Right .... So the fact that the last time a clinton was in office he raised taxes and Hillary has said flatly that it worked last time and it'll work now means she meets those requirements ...

I mean yeah as First Lady she didn't enact the taxes herself but she was part of the advisory team advocating it which is close enough, no?

It's still nice to see income inequality being framed as the major focus of her campaign. Candidates always make promises they can't/won't make good on but there are 2-3 core principles that define a campaign which are only in very rare circumstance betrayed. If Clinton wants "topple the 1%" as the foundation of her platform it's almost certainly something she plans on adhering to after inauguration.

Frankly her trying to get to the left of Warren this early on makes me hopeful of the course the campaigns will take.

I think it's a promising sign. The cynic in me can't help but think maybe it's just a tactical move to prevent any challenger from the left from building up any steam before they even get started.

The TPP might be in trouble.... from Republicans.

quote:

"I'm concerned that we are again empowering a president who abuses power," said Louisiana Congressman John Fleming. "We're hearing something about some kind of an exchange, or utilizing foreign workers, and at a time when we have so many Americans not working I think that's a problem."

Asked where he'd heard the rumor, Fleming could not say. "I just came across some stuff; I'm not even sure where I read it," he said. "I want to get to the bottom of it. What often happens with these bills is that we get the hype, we get the marketing, but we don't get the details until the last minute." Echoing the language of the skeptics, he worried that the deal might be a "trojan horse."

...

"He could open up trade with countries that are sworn enemies of ours," said the congressman. "Before you know it, Iran could be one of our closest trading partners, and we'd be giving access to people who are sworn enemies of our destruction."

Maybe there are death panels in the bill? Maybe it authorizes Obama to require that textbook publishers replace every instance of the name "Reagan" with "Satan"? I can come up with more of these if it will get you guys to vote against this.

I have my own answer, but since we have a lot of posters here who appear to match Matt Yglesias' description of a Hillary defector, what would be yours?

quote:

Try to imagine a voter who is aware that Hillary Clinton has made inequality a key campaign theme, who agrees that this is the issue that should be the focus of policymaking in 2017-2020, who is aware of Clinton's policy proposals to combat inequality, who agrees with Clinton's policy proposals to combat inequality, and who yet decides not to vote for her because she thinks Clinton has adopted this all out of expedience.

Why would that happen?

To start, for me it's easy: I live in Vermont, so it doesn't matter and I can check whatever box on the ballot, like I did in 2012 when I voted for the 28 year old Leninist.

Who cares if they're to the right of the public average? They're right in the middle of what the people in their district believe.

The Bush family is pretty tight with the Saudi royal family. It has some to do with oil, but a lot of it had to do with the personal connections. George W. Bush's nickname for Bandar bin Sultan, the ambassador from Saudi Arabia from 1983-2005 and member of the House of Saud, was "Bandar Bush." It is reported that George W. Bush treated him almost as a member of the Bush family.

https://web.archive.org/web/20060614095551/http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?030324fa_fact2

A lot of the conspiracy theories around 9/11 and plane flights for the Saudi royal family hinge on this.

When an attractive 19 year old woman was killed in a drunk driving accident (boyfriend driving), Cook County sheriffs stripped her body and took pictures of it, in full view of the public with onlookers. They denied doing this for a time, but have finally admitted it, but defend it at "standard procedure" Like, I'm pretty cynical, but still, the cops in this country find a way to amaze me.

Mitch McConnell just introduced a bill to reauthorize the Patriot Act until 2020 in case you were wondering if he was going to kneecap Rand to help Jeb or not. This would take it off the table for discussion in the 2016 election, obviously, and Jeb is now on the record as liking that Obama has kept with the NSA and wants to expand it further.

Why would she be afraid of that? At this point she doesn't have any kind of a legitimate threat. There's not even a whole lot for her to try and head off - O'Malley might try running to her left, but he's got nowhere near the support or charisma to be a serious problem unless Hillary massively fucks up. There's little to nothing for her to gain by pandering.

If she wanted to moderate her message she'd turn healthcare into the focus of the election (and she still could), pointing at her record in support of health care reform while the Republicans only seem interested in taking health care away from Americans that need it. She could do that without marrying herself to any new policies.
