Remember when JoeB was demoing (was either 8 or 8.1 I can't remember) at a presser using an phone that looked like a fancy portable brick? Yeah that's what they are like.

It's really cool that you're putting this much effort into the app, and the issues you were running into sounded really frustrating.
So I'm just chiming in here to say thanks. :)

If it wasn't for Hearthstone I would regret my switch to Android though. Really weird stuff that is worse as well, like volume management, the swedish dictionary being way way worse than WPs, seemingly all keyboards are either overeagerly correcting stuff into said bad dictionary or not correcting anything at all, MMS being quirky (much as it was back in 1.5 days, likely partly my carriers fault, but WP always worked flawlessly), sluggish performance (clearly there is some hack that is making intertial scrolling run smoothly a lot of the time, but the same screen that is scrolling smoothly is then very sluggish to respond to touches) and generally a really unattractive and haphazard interface.

Not much I could do about it though, my 920 was developing a mix of small hardware issues, being 2.5 years old and roughly treated. It is deeply annoying that Microsoft couldn't make more of what were very real advantages though.

If I had to ditch WP it definitely wouldn't be back to android, although Google now seems more useful than Siri - It would be to iOS. Leaving WP would be a last resort though and I'm not there yet.

Yeah, in retrospect I am rather certain that I would have been a lot happier going to iOS (or sticking on WP, but I really feel the timing is wrong for buying a new WP phone at the moment). Oh well, live and learn, I'll hope that WP10 turns out a triumph and I can just go back in time.

Shumagorath

If I had to leave I'd go to iOS for the granular permissions and the fact that Microsoft wants to further undermine WP by porting Cortana at some point. iOS is really easy to turn into an MS-only device for your core software which means if I ever came back to WP I wouldn't be missing much. Edit: Forgot to mention that the iOS keyboard is total rear end compared to Windows.

Distant second choice would be Blackberry 10 because I'm a security nerd and a masochist.

This is sort of how I feel about iOS. I haven't had to plug a phone into a computer since 2012, but if you want custom ring/text tones on an iPhone, you have to download them from an app, sync to iTunes, then resync to the phone. And volume controls are super odd on iPhone as well. There's a cool silence all flip switch, but you can't lower app volumes unless the app is running, which is irritating if your app starts blasting sounds as soon as it starts loading (looking at you, Hay Day). the keyboard is really lame at autocorrecting, but you can download 3rd party keyboards, which means I can shape write again. Problem is, it sucks compared to WP8.1. And all of the apps are great, but Facebook integration into my contacts added like,11 people. So I have to manually add pictures of people, but I can only add them from the camera roll, and not Facebook or OneDrive or literally anything where I don't have to creepily take someone's picture. It's not all grass is greener outside of WP, is what I guess I'm saying.

From what I understand, the MS-Cyanogen project is distinct from CyanogenMod (which you can download and install on any supported phone) and is instead a software distribution they'll license to corporate partners. So you could buy a phone with Cyanogen plus Microsoft but not just download a ROM.

I'm curious why you trust/like/want Cyanogen to handle all your phone stuff, but don't trust/like/want Google to do so. All of Cyanogenmod's stuff is still Android, too, just with their own apps bundled in like any other OEM, and soon with MS's apps bundled in too (just like Samsung has already started doing).

So an update came through on my 1520 which is now my gently caress-around phone since the screen is bollocksed. I wasn't paying much attention but I'm pretty it was the W10 preview fast track. After a while of cogs it flashed up with a photo of a waterfall or some other scenery then screen off no response. Has anyone else had a spontaneous bricking from an update? I know it's the preview and they so caveat a possible bricking but goddamn really can it have actually bricked? Jeez.

Google has a tendency to data-mine the poo poo out of its customers for its ad business; none of the other companies making OSes have that same business model and as such they don't data-mine quite as relentlessly

There is a nugget of truth in there, but it's not nearly rolled in as much tinfoil as is normally laid out. Sure everyone datamines the gently caress out of everything, but the difference is what companies are using it the output for. Are you using it to generate revenue by selling it to 3rd parties? Are you using it purely as telemetry to make your product better? I think that's what he's getting out mostly.

I think the next 2-3 years are going to have a heavy focus on control of user data and privacy, being explicitly open about what data is being collected and what it's used for, and the ability to clear/remove/opt out. I can't believe I'm saying this now seeing as how things were in the past, but I would be more willing to trust the "new Microsoft" over the "current Google" with data given the current direction.

It's not quite that bad but Android (and Windows Phone and to a much lesser extent Windows proper) are bad about giving away access to location / mic / pictures library / whatever with no way to deny or prompt on access. Blackberry had that kind of control since BB4 when custom apps were a massive engineering effort and it's sorely missed.

Should anyone see an update for Windows Phone 10, you should probably skip installing it. Nothing launches; wonder if that's related to the Start menu issues on the 10 PC preview.

e: Had to restart my device by holding Volume Down + Power, but after doing that it's fine and apps launch successfully. I haven't noticed much difference from the last update to this one, however.

e2: Ah, the keyboard seems much better. No lag and more accurate than it was before. Swiping is improved too.
