I mean, they are, but when used sparingly and only when needed, they can be very useful. ..this page was not using them sparingly, and in fact this chapter has seen a pretty big increase in the number of panels per page that are just characters on a flat background, at least when compared to last chapter by about the same point.

And yet only a few pages ago we were talking about each individual background character in the group shots, DOORS SUCK, characters that we haven't seen since the beginning of the comic, etc.

The page would have taken a lot longer if he took the time to draw action going on in every single panel, so I can't say I really mind the somewhat lazy background design for them.

Yeah, this is a really chaotic and hectic scene right now, and Zack would have to take the time to draw a completely different mound of fighting students each panel. I'm cool with the gradients thing for now because it allows us to focus on the characters more. As long as it doesn't stay this common through into the next scene, there's nothing wrong with it for now.

I don't know if it's the chaotic background students so much as the lack of walls that is making the gradients stand out. I just went back and we don't really have an actual shot of the inside of the gymnasium until back at 341. Mixing in at least a few more panels where you can see environment details would alleviate the effect considerably. I can only assume he's been a little pressed keeping to his update schedule lately and backgrounds are a pretty easy cut.

More muscles equals more surface area equals more of you for people to be looking at, it checks out. Funny to see Violet hanging out with the kids who hide behind the bleachers, I can definitely remember the kids who basically wanted no part of dodgeball. Not everyone likes rubber balls whipped at their faces, I guess!
