Spring. Used to be that Spring and Fall were the plum seasons compared to Winter and Summer, but that has really changed now to where this Winter was almost overstuffed with quality and this Spring erm...tumbleweeds.

Regardless! The links in this top four go to my reviews/writeups for the show, but all these shows are legally available streaming from either Funimation or Crunchyroll. I'll be reviewing the #1 entry all season long for daily streaming, so that link just goes to my review, but the others link to the multiple-reviewer pages for preview guide, so the one I wrote on any given page is marked "Hope Chapman." You can read everyone's impressions of All The Spring Things here, though! Lots of folks with lots of different reactions and takes. :)

1. Blood Blockade Battlefront (action/sci fi dramedy from the creator of Trigun, superbly well-directed and researched, lovable cast, just look at this loving credit song, <3)
2. MY love STORY!! (romantic comedy, great heartwarming premise, extremely lovable characters, based on an award-winning manga)
3. Plastic Memories (sci fi melodrama, from the writer of Steins;Gate, terrific animation and color palette, promising if mushy premise)
4. The Heroic Legend of Arslan (re-adaptation of the HOOGE HIT fantasy novels by the Legend of the Galactic Heroes guy, but re-imagined with character designs by Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, good fix for your SRS BZNS low fantasy needs)

Quality sequels to good things that may interest you if you dun saw the first thing: Fate/stay Night Unlimited Blade Works is back for its second half, My Teenage Romcom SNAFU is not my bag personally but its fans swear by it and it got a much higher-budget second season, Uta no Prince-sama has a new lower-budget season by contrast if you like shameless beefcake parades, and The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan is a cute romcom-y Haruhi Suzumiya spinoff that I honestly kinda enjoyed provided you're down with "sweeter and kinder TMOHS universe."

So there you go! It's not a good season overall so you could very well check out something from the now wrapped-up Winter, or stuff from 2014 or 2013 etc. that's lyin' around on Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu, etc., but I'll stand by those top four at least!

Oh, absolutely. Even if you're explicitly talking about the Fox Kids version (Escaflowne was released uncut on home video and most people are familiar with that version because the Fox cut flopped,) it's not nearly as bad as what they did to One Piece, Tokyo Mew Mew, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors or several other forgotten kids' properties. Escaflowne got off relatively easy. I think One Piece is the worst, though.
