The MilHist thread brought up this article and I wanted to share: Why Cold War Warsaw Pact Tactics Work in Wargaming and the follow-up I always felt that the Red Turn scenarios from UOC were so much easier and straightforward and less puzzle-gamey to play through, and even in WITE that applying constant pressure to wear down the Heer until you start getting rout results was a more manageable strategy than trying to create and seal pockets with Panzer Divisions.

Soviet doctrine is really fun in wargames, UoC especially. I had a really entertaining game in DC: Case Blue which involves getting slapped extremely hard by Germany until around late august / september where you can start to really push reserves into a weakened sector of the front (for me it was near Rostov). Its really satisfying to crack out multiple full strength divisons on weakened Heer tanks and infantry worn down by attrition and rivers then break through and not stop until entire army groups are encircled and destroyed.

Is there a Decisive Campaigns (any of them) learning AAR anywhere? I own the game but I'd like to get to know it a bit better.

What version? I own all of it so it doesn't matter TO ME but... That said, I can't install Chancelorsville because Matrix is staffed exclusively by giant loving shitlord idiot jackass fuckbags and I don't have a download link on my product page after registering the serial and both my support ticket and forum thread have gone unanswered for two months because of their aforementioned condition. I guess now that we're finally showing interest again I'll resubmit the issue and see if they can take the cocks out of their mouths for five seconds to be helpful.

Does anyone have the link to that gorgeous WITP map mod again, the one Alikchi and Windy are using in their LP? I had it installed, but apparently updating WITP to the patch that came out a couple weeks ago nuked it for me and it's loading with the default map again.

Any Goon opinions on Making History: The Great War? Its got good reviews on steam, but I'm a little hesitant all the same, looks like it could very easily be a HOI3/Supreme Ruler mess.

I haven't played The Great War but I've played the others and they are basically HoI3 lite. Very simplified combat and economy mechanics but it was pretty fun for the price. Definitely nothing like the clusterfuck that is Supreme Ruler. It's like if Axis and Allies was trying to be more like Hearts of Iron.

So I downloaded/bought Command Ops 2 because it was free. How is this supposed to work? At what level should I be issuing orders to troops and how often should I muck around with them?

gradenko_2000 posted:So I downloaded/bought Command Ops 2 because it was free. How is this supposed to work? At what level should I be issuing orders to troops and how often should I muck around with them? I find the battalion level is best. Return to St Vith gives you three battalions. Don't muck around with them too much - giving new orders paralyses your troops for a while as the new orders filter down. This scenario is pretty easy, just give your units orders to attack the first town across the river and they will sort themselves out to do it without much interference. Then start moving them up to St Vith.

Oh hey, that's from my Lets Play. Glad to see someone read it! You can find the rest of the Lets Play here : http://goo.gl/bjV7lH Command Ops can get really messy when you start to micromanage. Your officers can usually do a decent job, but sometimes they get really stupid and are just plain stuck. Instead of trying to control individual companies just set sequential Attack / Move orders exactly where you want the Battalions to go. Leapfrogging up your supplies and artillery to Lommersweiler helps later on too. I still have to install Command Ops 2. I was put off by the exceptionally Grogy pricing model.

i lost the war early, but i can solidly recommend end all wars if you are into ageod -- they finally found a good scale to let them keep some of the stuff they wanted to do in PoN (blockading trade networks, for example) while still being fundamentally a war game. it owns and is good.

One thing I found worth the micro in command ops are AA companies. They can really produce prodigious amounts of pain so long as you keep them away from enemy tanks but the AI tends to keep them in the rear.

10 bucks is about a good price for this game. It's a very, very cool coffeebreak game - the kind you launch for a race or two, mourn the death of your favorite auriga and then go do something else. Not something you'd marathon all night, but if you want a light game to gently caress around every now and then, it's good at that.

RPS released a list of "The 50 Best Strategy Games of All Time." I'm feeling fat and sassy that my client, Unity of Command, made the list at #22 - they even linked to my interview from back in the day of Ante Turadic about the game's AI! What games are missing? Which ones shouldn't be on there or should be higher up?
