There's a law review paper that highlights the pitfalls of succession laws by analyzing events from a West Wing season where there is no Vice President and the President's daughter gets kidnapped, which leads him to invoke Section 3 of the 25th Amendment thereby transferring his power to the VP; but there is no VP, so succession moves to the Speaker. But SHOULD it?

It would be cool if they had Frank be the first ever sitting president to lose a primary challenge (which could easily happen given the unprecedented scale and frequency of his fuckups and his terrible communications style) and then had him deal with this uniquely embarassing scenario

but they'll probably have him win the primary offscreen somehow

so, constitutional question: i've been given to understand that naturalised (as opposed to natural born) american citizens can run for office, including congressional-level offices. however, these citizens are prohibited from being POTUS - what would happen if there was a naturalised Speaker of the House and the President+VP died in an accident or something? would the Speaker simply be passed over, or what?

according to current law that speaker of the house would be not counted at all. fwiw you don't even need to be a citizen or resident of the country to be speaker, by law the speaker can be any person on earth if the house really wants it.

there used to be uncertainty about succession with naturalized citizens in the chain, but laws were passed in i want to say the 50s? that codified the rules of succession.

also the changes were involved with preparing for a nuclear attack, and having a designated survivor kept way far away from DC during any important event, usually a cabinet secretary but occasionally the vice president

90s were a weird time, we had people on tv discussing which way the presidents dick bent. of course now we live in an enlightened age where instead we have people on tv discussing whether or not the president chuckled malevolently as he signaled his blackops stormtroopers to burn the benghazi consulate.

Not judging. Yesterday I sent a bunch of "thanks for the job interview" follow-up emails that I just copied from different templates online and edited (~7 people at this place interviewed me).

I didn't update the closing on this one http://www.forbes.com/sites/lizryan/2014/07/07/1132/

So in short signed off on one of my follow-up emails as John Cena.

it was particularly interesting for me as a norwegian kid just getting vaguely interested in politics, 'cos our prime minister at the time took sick leave due to depression. everyone was very tense and expecting really vicious and problematic attacks on him for that, but the opposition, in the name of decency, shut down journalists every time they tried to get a comment on it

i think it was the first time i understood that something was very different in this nebulous entity called "america"

e. by "politics" i mean "things happening not directly related to me and/or sports" in general. it really was everywhere

Yeah it sucks. There was a phone screen and a homework assignment and a few STANDARDIZED TESTS and half a days worth of interviews and that's sort of a squeaky fart at the end of things. Though really it's not like I was perfect on everything else, either.
