If you have to save up for years for one Everest trip, you shouldn't climb Everest.

Is there really enough interest in climbing Everest in the general public to actually raise money? Not really, it's a way for the people setting it up not to feel bad about begging, and to make it tax deductible. The charity gets the leftovers or a flat fee for using their names. Nobody goes "yeah climb Everest and I'll give $50 to cancer research".

I mean it's a long and grueling hike, but it's not that hard to do in a day. Those are the people who need porters, people who don't train for a long hike with altitude gain.

I looked up the highest chairlift in the world, and it's at the Chacaltaya ski resort in Bolivia at 17,785 feet. That's higher than Everest Base Camp, but my dream of sitting up to the summit is dead. The ski resort's kind of dead, too, because global warming ate the glacier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqbt4b2Oatc

Jose posted:I'd recommend everyone drive up Pike's Peak if you're in Colorado. You can drive from Colorado Springs right onto the top of the mountain at 4000m+ although I can't recommend staying too long since you have to drive back down. I was only up there for about 5-10 minutes and was starting to get dizzy since there is no acclimatization Seconding this, I did a Philmont trek with my scout troop in the late 90s in New Mexico, elevation at base camp is 10,000 ft which is a big deal if you're from the great lakes region. We spent three days in Colorado Springs and another two at base camp acclimating to the altitude before starting. Among the touristy poo poo we did in Colorado was driving up Pike's Peak and it definitely kicks your rear end. I don't know if they still do it but I remember they had a pretty good scam going - they checked everyone's brake temperature with an IR thermometer on the way down, and it seemed everyone's brakes were too hot. So why don't you stop at the overpriced gift shop and restaurant for 15-20 minutes so they can cool down?

So I'm aware of the Pikes Peak race, but surely they must have robust rail guards, since the best racers will ride the knife edge of control on the car and sometimes lose traction, right? The money you pay IMG includes stuff like tents and food and climbing education. But yeah, for people who already know how to climb mountains and already have the gear, climbing mountains is relatively affordable, especially if you're doing it alpine style and not having a gang of locals carry you and all your poo poo.
