She is going to land her corvette in range 1 and get one shotted, and the next turn your broadside will pierce the side shields of the nebulon B and she will ragequit.

Take the fall, bro. Turn that star destroyer in a stupid direction at a crucial moment. Don't be like me and destroy everyone so hard in the demo game that none of your friends want to play.

This game is really great so far. Has anyone tried out the Victory I (SD with the black dice) in a 180 point game yet? I can definitely see their use in a 300 or more point game but even at 180, it seems like the loss of medium range dice wouldn't be as bad as it seems. You could add on enhanced armaments giving you 3 red dice for each side arc and it would still come in cheaper than the Victory II. Just curious what people have found.

I tried it last night at 180 pts as practice. If you can get a ship into your front arc at close range it's dead. However rebel ships are very good at avoiding the front arcs and only having range one is rough.

If you take a VII along with it might alleviate the arc and range issue.

Having to make command decisions for the first half of the game with your one big ship when you don't know what you are doing is kinda daunting!

I can totally see why FFG include recommended starting orders for the first play scenario.

A question about squadron combat. When a squadron comes within 1 inch of an enemy squadron, are they basically locked together until one dies?

Pretty much. If a squadron is at range 1 on the distance side of the ruler from another squadron, they are "engaged." The rules state (on p.11 of the Learn to Play book) that an engaged squadron cannot move, and when attacking, MUST attack a squadron and NOT a ship. There may be special cards and effects that change this, but typically, that is how it goes.

They are not out yet, but the preview cards for the bombers gives them the "heavy" trait - basically meaning they can be pinned, but can't pin non-heavy squadrons.

So how does escort work then? If an enemy ship is in range of both an escort and non they must attack the escort correct? The wording to me sounds odd like all your escorts on the entire board must be killed before any other squadrons may be attacked anywhere.

Squadrons within distance 1 of each other are "engaged", unless line of sight is obstructed. They can still shoot at each other while obstructed (at -1 die), but are not considered engaged.

When a squadron is engaged, it CANNOT move. It also cannot target ships. It can only target squadrons. Basically, the only way to leave the engaged state is:
A) Kill all enemy squadrons in engage range
B) Have line of sight become obstructed between you
C) Have a ship overlap you or the enemy, causing them to be relocated, which could result in moving them out of range or placing them out of line-of-sight.

If there is an enemy squadron in range with "Escort", you must target it before you are allowed to target non-escort squadrons (except for counter-attacks)

If a squadron has "Heavy", it does not prevent enemy engaged squadrons from moving or targeting ships. It essentially does not cause enemies to be engaged, but there might be a fine-print difference.

Dirty X-Wing trick: Sit on top of an obstacle and don't move. TIEs attacking you are not "engaged" because the obstacle obstructs LOS, so the TIE swarm ability can't be used.

Also, I went for a Battlestar style beat to gently caress look, because what else am I gonna do with damaged paint?

Actually, I think swarm already works with heavy. A squadron with swarm gets to use it as long as the target is engaged with any other friendly squadron, so a heavy squadron would count.

Also, heavy squads still suffer the effects of being engaged by others.

I suppose in theory, if they ever printed a card with heavy and escort, it would prevent enemy squadrons from shooting at other squadrons in range, but not ships. Seems like an unlikely configuration though.

Armada seems to have a LOT more rules-lawyering potential than X-Wing. I think they have left a few too many ambiguities in the core rules, and a few too many rules that are clarified but only after combing over the full rules with a microscope.

Well I work in Redmond, so I'm in town often enough. I'm not familiar with Genesis games, is it also known as Games and Gizmos? I've been there, and I have a buddy who just started playing X-Wing there like a madman. If you hang out there often, you probably know him as the really loud South American guy.

Hoping to play my first Armada game later today. A single core set feels kind of... anemic :(

So, don't have a ragtag fleet in mismatched colors with varying degrees of damage? I'm about to pick up a properly scaled Immobilizer 418, and hopefully a few cruisers and destroyers in scale, if just to have an actual fleet. I was thinking have some with visible, but scratched out and damaged rebellion Phoenixes, maybe one with a Republic symbol, one with green markings, another with purple.

I've started painting my TIE/LN fighters. I have them in four different colors, light and dark gray, Federation Starship blue, and a dark blue for unique squadrons. Gonna mix the first three colors with different washes on trees to get the ragtag look going on hard, maybe have some with damaged solar panels.

Anyone have an idea if 20% off of MSRP for wave 1 ships is a reasonable deal? I just saw that the local game store is offering a deal of 20% off of all ships if you preorder one of each. I was a little Leary of buying stuff at full price from the game store, but 20% off gets it down to $151, I just have to buy them all at once instead of stringing my addiction along.

I haven't picked up the core set, and the owner said he will extend the discount to a core set and a dice set if ordered at the time of the preorder. $80 for the core set is not a great deal, but supporting the store makes it good enough. I am going to a learn to play event tonight, and I might walk out a little poorer.

30% off of MSRP is standard online, but 20% is good for LGS prices- if you want to support the store it's a better deal than most stores will give you, but it's not cheaper than buying online.

The big problem with those ships is that every ship that came in the game was almost the same size. A Victory is the size of one of those transports, and fighters were big enough to be individually comparable.
