Is it too far fetched to say I was expecting something actually usable??? I needed a cheap something I could shove an SD card into and hear music ever since my iPod Classic died, and a Windows phone was $20 so I was like why not??? I was wrong.

I haven't heard of those playback issues, but music sync is 100% a lovely experience in WP8, no question. It worked great in WP7 and then they broke the poo poo out of it at WP8 launch and have been improving it agonizingly slowly ever since.

This thread has poo poo on Xbox Music and music playback in general for Windows Phone for quite some time (which is not as poo poo as it was when 8.1 first launched, but it's still pretty bad.). If you want a Windows Phone just for music, get a 7.x device and download Zune. That's actually fine. The new stuff is pretty bad though.

No, you're right to be annoyed, digital music playback was more or less perfected 8 years ago and MS still can't get it right on phones.

I got a Nokia Lumia 520 from Amazon when they were $20. It came with WP8, and then I upgraded it to WP8.1. At some point the music player was rebranded from Nokia Music to Xbox Music. It had getting updates every month or so and they seem to do nothing.

The 520 is also the shittiest Windows Phone in general circulation if that helps explain anything

There are some other music apps on the app store that I've heard are better than the built in one, though I haven't tried them myself. I know there's a goon somewhere in this thread that made one that sounded like it worked pretty well, but I stream all the music I listen to so I can't speak as to how well any of the other music apps work.

That is what I did. It takes around 2s to navigate into a folder. I realized I forgot to add ID3v2 tags to a file so it showed up wrong on my phone. To fix it, I have to navigate into the thing (2s), delete it (10s), copy in a new file (5s), and then make sure that it's all synced up somehow. That means going into Settings, Storage Sense, SD card, Manage, and wait a minute or two for the Music app to finish rescanning. And then hope that it all worked. And if not, try again a few more times until it sticks. And hope that it notices the change and doesn't just go "Unable to play this song" when clicking on the music. I cannot figure out how to make a playlist, even using the app or Windows Explorer. If I'm doing this wrong, let me know.

Maybe it's because I came to WP8 from Blackberry 6 and don't know any better, but I've had zero issues just dropping folders full of MP3s into the Music folder. OneDrive has been slightly problematic because it will duplicate music on my PC's XBox Music library if I put it there to stream to my phone. When Winamp ceased development I thought I would need Media Monkey but so far XBox + Windows Explorer has been good enough. I maintain a separate 5th gen iPod for gym music because good luck finding an armband for the 920. Making a playlist is a huge pain from the phone itself but I mostly play albums anyway. I will gladly put up with XBox Music's quirks (i.e. album and track artist tag weirdness for Various Artists) if it means not having iTunes on any of my devices. In your case if you just want local syncing of MP3's, get an older iPod that doesn't need the iTunes drivers and have a cellphone repair place pop in a new battery. Winamp / Media Monkey / whatever can all sync to the older hardware and will force you to fix all your busted tags like I had to that one night I checked "manage my library" in iTunes. As others have mentioned, its worse for the long timers. Windows phone 7 had a dreamlike music experience. I switched from an OG IPhone to a Samsung focus partially based on how much I liked the zune phone and desktop apps. Every update to the OS since then has sequentially destroyed the experience. The original windows phone 8.1 app was nearly unusable. Its now been improved to just really bad. If you want to blow more money on the platform, look for a windows phone 7 device (lumia 800 for example?) Also the Lumia 520 is awful in pretty much every way except price. That's not helping things here.

As nice as the Lumias are, they have limited storage (only 16 GB for the 800 and 900) and they can't be expanded. That's why I ended up getting a Samsung Focus and a 32 GB microSD card for a combined capacity of 40 GB for music playing duties.

As for as your music player, Nokia music didn't become Xbox Music -- they were separate things. I never used Nokia Music much as I was using Zune, but yeah I don't see how Nokia Music -> Xbox Music current could be anything but a wash to a downgrade seeing as how things played out. Your options are: Attempt to sync your collection over MTP in small chunks until it works. (go slam your dick into a car door a few hundred times before you do so it seems like a less painful experience). Upload all your stuff to OneDrive and sync over wifi to your phone or just stream over wifi to your phone (may not be an option if this is for roaming). If you don't like the latest version of the stock xbox music client there are a few goon alternatives which aren't bad. Also never ever use the WP8 phone client the put out to replace the Zune client (normally installed from the store, or the standalone 7 version.) That thing is hot garbage.

I've been reading the forums on my phone browser since the SA WP app crashes on me a lot, and for some reason all of the "normal" text is very tiny, while quotes and italic/bold text is like three times bigger and actually readable. I've tried messing with all the font settings I could find and nothing makes my normal text bigger. Anyone know what the problem could be? It's the same on IE and ucbrowser. I've tried reading mode and it sucks, and SAs mobile version is completely broken.

If anyone is not in the beta, go into the project log thread and add yourself to the list. Remember, I don't use Windows Phone as a daily driver. So if there are issues with the current build (the site changes and crashes something I wrote for example) I will have zero idea.

Okay, so I just submitted a new release for the regular Awful.appx app that changes the database to my new one. Hopefully once it's approved and installed it should fix the lovely database bugs that were causing all those issues for everyone not in the beta. I may push out a new beta build too with the Windows 10 thread view changes, to see if you all like them. But that'll take a bit of back porting, so it may be awhile. But still sign up in the project.log thread. edit: and it just passed certification, should be a few hours. Drastic Actions fucked around with this message at 14:07 on Apr 22, 2015 |
