Anyone know where I can grab a vanos filter for my m3? Dealer wants 30 quid lmao. BMWMiniparts has the filter itself for three quid but I really need the larger rubber washer too.

Get a light clanging sound when my 540i clutch engages. The mounts are shot and the clutch squeaks in reverse as well, which I am assuming is the trans pulling away from the flywheel because of said blown mounts. But the clutch clang is weird and I have never heard of such a thing. It might just go away when I do the trans and motor mounts over the next few weeks, but has anyone here seen this?

On the 06, I just had the dealer reset it when it was there shortly afterwards for state inspection, and on the 09, I bought the BMWhat Android app and their specific bluetooth OBDII adapter. It's a bit pricey at $60 for the app and $30 for the adapter, but I also bought it for coding things like mirror folding, disabling headlight washers, etc. I think the service reset was another $3?

I ordered a specific head gasket from FCP. They sent a different brand, and when I called them the guy tries to tell me I'm better off just keeping the one they sent me because it's an OEM supplier. If I wanted that brand, I would have ordered that brand.

So just wondering if this is a known E46 issue - I didn't have it on my old 330ci, but that was back when these cars were newer. Car is a 92k mile '02 325ti. It had been parked in the sun all day at work with the manual temp bias slider between the dashboard vents left on full cold (3 blue dots), but no more than about 15oC air temperature. When started, the climate panel operated normally and no warnings were visible on dash, but the fan was not operating. I could set defrosters, a/c, fan speed, vent level - everything - on the climate panel but nothing was coming out of any vent. In "auto" mode it defaulted to displaying max fan speed, suggesting the temp sensors on the panel were working. Restarting the car at a traffic light didn't solve the problem, so I was going to drive it home and check for a specific blower motor fuse. About ten minutes after leaving work while accelerating onto a roundabout the fan suddenly came on. Climate control has functioned fine since then. Anyone heard of this before? It came with a crappy third party warranty that I don't want to have to use, but if something is dying (e.g. blower motor) I should document it with the warranty company before the warranty period runs out.

I had the exact same symptoms, first intermittently and then it just stopped working altogether in the middle of a 600 mile trip. It's awesome losing the ability to run the windshield defogger when it's humid and cool out. Replaced this part and everything has worked fine since. Fortunately it's a relatively cheap part and the only special tool you need is a long torx screwdriver. It is a bit of a reach though, you have to contort your arm up in to the dash through the passenger side to get to it. It's a pretty common issue so if you have any trouble odds are if you have a local BMW group a good number of E46 owners will have done it.

I just started talking to BMW Manhattan, they said the cheapest lease option is going with a 3 series and not a 2 (Former 1?) series. BMW prices seem to be 3x or 4x more than Fiat but I am really worried about safety issues so I may go with another beamer. I really did not like my 1992 325i but I really think it was just because of the bullshit maintenance issues that came up (due to the previous owner tweaking things) and with a lease I can have BMW do all of the maintenance work. Who knows, maybe I will defect to VW

Just remember, All Wheel Drive helps but is not the end-all to winter traction, so if you have the room to store them it's worth buying an extra set of wheels with snow tires from Tirerack. I don't mean to scare you into believing winter driving is constantly a loving nightmare but in the few instances where snow tires would come in handy you'd be very glad to have that extra level of stopping power / confidence. A new 3-series is really good, and peppy, but not all that small. The 2-series is a bit smaller but more sport oriented which is why they're pricier.

Really, if you have to have a care, an economical Fiesta, Fiat 500 or anything slow and cheap to run with a warranty is what you want. You shouldn't really end up paying for any maintenance on any lease cars, but even if you did, it would only be oil changes, wiper blades and fluid. Buy whatever you want, just remember leases are generally 'bad with money' decisions unless you can somehow write it off on your taxes.
