It's not going to "go down"; the comment about LSU football (among others) is political grandstanding at its finest. LSU football takes no money from the state or the university and even if some of the provisions came to pass, the fact that it's exigency & not bankruptcy would likely mean more cuts to academic programs & staff (no Fall semester seems completely hyperbolic).

On the plus side, there's a growing public voice against Jindal & Tea Party politics at the state level. We're like the down-South Wisconsin.

Well yeah. Boosters fund nearly everything for football programs of LSU's caliber. It's a hypothetical situation, but the no-Fall-semester scenario makes it pretty hard for the student-athlete part to be fulfilled for the fall, wherein football happens.

That and it's become a pretty consistent game of chicken for these people and funding things. I guess I'm just curious about the fall out in a worst case scenario and if anyone knows the protocol for such a thing.

Exigency would likely result in ~3% budget cut. If the university can't absorb that, then something is seriously wrong with its leaders.

But for a worst-case scenario, I'd imagine a "Katrina" provision by the NCAA, allowing unimpeded transfers, while the real scramble would be to fill those empty spots on everyone's schedule, which I have no clue how that would be handled.

Not worse but also an offense. Which is why when you have a favorable police force you can lie about committing a crime instead of getting an NCAA violation by admitting to impermissible benefits. Or neither is the truth and Jameis is just making poo poo up as he goes along.

Who would have thought doing everything you can to not take in tax money to fund the things in your state would backfire! Brilliant idea thinking that taking in less money because of absurdly low taxes means that magically you will end up with more tax money in the coffers.

I don't see it messing with LSU football, aren't they one of the few programs in the country that isn't just breaking even but actually making money? It is more worse for the students if the poo poo really hits the fan there.

The Deadspin article somebody posted upthread did a pretty good job of calling bullshit on the story. I'm not even entirely sure how this version is supposed to be better if it is true though. He's still stealing the crab legs either way. It's believable that somebody told him they'd hook him up but that doesn't change that it was shoplifting. It just turns it into shoplifting with an accomplice.

According to the article, the proposed Louisiana state budget would cut LSU's funding by 82%, which is a bit more than 3%.

quote:

Louisiana's higher education community is facing an 82 percent funding cut if no extra state money is found.

The change would bring state funding for LSU from around $3,500 per undergraduate student to $660 per undergraduate student next year.
That's consistent with other reports, which show the proposed budget being a 30% cut *if* supplemental funding is approved, or 82% otherwise.

A study finds that the UAB football team actually makes money for their school.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12748159/uab-blazers-dropped-financial-reasons-made-money-study-finds

quote:

Study concludes shuttered football program at UAB made money

A study released Thursday by an independent economic analysis firm challenges the claim by University of Alabama-Birmingham officials that the football program had to be dropped for financial reasons, asserting that, in fact, the sport makes money for the university -- and that surpluses would grow in the coming years.

The report comes in response to the move by the Conference USA school to shutter the sport on the grounds that it could no longer afford to support football, especially with schools moving to cover the full cost of attendance with athletic scholarships. UAB also eliminated rifle and bowling.

"We find that the three sports in question did not cost the university anywhere near the $3.75 million indicated on UAB's accounting statements," write Dan Rascher and Andy Schwarz, partners of Bay Area firm OSKR. "Instead, after making the sort of adjustments suggested by the economics literature, we conclude that the three sports were effectively break-even to slightly positive. Football and bowling showed a modest positive return for 2013-14, the last year for which complete data was available. Rifle showed a deficit, but the three-sport balance was positive to the tune of $75,000."
