I'm writing a campaign replacing 1996 with 1969 myself because the Sino-Soviet Border Conflict of 1969 seems like precisely the kind of thing that would hide Secret War Shenanigans, and I was curious if anyone knew of any good resources on what's happening in Hong Kong specifically at the height of the Cold War. I know a fair bit about what's going on in China at the moment, at least enough to keep things cool in China, but I'm not as up on older Hong Kong as newer.

Though it's kind of sparse, this wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960s_in_Hong_Kong is a good starting resource. There were lots of riots, instigated by the PRC to push the locals to overthrow the British colonial government. The Bank of China building, at that time and today Chinese sovereign territory, would blast Maoist propaganda from its loud speakers and was a point of contention for the British who couldn't and/or wouldn't touch it. PLA troops and Red Guards also attack border villages on occasion, usually targeting police border patrols to raise hell. There were bombing campaigns by terrorists using bombs disguised as toys. Their rationale was that white children would pick them up but the opposite happened.

Up until 1967 Chinese citizens could get Hong Kong citizenship if they made it to the city or one of its constiuent islands like Cubans can today in the US but this was stopped after the rising unrest created fears of communist infiltrators. Most of the people today railing against Mainlanders are or are descended from these people. So not everyone is originally from Hong Kong and those that speak Cantonese have an easier time adapting but those who don't face difficulties.

The Republic of China regularly uses Hong Kong as a base of operations for clandestine missions as well. In 1955 Chiang Ching-kuo used Hong Kong as a base for his attempted assassination of Zhou Enlai. I haven't read anything about it but I wouldn't be surprised if the Golden Triangle drug trade, being run by the RoC at this time, had some connections in Hong Kong.

Macau across the river is also a point of interest, it's economically better off than Hong Kong, but the Lisboa Casino, the only casino in Macau at that time, won't be completed until 1970. Stanley Ho is supervillain material if you need a rich industrialist villain. Macau is also still under the Salazar regime of Portugal so they are a fascist state and they do not have the British styled social safety net of Hong Kong.

I do, I bought it on Mors Rattus' recommendation, and yes, it is an excellent book.

China is basically this huge, gaping hole in my formal education and if kung fu wizard fights aren't a good excuse to learn something, nothing is.

Pretty much and no problem.

Crime and corruption are also really bad as well. It's not fixed until 1974 when the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) comes in and cleans up. It's part of the reason Hong Kong is super safe today and not as seedy as it is in the old movies.

Really, I find I like the Cold War because it makes the Ascended leaner and meaner. They don't run the USSR, they're scrambling to get back in in China, they're mired in Vietnam, etc. Plus, I've come to the conclusion that the best use for the Ascended is that while you cannot, say, punch US Policy Towards Southeast Asia in the real world, in Feng Shui, you absolutely can throw some smug rear end in a top hat who's actually a stoat off a building for getting your unit killed in the Nam.

Further, I need brainstorming help for ridiculous martial artists and assorted fighters for a rigged tournament being held in a private island fortress by an evil Lotus to eliminate excellent warriors from other factions by promising he'll grant them the island (and its FENG SHUI) if they become champion of the EAGLE FIST.

There's only one thing in the mountains that leaves a track like this. The creature of legend that roams the Timberline. My people named him Sasquatch. You call him... Bigfoot.
From Brazil, Philo Bates, a practitioner of Capoeira! (Also, he's a transformed poison dart frog and buries throwing needles under his skin to pull out and stab people with his own toxic secretions.)

Bruce Lee. (Actually is Bruce Lee, he doesn't die for another 4 years...but perhaps his injuries from participating in the tournament are what lead to his death! )

The Mountain who walks like a man! (A big bruiser. May or may not actually be an animated small hillock in human form, brought to life by the lotus.)

The last Centurion! (A roman gladiator, who wandered in from 69 AD just before it closed, is now trapped with no way home since Rome's fallen by 690. Heavily armored, stabby. Very good at playing to the crowd.)

I will definitely use this guy, at least, especially as 69 is still open in this campaign.

For reference, the protagonists are a young and idealistic Spetsnaz rookie who has no idea how corrupt the Soviet Union is becoming, a cynical 48 year old Soviet WWII vet who is also a werewolf and very confused to find herself in an action movie, and a giant martial artist Netherworld Rabble gal who is the last descendent of an alternate Atlantis and a rebel against the Lord of Fire. The general campaign pitch is the Soviet Union Discovers The Secret War, Things Get Weird.

The KA-CHINK rule has been maintained, all is right in the world.

Also Kun Chau is still around. :allears:

Lantau Island itself as a demon is the best/worst enemy the PCs could face. I'd love to do a critical shift plotline involving her loving up Hong Kong good, causing the Heroes to have build a Micro Chi-Bomb (good luck convincing Potemkin to do that) and Nuking her in 1850 or 669 to prevent her from taking over/obliterating HK in the present.

Hey, acceptable. The best part of RPGs is mixing and matching, and all the best designers recognize that. 13th Age has recommendations written in on how to borrow from the system.

Though, myself, I'm just wishing I had the money to back the thing. This wait is going to be torture.

Mind flay the gap.
I remember walking out of the GenCon Feng Shui panel last year and Rob Heinsoo (13th Age, 4e, other stuff) was talking about using Feng Shui 2 rules to run Ken Hite's Day After Ragnarok setting. Mixing and matching is indeed what RPGs are about and I think Feng Shui (either in terms of setting or rules) is very comfortable with that idea.

Hey folks. I know that it's frustrating, but we're working with DriveThruRPG to coordinate distribution of these PDFs because we're also going to sell them from that site (among others) in the near future. It allows us to ensure that everyone gets their copy and to update the file when we need to correct it for errors (as I will be doing today.)
Remember to check your spam folders. If you have a DIFFERENT email address than your DriveThruRPG address, you should let us know immediately with your name, the email you provided us with the survey, and the correct DriveThruRPG email address. Drop us a line at crowdfund AT atlas-games DOT com. Give us time to sort that out as we will need to do it manually.
If you have found errors or typos, today is the only day we're going to be able to update the print files and correct the PDF, so get them to me: cam AT atlas-games DOT com. DO NOT POST THEM HERE. I might not see them. DO NOT SEND THEM TO CROWDFUND AT ATLAS. We will just need to redirect them.
Thank you, and thanks for your continued patience as we work to fulfill your PDFs!

I saw that and wondered why The Shadow was so crazy good.

I also found it interesting that cars were reduced down into general classes while guns were still detailed as individual weapons. With only 3 stats they are all kind of samey anyways

Yeah, this is about where I am. I mean, I ended up with a lot of fun out of the 'Potemkin Blows Up The World' plot they used in a different campaign, I love the setting, and I've just come to terms with not really caring for the rules and hacking together my own solutions that work for my playgroups. Still eager to see people playing more Feng Shui, though, so they can experience the wonder of recruiting Bruce Lee to help them rebel against the evil sorcerer running a shady martial arts tournament and his inevitable army of Jiang-shi, or kung-fu kicking a car so hard it explodes.
