SPREADSHEET LINK!! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gyczYXjiTMPxtFrjYiqm1qJIQmj5hjevoWPDwos354w/edit?usp=sharing LATEST PHOTO ALBUM!! April! Imgur: https://imgur.com/a/JiSxC Google Photos: https://goo.gl/photos/Rk4JPrwjYPU5Lpt89 Welcome to the Something Awful Oath Thread! This is the thread for the SomethingAwful.com Oath Thread, a fun and engaging painting competition where the winner is YOU! What is this 'oath thread' business, then? The Oath Thread is aimed at miniature figure painters who are:
The Oath Thread is primarily for wargamers of all types, miniature painters and model builders/sculptors, but anyone interested in painting a small version of something is welcome to participate! Because of its past history, the thread is mostly populated with fantasy & sci-fi gamers, and some of the prizes available reflect this. How The Oath Thread Works Each month, you can promise (or 'Oath') to paint a model or group of models. Post a picture of the exact model you're going to paint. By the end of the month, if you've finished painting that model, you may also win excellent FREE prizes from some of the top names in the wargaming industry! That's really it. There are a few rules, such as how to format your oath and when you need to post your finished picture, but these will be laid out in this thread and on a publicly accessible wiki page so they'll be easy to find. I’m an old-timer, I know all this stuff! What’s New This Time? There’s a bit that’s new:
How to Earn Points (and Prizes!) Earning points is easy. Post a picture of your finished model(s) before the deadline and you earn points! (this is actually where you'll earn the bulk of your points) Complete the Journal theme and you get more points. Put your user name into the picture of your model and you get another point. You get the idea! If you do the theme and correct Oath and post finished pictures of your model on time, you'll earn 5 points in a month. There are other ways to earn points, however...and the top points-earners at the end of the Oath Season (at the end of April 2016) will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of awesome Grand Prizes! Click here to see the current points totals: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gyczYXjiTMPxtFrjYiqm1qJIQmj5hjevoWPDwos354w/edit?usp=sharing But remember! Earning awesome prizes is a secondary goal of the Oath Thread. These are THE MAIN REASONS you should take part: 1. Be motivated to paint all those awesome models you've got stacking up 2. Get painting tips and advice 3. Share your awesome models with other awesome people 4. Have a chance to win cool prizes from great companies and wonderful people These is just the basic info. See the next post for the simple guide to posting your oath and how you will claim points. For the complete details, we've now got a If you want painting tips and more, check out the Miniature Painting Thread! http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3705692 For specific help in building and painting terrain, check out the Terrain Megathread! http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3570772 Confirmed Oath Thread Season 6 Prize Sponsors! After this time, your prize will be put back into the available prize pool for other goons to win. There is a whole post below filled with links to the prize winners each month. Prizes are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you're late it's possible for someone whose name gets drawn after you to pick a prize before you. The default method to claim any prize you may get is to EMAIL krushgroove at krushgroove169 at gmail.com. Please put 'Oath Thread Prize for (your username)' as the subject of your email. In the body of the email, provide your real name, postal address and prize choices. Finally, please see the Postage Costs section immediately below. POSTAGE COSTS Because most of the prizes are sent in one shipment from the sponsors, it generally falls to krushgroove (and Iris of Ether, the keeper of the US Grab Bag stuff) to pay for postage to places all around the world. By default, everything sent by mail will be by the cheapest option, without tracking. From the UK (where krushgroove is based) to the US, airmail packets take about a week to get to CONUS (continental US). However, if you want to chip in as a prize winner or you just want to help out, get in touch with krushgroove (krushgroove169 at gmail.com). With extra help I can pay for tracking to make sure you get your loot. It costs between £4/$7 to £7/$11 to send a prize out, depending on size and weight. IF YOU'RE HAPPY TO WAIT FOR YOUR LOOT Another way you can help is to defer your prizes until the end of the Oath Season. This is entirely optional but does help save a lot of money. Thread regulars did this last time, in Season 5, and with the help of Gmail's email search function and threaded conversations it's easy to catch up with prize choices for various people. krushgroove fucked around with this message at 20:57 on Jun 15, 2016 |

How to Oath your model: 1. You can now post your Oath at ANY TIME of the month - no more Oath deadline! However your finished Oath must be posted by the deadline: midnight *AMERICAN SAMOAN TIME* (not Samoa! CLICK HERE to see the deadline for Oathing and Oath Completion 2. Your model must be photographed out of its package and in one of these states: 2a. still on sprue, off the sprue and unassembled, partially assembled or fully assembled 2b. unpainted, primed or basecoated in a SINGLE color 2c. zenithal priming IS allowed, however pre-shading or picking out details is NOT allowed** 3. Go to http://www.worldtimeserver.com/ on your computer/tablet/phone, select AMERICAN SAMOAN TIME (or click this link) and take a picture of the oath model(s) beside the date and time on the screen. The time, date and location should be readable and the model should be recognizable. It’s hard to get everything in focus, but we must be able to count the models and if it's in multiple pieces we must be able to see all the parts of the model. Make sure the screen text is READABLE and IN FOCUS before uploading your picture. 4. Upload your picture to http://www.imgur.com or any other publicly accessible photo-hosting site and copy the BB code link into your oath post. (note: you can add your name to your Oath picture, but it isn't necessary) 5. Please also indicate what scale and brand of your figure(s) - this allows us to give helpful statistics to our prize sponsors. 6. Hit the ‘Reply’ link and put something like ‘I, [yourname], oath that I will paint this [model name]’ - make sure this text is in BOLD so new Oaths are easy to find. 7. Hit the ‘submit’ button and check the thread periodically for your oath to be accepted! (If you have any doubts about your oath being accepted, wait until krushgroove approves it, or at least 24-48 hrs before starting to paint it.) 8. Once your Oath is approved, your Oath is LOCKED IN and cannot be changed, only added to (see Oath Additions, below). 9. CLICK HERE to see the deadline for Oathing and Oath Completion *Why American Samoa? Because it gives everyone the opportunity to paint until late at night on the last day of the month (unless you are living right on the International Date Line) rather than having to finish in the morning or afternoon of the last day, which doesn't really work out well if you have a normal school/work day. **zenithal priming: If you are in doubt, take a picture before you have primed the model (the safest and easiest option), or post a picture of your zenithal-primed model and ask. Pre-shading, which is not allowed for Oathing examples include panel lining on vehicles or shading on muscles, wings, etc. Anything can be done to the models after Oathing, of course. Completing your Oath 1. Make sure you are posting before the end of the calendar month - remember we’re using *AMERICAN* SAMOAN TIME! CLICK HERE to see the deadline for Oath Completion 2. Don't miss out on the scoring! YOU MUST INCLUDE YOUR USERNAME IN THE PICTURES YOU POST TO EARN POINTS. This is very easy to do without using a photo editing program: simply write your username on a piece of paper and make sure your name is clearly visible and readable in your photo. You can also add in your name with photo-editing software (online or otherwise). PLEASE NOTE that if you take lots of pictures of your model(s), it helps everyone if you include your username in every photo, especialy if you finished several models or have different backgrounds in your photos. IF YOU DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR USERNAME YOU WILL NOT EARN POINTS. If you're only participating to paint your stuff and/or win monthly/quarterly prizes, you'll still be eligible for those but you WILL NOT be counted for the season-ending points totals. 3. Post ‘Oath Complete!’ with a picture your finished model or group (if you're posting multiple pictures, try to use the [timg] tag instead of the [img] tag so they don't take up huge amounts of screen space) - see below for where to get free image hosting and how to post the images 4. If you did the current or any of the previous Detectuv’s Jurnal challenges, TELL US which one in bold 5. If you are claiming any Achievements , TELL US which one in bold and post whatever is relevant for that bonus 6. If you did anything else that should earn you bonus points, TELL US which one in bold 7. (Optional) Copy your post to the Miniatures Painting Thread and whatever other thread your fellow gamers post in (D&D, Malifaux, Battletech, Historicals, etc.) and encourage them to play, too! NOTE: There is NO themed group for Season 6 (unless someone wants to step up and manage it and donate stuff) SAVE DA WHALES! Did you fail your Oath? No problemo, there's no shame in that (unlike in previous threads)! You can also SAVE DA WHALES! which is sort of Oath Thread code for 'saving' an Oath that you failed. Here's how to Save Da Whales: Just post (after the 1st of the month) that you're gonna try and Save da Whales, and then post an Oath Complete that shows the completed Whales stuff, along with a link or quote of the original Oath that you failed. If you post an Oath Complete post that also includes your current Oath stuff, be sure to keep your August stuff separate from the Whales (so it's clear to Iris what to credit you for and where). Questions? Leperflesh, the Saviour of the Whales, answers your queries here! Achievements Achievements are how you can earn bonus points during the year and have a bit of fun. You're welcome to do as many or as few as you like. Each Achievement is worth ONE POINT and can be claimed just once during the Oath Season, and you must complete your Oath to earn the point(s) for your Achievement. I'd recommend you pace yourself with the Achievements, as there's only so many to last you 12 months! If you have an idea for new/cool Achievements, let Krushgroove know in the thread! Make sure to CLAIM your Achievements where necessary: when you post your Oath Complete picture, simply post in bold what Achievement you are claiming. Of course, Judgements don't need to be claimed. The 6-pack! Claim this Achievement the first time you complete a Season 6 Oath! You don't need to claim this one, because any completed Oath means you've earned this one automatically! Backstory Write a character intro to make us laugh, then make us cry. Then make us laugh again! Why is your adventurer carrying two lanterns, a sack, 4 belt pouches, a backpack and 3 swords. No judging on the content, but extra internet points for making it entertaining in some way. Minimum 50 words. Post your backstory with your Oath Complete picture. I rolled a 6! ...or a 20...or maybe an 01...Whichever is better for your chosen game. Create or paint markers, template, dice or some other gaming aid. Pretty up those translucent acrylic templates, custom-carve and/or paint some dice (yes you can get blank dice) or make some other game aid that you have to paint up. Just another way to customize your gaming experience! (To be clear, in this Oath Thread, Warmachine wreck markers are 'markers' and craters/wrecked vehicles for 40K are 'terrain'. We'll cross & burn the bridges for other markers/terrain for other game systems when we get to them!) Box art Copy the original paint scheme that the manufacturer used for your model. You must provide a link to the original artwork on the company's web page, in the company's product catalog (not web forums, etc.) to be counted. Post the link to the original box art with your Oath Complete picture. Speed painting! How fast can you paint one model? AFTER your oath is approved, take two pictures with the worldtimeserver.com website clearly in the background of your picture: one at the start of your painting session with your single-color model, and one at the end of your painting session with a completed model! The base does not need to be done to be called 'completed', but remember that if all your models are based you do get a point for basing. The time stamps on the worldtimeserver.com site must be within 24 hours of each other. No extra points for quickest painting time! That would be too hard to prove without video. All for One! At the end of Oath Season (at the end of April 2016), take a picture of ALL the models you've painted during the year, INCLUDING your April Oath (if you Oath a model during April). Include links to all your oaths (use the '?' button in any of your posts) plus a list of all the models you painted. You WILL be impressed with how much you've painted during the year! Spring Cleaning! New for Season 6! Take a picture of your painting area, whether it's a laptop painting station, TV tray, desk or kitchen table. THE MESSIER, THE BETTER! A valid date stamp must be readable (you're allowed to take a wide picture of your table/whatever, and a closer picture of your phone/tablet/laptop with the current month's date stamp - your device showing the timestamp must be obviously on your painting area). Before the end of the month, you must completely clean, tidy and organize your painting area and post a picture of your newly refurbished and efficient hobby space! The idea of this Achievement is to clean up your hobby spot, so if you need to wait until you pile up dirty brushes and clipped-off plastic, so be it. Need an example of how to do this Achievement properly? Apprentice Complete 3 Oaths during the Oath Season.* Journeyman Complete 6 Oaths during the Oath Season.* Expert Complete 9 Oaths during the Oath Season.* Master Complete 12 Oaths during the Oath Season.* Note: The Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Master Achievements stack with each other, so if you complete 12 oaths you will get an extra 4 points, but if you only complete 11 oaths you will get 3 points. SPONSORED SPONSOR CONTEST New! This is a way to get the sponsor a bit more airtime in front your eyeballs, but it's also a great way to get entered into an extra prize draw from our awesome sponsors! The first Sponsored Sponsor Contest is just for one of our greatest sponsors, KR MULTICASE! This contest will take place in JUNE So...what does this involve? Basically, you just need to do 2 things: 1) own a KR Multicase box, bag or other model carrying device, and 2) decorate it in some fashion using your artistic skill and tools! The only stipulation is that the cardboard case, fabric bag or metal case must be a KR Multicase product (if in doubt, just post a picture of what you've got and ask), your artwork must include the KR logo and your artwork must not cover the KR logo. Every person that completes decorating their KR case during the month of June will be entered into a prize draw to win a brand new KR Multicase Aquila case! Perfect for holding a small group of models for games like D&D, Malifaux, Necromunda, Blood Bowl and a ton of other games. (If you're wondering about figuring out the date stamp for this particular thing, I haven't thought of a way to do the date stamp on something as distinctive as the KR cardboard box, apart from mailing out barcodes to everyone...if anyone has any ideas just let me know, otherwise it'll just be 'have fun!') Challenges (formerly Journals or Logs) Each month has a theme, and every theme will have its own technical challenge and theme challenge related to the main theme. You only need to do one Challenge to earn your Challenge Points, doing both Challenges in a month will NOT give you extra points. Finishing one Challenge will get you ONE POINT. Aussies and anyone in the Southern Hemisphere can choose to use the alternate theme calendar if they wish. The calendar you choose won’t be tracked, but we’d like everyone to attempt each theme so please stick to one calendar. May: School’s out! Let’s celebrate the big yellow school bus!
(sorry, Australians - YOU guys only are specifically allowed to swap around the themes to fit your seasonal weather: January Summer Holidays; February Feeling Hot; May Harvest Time; July C-C-Cold; September Springtime;) You don't have to do both Challenges - you only get the Challenge Point for doing one or the other of the Technical or Theme Challenges each month. You will not get extra points for doing both Challenges. Judge's Decisions ----------------- Yes, this is a painting competition as well as a way for you to knock down your painting backlog - you can earn points for being any judge’s top 3 pick. We have 3 judges and they’ll each be rewarding points each month as follows: 1st place : 3 points 2nd place : 2 points 3rd place : 1 point Best Challenge (must be the current month’s Journal): 1 point So, yes, you can earn up to 13 POINTS in one month if you do things right and really impress the Judges! We’ll once again use The Bachtere Clause MkII: Anyone who receives 1st or 2nd place from a particular judge will only be eligible for points for 3rd place the next month from that judge, but can earn Best Journal points from any of the judges. An oather may receive points for Best Journal from more than one judge during a month. krushgroove fucked around with this message at 10:07 on Feb 1, 2016 |

And your first Challenge is: SCHOOL'S OUT! Your Technical Challenge: yellow can be a tough job to get right, so let’s do our best! Paint something yellow on your model - with shading and highlights, the whole shebang. The yellow should be on at least 25% of the model (roughly an arm or leg on a figure). Your Theme Challenge: paint a school bus-themed model! It's totally up to you how to accomplish this - use your creativity to get the job done! (note: it doesn't *have* to be yellow!) You don't have to do both Challenges - you only get the Challenge Point for doing one or the other of the Technical or Theme Challenges. You will not get extra points for doing both Challenges. Remember that there is NO MORE deadline for Oathing, you can Oath right up to the deadline! The Oath deadline is the end of the month in American Samoan time. CLICK HERE to see the deadline countdown clock in YOUR local time. Another new rule to remember is that if you do not have your username in your pictures, you will NOT get ANY points for the month! If you're participating only to reduce your pile of unpainted miniatures, this will not concern you. However, if you are going for points, PUT YOUR NAME IN YOUR PICTURES! krushgroove fucked around with this message at 11:47 on May 3, 2015 |

In like a in thing, but not sure what I'm doing this month. Nathavarr is going to be early on I think, but most of my stuff is in boxes at the mo so a big dragon is probably not on the cards for May. might just pick up a robed wizard or something and paint it yellow or whatever.

Question before I decide on an oath: I'm thinking of oathing nine Horgenhold Forgeguard from Warmachine. They look much like these dudes, minus the tanks/leather aprons, and wielding two-handed hammers instead of maces: I would be painting them in much the same scheme. Would that qualify for the 25% yellow challenge this month?

Pyrolocutus posted:Question before I decide on an oath: Dude you should really buy some army painter dark tone and a bottle of matte varnish. You have an army color scheme that is a textbook example of what you want to use army painter on and it would make your stuff look really good. Just remember to use matte varnish because army painter is exceptionally shiny.

I haven't used it before, just been using P3's core washes as well as diluted P3 paints as effective washes. I'll take a look next time I go to the FLGS though, see if they have it in stock (likely).

Pretty sure El Estrago Bonito means Army Painter Quickshade, which comes in three tones, it's basically a darkened gloss varnish that you can dip your minis in to quite literally quickly shade them, as well as protect them - just add a coat of matt varnish on top to take away the shine. Yeah, I wouldn't actually dip them tho, a normal watercolor paint brush or something similar is usually fine and will save you having to get all the excess dip off your minis.

Here we go again..... I Grey Hunter, First of his name, King of the Grognardy LP's, Master of terribly painted forces and Warden of someplace you've probably never heard of hereby oath, for this month of May - 1 UCM Phoenix Command gunship. 3 UCM Condors 3 UCM Sabres 3 UCM Rapiers 2 UCM Archangels 1 Scourge Oppressor! [/b] I was going to do something completely different, but Ugleb and I have a game on tomorrow, and the Archangles and the new commanders arrived today, so I got out the condors and tanks from the second starter box I got and decided to throw them in as well!

Ok, I'll bite... I, enri, oath to paint... 1 x TIE fighter, manufacturer is Fantasy Flight Games, 1/270 scale All primed and ready to go, if I'm on the ball with this one (and it all goes to plan) I might be able to nobble the speed paint bonus point right off the bat There will be an oath addition at some point, I just need to find something fitting for a yellow paint job...

Actually quite enjoyed painting this little guy and he was a tester to see if it was going to be worth the hassle to re-paint the rest of my imperials... needless to say, I'll be painting more of these guys up Speed Painting The related oath post with timestamp et al Ok ok.. in the rules it says I can do this only after my oath has been approved, but I seem to remember the speed painting was 'if you haven't got approval, but want to get cracking, go for it but be aware you might get a slap on the wrists and/or your oath might not be accepted'?... is this still the case? annnddd the money shot:

I, drgnvale, oath for the month of May 11 khorne bloodletters (including one that probably belonged on a bloodcrusher) and 1 daemon prince. All Games Workshop, all 28mm scale. My goal this year is to focus on completing an army (or more!), so I'm going to try to get at least one full unit per month instead of one or two models at a time like last year.

The direct link for American Samoan time in the OP is broken. I figure it's worth pointing out since it'll save a lot of oathers a lot of total effort over the next year, for not a lot of effort to fix.

Ugh, I messed up speed painting I got my test model done really quickly tonight, so I guess I'll try again tomorrow and this time I'll follow the rules! It's just as well, because now that I'm looking at pictures blown up on my monitor I can see some bad discoloring where I left some glaze settle.

Anyway, here's my oath. I, JerryLee, oath to paint 5 Chaos Terminators These were built from a mix of Forge World and third party parts, and there's a couple of Scibor and GW-Prime bits in there as well. When approving this oath, please let me know whether painting the loincloths yellow on all five of these would be enough for the challenge. If not, I'll need to make an oath addition later for that.

I'm going to make a curious question: is it okay to oath models without bases, even though they usually come with ones? I'm asking this because I've just moved to a temporary home (renovations) and I didn't pack my basing materials with me, so I won't be actually making many bases until autumn.

Are the alternate universe oaths still in play? I've got 100-odd dwarves I don't think I can do in a month, but maybe in twelve.
