FYI most states have their own "right to bear arms" amendments worded differently than the 2nd amendment. The CT constitution's arms amendment explicitly guarantees citizens the right to bear arms "In defense of himself and the state."

The founding fathers and general public were pretty paranoid about standing armies though. IIRC when we had to build a navy because the European powers and the various Berbery coast pirates wouldn't leave our shipping alone, Jefferson and the Republicans (no relation to the current party) were freaking out because they thought John Addams would declare himself King of America and use the marines on the ships as his personal army or something similarly stupid. So then a few years later after we'd skirmished with the French and slapped around the Barbary pirates, the cruisers were immediately laid up in drydock and replaced by a "naval militia" of lightly armed gunboats that later proved to be near totally useless in the war of 1812, much like the land militias that were raised to attack Canada/defend against British coastal raids.

Yeah, it's not as if the Constitution exists in a vacuum--we don't need to limit ourselves to examining what the words in one sentence meant in the common use and context of the eighteenth century.

Seems like it was a dick move to hold basically an anti-Islam event under the guise of free speech, especially since the hefty security shows they knew there was a good chance someone would attack and they could go "SEE?!" On the other hand, it was way more of a dick move to actually attack them instead of protesting or holding a counter-event or something. Or even just ignoring it entirely.

And it was attacked by two gunmen who opened fire but didn't hit anyone and were shot themselves by guards

Coohoolin posted:Wait what happened? What are we talking about? Some clown that the feds have been aware of for the past decade tried to shoot up a "Draw Muhammad" event, but was stopped. There are multiple factors at play here and all of them reek of "that's dumber than a dumb rock". Let's examine a few: 1. The "Draw Muhammad" event was held because there was a "Stand with the Prophet" event the previous month because the organizer wants to be non-discriminatory. The analogy I'll go for is a "Take back the night" event being countered with a "Don't dress like that" march or something. 2. The clown in question has been on the feds radar for a while. I think he was picked up in 2010 for something, as well. He's been trying to go to Africa for quite some time, too. He has a prior and shouldn't have access to guns, but... 3. A good guy with a gun stopped a bad guy with a gun... So expect a bunch of weird contrary points being made about why we need looser gun laws because while paid security did their job, you too can be a hero. Fun endnote, the crowd immediately asked if the gunman was Muslim and it had that Danish cartoonist who got into a bunch of poo poo a few years ago. The entire thing is a diorama of garbage start to finish.

Important to note that the good guy with a gun was actually a large number of people with guns, including 40 extra police officers which the event paid $10,000 dollars extra to be there.

I mean, there's shouldn't and then there's shouldn't and then there's shouldn't be allowed to, right? If somebody asked me "do you think I should do this thing that doesn't actually affect someone else, but I think is funny because I don't like them" I would say "nah there's no real reason to do that" but I don't think me saying that has any actual importance--whereas it's obviously important to say that you can't deny services based on identity. I might not think it's right to do something that someone specifically asks you not to do, just because you want to stick it to them, but whether or not I think that's right is my business and not theirs.

For sure, you should be allowed to be a hateful racist who openly pisses people off and tries to offend them to their religious core. But we should be free to call you hateful assholes and that shouldn't go away because your antagonization drew out one of the crazies who did something bad to you. And its going to become frustrating once those group of assholes start in on their "this is proof that Islam is killing here in America and we must strike back at them here in America" rhetoric. Because it will be impossible to say "this worked out perfectly for them" without sounding like you're "victim blaming." No matter how many times you condemn the shooting. Victims CAN be bad people.
