I really don't think anyone can criticize the Sherpas for bailing on the mountain when a lot of them have no idea if their immediate family is even still alive. There's gonna be people coming to help the guys stuck on Everest at some point. Some random family in a poor remote village getting help is entirely up to luck.

EXTREME INSERTION posted:I want to be frozen like a human Popsicle and then licked by people with brain injuries According to Tao Jiucheng in the Chuogenglu "Record after retiring from plowing", it says in Arabia there are men 70 to 80 years old who are willing to give their bodies to save others. The subject does not eat food, he only bathes and partakes of honey. After a month he only excretes honey (the urine and feces are entirely honey) and death follows. His fellow men place him in a stone coffin full of honey in which he macerates. The date is put upon the coffin giving the year and month. After a hundred years the seals are removed. A confection is formed which is used for the treatment of broken and wounded limbs. A small amount taken internally will immediately cure the complaint. It is scarce in Arabia where it is called mellified man.

How do you cross a wide crevasse without ladders? Walk to where it's thinner, or climb down into it to where you can get across and then up again or what?

Happy Hedonist posted:Hey, they wanted an adventure. The guide company he works for doesn't say he's there this year but Viesters has been quiet on his twitter account https://www.rmiguides.com/blog/ quote:Dave Hahn calling from Camp One on Mount Everest 20,000’. That was a day of waiting and watching for us. The weather improved a little bit, this morning it was sunny and clear. And couple of helicopter and courageous helicopter pilots made use of that time flying out from sick and hurt people from Camp Two to Camp One. But the big work that they did was trip after trip flying casualties out from Base Camp. We followed some of that on the radio. Our efforts to get our selves out of here, two of our Sherpa team Wingen and Sunam, made a valiant effort coming up from the bottom of the Ice Fall, to see how far they could get before the damage of the earth quake stopped them. They got about a third of the way. Additionally, we were part of supporting a team, coming down from the top trying to do the same thing. They probably got about a third of the way down, luckily both teams, got out safely. There was a massive aftershock this afternoon at about 1 o’clock local time. But it seemed almost as powerful as yesterdays quake. And we are worried, as everybody is, about putting people in the Ice Fall again. That is probably not going to be our exit plan. And now we are looking to helicopter out in the next day or two to get down to Base Camp. And that probably will be what we do, but the timing is still up to mother nature. If it keeps on snowing as it did this afternoon, and making flying impossible. But perhaps we’ll keep you updated. We’ll let you know how it goes. We are safe. We are in a good spot. And we are not in panic mode. Thank you. It does sound like the actual avalanches didn't impact Camp One very much when it happened, the problem is that they are stuck there.

Is it more expensive to fly a chopper near the summit, because there's less air, so you need more gas ?
|
# ? Apr 26, 2015 20:11 |
If all of the Sherpas are taking off, I hope the people still there actually have the mountaineering experience they need to fix ropes and ladders to get the people at camps 1 and 2 back down. Seems like a pretty bad side effect of depending so much on the Sherpas to set routes.
