mmmmm that sweet sweet pink noise.

also get the ms20 JUST loving GET IT.

I've gotta rehearse with someone from the noise group i toy with tonight, then I might spend the rest of the night cutting samples from porn videos, cause next show we do I want to throw those in without anyone knowing it's coming.

also, i will not apologize right now for being a korg fanboy, mostly because they started the race to make awesome synths again at affordable prices.

I eyed things for years, but until that ms20mini was released I never figured it was worth pulling the trigger on a passing fancy.

I am jealous though of an actual musician friend of mine who was playing a house show for some guy in georgia, and at the end the dude went "oh hey, sorry we can't pay you, but I have this king korg I bought last year. . . I've turned it on once. You want it?"

i mean... i can use reason. i can make it make sounds and put notes down and whatnot. i know how to play the violin, sort of. it just feels like there's nothing backing any of that up.

Do not feel bad if you let up the DX7. It's a classic, but it's digital. You can emulate it perfectly, even if the mapping of values is not perfect.
People buy keyboards still when there are softsynths, and if you don't care about the difference you might not appreciate the DX7.
It won't be horribly expensive. Lots were made and they survived well.

Also you probably know FM is a little wierd. It's driven by little buttons and menus, so either you have a computer to program it anyway, or you lose some of the immediacy and intuitiveness of a billion little knobs

what do you mean "go through"? just preview them? a whole bunch of daws and 2-editors have a live preview mode where you can just scroll through a directory and hear whatever's highlighted. or if you have kontakt you could basically dump all your wavs into an empty instrument and audition them using your midi keyboard

fair though, dx7s and dx7ii have really good keyboards + midi and actually cost less than the equivalent midi controller would. original dx7 had buggy incomplete midi iirc. that said its been a decade since I owned one and mister entropy has probably not been kind

you can always replace those with 20$ industrial floppy to usb adapters from ebay though

like this

you format the stick into a number of "virtual floppies" and select which one is mounted on the 7 segment display

thx! ended up reading those on a trip during free time, incl getting pretty far through a pdf dump of the synth secrets series. i dont think ill be hooking together my own modular any time soon but its p neat having an idea of the underlying mechanisms involved

also turns all out those college physics classes were useful for something after all

best way to learn synthesis: get a synth with lotsa dedicated knobs. i learned on an sh101, nowadays i'd reccomend the arturia 'brutes. they're rly good

One synths and one learns to synth via sounddiver and hardware synths. The pain of getting sysids to match up is the test of mettle and spirit that must be endured before one can truly synth.
