I liked the bit where The Avengers all shacked up in a cabin in the countryside. It reminded me of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Part of me thinks it was supposed to.

He's focusing on the original Dutch version, which is pretty cool because there's a few Dutch-Language puns worked in there that are pretty interesting. If this song twangs your nostalgia bone, do give it a watch:

Honestly I get far more annoyed by his blocking and camera work than his writing. He's a very flat film maker, he films a lot of very basic "talking head" scenes where character's spacial relation to each other doesn't matter, what they're doing doesn't matter, the blocking is extremely basic "go here, then there, sit down, stand up", it's not motivated by action, there are almost no interesting camera angles, no playing around with the language of film to tell the story, it's all dialogue.

The issue with Whedon is that his camera work and blocking betray that he was a television guy from the 90's. The problem is that it's the mid 2010's, he needs to visually evolve to survive. He depends on writing, but while that can fly in TV, in film, you need the visuals as well. I like some of Whedon's older stuff; Avengers was ok (not the best movie of 2012 Moviebob).

I will see AoU, but I am happy the Russos are doing Infinity Wars.

I had fun at AoU, which was what I was hoping for, but I wouldn't say it's the best movie Marvel's done yet. As others have said, it was spinning a lot of plates, and while it didn't drop any of them, it might have benefitted from being slightly less busy. The Vision was good. I'd like to see more of the Vision.

As for Whedon, I enjoy both of the Buffy series a lot, and I don't mind him as a writer, but, well... Let's just say I saw a recording of him doing a Q&A at a convention a few years ago, and the guy and his fans deserve each other. And what fans. I wonder if Whedon has a guy who follows him around with a cue card that says "SHRIEK AS IF IN PAIN" that gets held up every time he finishes a sentence, or if they do it of their own volition,

One thing I did notice was that there was a lot of sloppy editing going around in AOU. Like the minion bots showing up out of nowhere during the fight on the derelict oil tanker. Yeah, I know they were there before, but the fight starts with Ultron alone trash talking Iron Man, laser to the face, and then boom, next cut away from Iron Man/Ultron, the minion bots just came out of nowhere.

Or another cut where Banner just runs into the fortress to rescue Black Widow. Like, did Ultron not have any bots guarding her? If this movie starred Loki as the villain I would have said it was him using a disguise because of how contrived and bullshit that sequence was. Captain America's doing the voiceover "Minimize civilian casualties, get them out of the city, blah blah-" Banner just shows up in the middle of the enemy stronghold. What?

And that brings me to some other issues. One is that Baron Strucker is completely wasted, and I'd have loved to see a bit more about hunting down the Hydra cells across the world with him as an antagonist. Two is why the gently caress did the Avengers not take any of the Hydra tech back with them when they retrieved the scepter? You'd think they'd at least destroy it, but all the stuff from the workshop at the beginning of the film is still there so that Ultron can conveniently take control of one of the robot bodies and start with his factory building.

Could somebody explain to me the appeal (or lack thereof) of Joss Whedon? I saw the first Avengers film, and I've caught parts of Firefly and Dollhouse. I thought Avengers was okay, but none of his television work really held my interest. At the same time, there was nothing that made me think his writing was really awful, but in either case, it's just that I haven't had much exposure to it.

I really don't like Whedon, but I know a lot of people who do, and this is what I think the appeal is:

1) Snarky dialog. If you like constant teenager banter, you like Whedon, because he gives you that.

2) Lady characters that beat things up. A lot of the fans came of age in an era when we were still stuck with ladytypes who were only capable of being victims for the guy characters to rescue in mainstream entertainment. There were one or two exceptions, but for the most part, that was it. Maybe you'd get some sparkly magic powers or something. I cannot stress how much of a breath of fresh air it can be to have someone you can trust to have a girl NOT turn into Princess Peach all the time.

3) A lot of people like soap opera stuff, especially when combined with the previous two.

4) Also, as stated previously in the thread, he bends or breaks a lot of storytelling conventions, which can be fun or, in some annoying cases, lets a fan feel smart/superior because they get the reference. There is a reason that TV Tropes grew primarily out of Whedon fans.

I think it's mainly a matter of personal taste and people not caring that much about distinctive character voices. (Also THANK GOD someone else hates that "He's adopted" line. I didn't even like the Thor movie that much, but it rankles me on a really basic writing level, since that betrays his whole character as set up in there just for the sake of snark.)

Also appreciate all the commentary on Whedon's blocking and camera work; I'm only now starting to understand how to look at that in movies, so I never noticed it, but golly does that help explain why all his stuff feels so lifeless to me! (Beyond the complete lack of character distinction.)

Hell yeah Alfred J. Kwak. I rewatched it myself a couple years ago. Like he says it tends to be kinda slow, but that's the only major problem. It can be preachy, but unlike a lot of kids shows with similar messages it doesn't (over)simplify the issues. I appreciated for example that they showed Dolf's National Crows Party take over Great Waterland itself, rather than have that take place in a neighbouring country.

Given that the reviewer drops some TVtropes terms I'm surprised he hasn't talked up the mood whiplash of the ending credits song. At least a third of the episodes ends on either a tense cliffhanger or a major downer and them bam, super catchy happy song.

At 52 20-minute episodes it's a bit much for people who have no nostalgia attached to it, but if you're interested in kids shows I'd recommend at least getting the cliffs notes with this retrospective.

A nihilist actually, the group (People's Will) went on to help for the Socialist Revolutionary party. Plus technically he had already emancipated the serfs, the process of dividing up land took a while, and even after the freed serfs remained tied to the landed estates economically. Its a bit of a myth that they killed the Tsar that was going to give them what they wanted all along.

Anyway onto content, folks who were confused about people paying Chuck money to talk about obscure and or terrible anime's might want to take a quick luck at his animation category. In addition to recent and bigish stuff like that CG Clone Wars Cartoon and the Batman shows it includes Exosquad (which he used to complain about people badgering him to cover before Patreon) which is a bit out there, but some fans -hence the repeated requests-, and randomly an episode of Captain Star a British show from the 90's that came and went. Unless there's a Captain Star subculture hiding away like adult Who fans in the 80's I think I can safely say whilst I enjoyed the trip down memory lane no one other then that one bloke was crossing there fingers that he'd eventual get to it.

Okay I'm being a bit facetious there are vhs rips of episodes online so like everything there are fans out there but really this is probably the bottom of the barrel in terms of interest. Which is a pity because the review was actually pretty good and packed a lot of info in.
