Regardless of what anyone says about Star Ocean: The Last Hope I liked the music. Even some reviews of the OST I've read where the reviewer was "tired of Sakuraba's style" found stuff to love in this OST.

A Place For Reflection - The song that plays on your spaceship. I loved just listening to this.
Silk Road in the Sky I - An appropriately majestic and grand theme for the human race's first steps on a new home world.
Silk Road in the Sky II - ...or not. The transition in game really is one of my favorite parts of the story. It has excellent atmosphere.

Symetry - An actual dungeon theme. I liked it a lot.
Brilliant Rose - Final Dungeon Theme. My favorite Sakuraba final dungeon theme to date.

For Achieve - Easily my favorite battle theme in the game. A lot of the world and locations have unique battle themes and that is one thing I loved about the game. Having this awesome rendition of SO1's battle theme play while you are on Roak was a really cool move.
Don't Be A Hero - My other favorite battle theme. Plays during one of the hardest fights in the game.
I Do, Therefore I Am - God I loved this boss theme. The slow, ominous nature of it contrasted with SO4's high speed gameplay really did wonders for making the bosses feel...imposing.

Yin and Yang - The best emotional piece in the game.
Harlequin's Slumber - An emotional piece of a more haunted sort.

A portly feline wizard waddles forth, muttering something about conjured food.

Konami were gods at 8-bit chiptunes. They had some really talented composers and sound designers that brought their games to life. Definitely the best snare drum sound on the NES.

This one is from Castlevania 2 Belmont's Revenge on Game Boy, but the clip is from the album Dracula Best 2, which sounds a lot better than the game rip.

The PC-Engine/TurboGrafx 16 had decent sound hardware. Not that it mattered once the CD addon came along, but devs made some groovy tunes with it.

One thing I love about NES music are the factions of fans that it creates based on the traits of music. There's Sunsoft fans, Capcom fans, Konami fans, etc. Really shows the diversity and talent of developers for that system.

I'm one of those jokers that thinks Sakuraba's a bland composer but I have a couple favourites of his.

Expiration from Star Ocean 3 is very much a Sakuraba track but it stands out.
Rust Color on the other hand is very unlike Sakuraba's style replacing progressive rock with a folky acoustic vibe.

And holy crap, Rob Hubbard did the music for Road Rash? I had no idea. It's funny because I worship his C64 music, but I always found Road Rash showed up the worst of the Genesis sound chip, with robot farting bass and nails on a chalk board leads.

Edit: Bonus content - cheesey cop show theme that was nabbed for Rob Hubbard's One Man and His Droid

Here are the collections you want:
Project2612 (Genesis/MD)
VGMRips (Genesis/VGM formats in general)
SNESMusic (SNES and, weirdly other stuff like Japanese PC rips)
Slick/The Shizz/Zophar/2a03/bucky (NES)
HVSC (C64)
Hoot archive (Lots of Japanese PC, some Adlib-era PC stuff like X-COM)
CaithSith/LLin (PS1, GBA)
joshw (DS)

I'm missing a bunch, but it's a good starting point.

I mentioned in an earlier post the limitations of the SID chip in the C64, and how composers worked around its 3 voice limit. Here's a brilliant visualisation of that - an oscilloscope view of what all 3 voices are doing through a Rob Hubbard tune.

http://youtu.be/c1iY-7ZhVJM

Listen/look at the offbeat synth on the middle oscillator, and the bass line/snare on the bottom one. It's a real juggling act, and he manages to pack so much variation in there.

Edit: Christ, the sound design on this one is outstanding. Wind and rain, bells, ghosts, wolves, theramins, heart beats. They even manage to emulate the harmomics on an organ using two of the voices.

Incidentally, once you know about it, you start to notice just how many C64 bass lines leave a gap on the 2 and 4 for the snare.

Limitation is a huge part of composing that's easy to miss in the digital age. If you've ever tried to do an orchestral piece, simply knowing the range of the instruments you're using makes it an order of magnitude more convincing. You hear it on chip tunes too. If you just stack up a bunch of C64 patches it won't sound like a C64, because a huge part of the sound and composition was its limitations.

That last one reminded me of some stuff I've got lurking in YouTube favourites after searching for chip tunes. These two bands have more or less the same sound, so it may be an entire genre that I've just scratched the surface off. They both find the common ground between the cheerful melodies of early 90s shoot-em-up themes and melodic punk and turn it into something pretty beautiful.

Anamanaguchi - My Skateboard Will Go On: http://youtu.be/iCNfYjZ26ow

Slime Girls - Vacation Wasteland (Full Album) Chi…: http://youtu.be/SvfeL9vbfd4

Anamanaguchi - Viridian Genesis: http://youtu.be/SGo8RbY5PPQ

Here's some more random stuff I found:

Scorcher. A WipeOut wanabe on the Sega Saturn. This was done using the Saturn's impressive internal sound chip. The dev team for the game, including the composers, were mostly plucked from the Amiga demo scene. I just adore this piece in particular. It epitomises the moody techno and big beat of the mid-late 90s.

An 8-bit cover of Miles Davis. I think they did the entire album like this.

Yeah, she's really good. I personally just wish she'd play more music from games I like, but far as I can tell she mostly does JRPG and similar stuff I don't care about at all. I mean, obviously it can still be good music and her playing is beautiful anyways, I'd just like the added emotional involvement of a familiar setting, if that makes any sense. For instance, that Morrowind/Skyrim medley she does as a duet with the other girl gives me the chills.

Having said that, I admit my #1 favourite track she's involved in is from Guild Wars 2 which I've never played either. It's her on the violin, Lara on the piano and Malukah doing vocals, and it's just breathtakingly beautiful. Though that's probably just because I'm a gibbering Malukah fanboy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQKspH34BkM

EDIT: Seriously though, even without Malukah, Taylor and Lara's collaborations are just pure gold.

I was just at the Symphony of the Goddesses concert with the London Philharmonic performing, which was perfect except for the huge idiots in the audience cheering and hollering at every single thing. Don't cheer over the drat orchestra, you cretins! :argh:
