Since we're on school history chat - what is the biggest historical surprise for you after leaving school? Mine was the existence of the Holy Roman Empire - it literally was not mentioned once in my entire (British) school history and I didn't learn about its existence until my first year of University. Speaking to other people I am not the only one who had this happen to them. What are other people's best "WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS IN SCHOOL???" episodes?

We didn't learn anything about history beyond Texas and the U.S. until high school. Literally no mention of any other country, time period, or civilization.

I think that the main thing going on here it's that History is a MASSIVE subject and, unless you show some curiosity and learn by yourself, it's just not viable to expect that basic education could ever cover even a tiny fraction of it.

See, I could buy this if not for the fact that we covered a lot of topics multiple times. Over the course of primary and secondary school we did Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, the Tudors and Stuarts, the Blitz and the trenches in WWI 2-3 times each. So clearly there was the time, just some stuff wasn't covered for [reasons].

Public education was poo poo and I learnt more about ancient history playing Civilization than I did at school and that is loving sad. I went to Catholic school and the church history I learned was surprisingly very accurate and even handed. A friend of mine had a gf who studied law, his gf brought a colleague from the uni to have some drinks on friday night. Into the first bottle of wine, the dude picks up that the colleague is completely clueless about history. Violently clueless. So throughout the next bottle of wine, he convinces her that the Germans won WW2 and that's the reason why the speak german in the US. That's when his gf pulled the plug.

When I used to work as a tour guide I was showing a group the elaborate tomb of a former Earl who was killed in the Hundred Years War and got an incredulous "Was there really a war that lasted a hundred years!!?" from a woman no younger than 30 who had never previously heard of such a thing. On reflection I don't think we ever learned about the HYW at school, but it's just sort of part of the national historical culture. I don't know how you live 30 years in England without at least hearing the term. e: just remembered - an ex girlfriend of mine knew everything there was to know about the Russian Revolution but had no idea what the Roman Empire was. She wasn't even interested in Russia, revolutions, or communism.

In my experience ancient history is mainly used as introductory history lessons. Later stuff like the October Revolution is more dwelled upon. I did learn that Alexander liked dudes in middle school though

Pretty sure the Hundred Years' War and the Thirty Years' War were covered in my secondary school education. By covered, I mean "Europeans have always waged long, pointless wars with eachother until WW2 put an end to all that nonsense forever, like how France and England fought the Hundred Years' War against eachother! FIGHTING FOR LITERALLY 100 YEARS! Or like how all of Europe were killing eachother over religion or whatever in the Thirty Years' War."
