Choco1980 posted:It should be noted that that layer of accuracy is still relatively young, as I'm only in my 30s and old enough to remember when it was controversial that people thought T-Rexes didn't stand straight up but rather were hunched, in what is now a very obviously bird-like posture. That's because popular culture lags behind scientific consensus rather egregiously. The official view of bipedal dinosaur posture had a major shift in the '60s and '70s to what we're familiar with now, but people have still seen the outdated concept in various media since then. The only real controversy comes from the average person being surprised when something familiar is changed (see: Pluto's classification). Not to mention that... how long have we known dinosaurs were largely feathered? Although to be honest I think plenty of people know that and just stick with the old image because it's cooler.

MikeJF posted:Not to mention that... how long have we known dinosaurs were largely feathered? Oh yeah, they've been finding feathered/proto-feathered dinosaurs in China regularly since the '90s. And that's not even including the much earlier discovery of Archaeopteryx (in 1861, I think). The reason for the localization of fossils there is that, like the La Brea Tar Pits, it was a very easy way for the critters to get stuck, die, and become protected from outside forces.

MikeJF posted:Holy poo poo those cats' manes. Yeah, and for reasons I don't understand, the vet has them listed as Domestic, Short Hair. These two are litter mates who are about 11 years old now. Pretty sure there is some Maine Coon in their pedigree (born in closet, father unknown), but they're a bit runty for Coons (*only* 18 and 20 pounds). They do have the ruff, long fur on underbelly, HUGE freaking paws with tufted fur on the underside and love the snow more than my chocolate lab.

A good friend has a Maine Coon named Sophie. *He* was mis-sexed at the shelter and lived as a ladycat for a good 2 years. However, he kept his moniker. He is also a "runt" at 16 pounds. 13.8 lbs of that is floof, though, I'm pretty sure.

Last night, getting close to closing up the store I work at, a dog comes walking through. He had figured out how to use the automatic doors, and with an easy pace wandered around looking for his people. He left on his own, leaving everyone who saw him confused, so my boss and I went to investigate. We found him alone outside and called him over. Unlike most lost dogs, he came trotting over and sat with us as we looked for tags or tattoos (none found). A little damp from the rain we'd been having, he loved the scratches and warm bodies to lean against as we tried to figure out what to do. Calling the city proved useless, as on a Saturday night there's not really any place that can pick up (or even drop off) a lost dog. There's no way we were going to let him keep wandering around; it was going to get cold that night. So amazingly one of our regular customers, who loves dogs and has a couple of her own, decided she'd shelter the dog overnight. She opened up her van's door, and he climbed in, curled up, and fell asleep nearly instantly. It made me so happy that people are so ready to help, and give this poor old dog a warm place to stay until he finds his family again.
