At some point he had a heart attack and a vision of the Virgin Mary, so literally overnight he switched from being an Ayn Randian hardcore atheist to a monarchist Catholic. Some sense had been trickling into my head for a while then, but it was at about this point that I fully checked out. A weird thing about the Hugos debacle is being reminded of that moment and realizing he's just been digging deeper and deeper for the subsequent decade. Of course, I recall checking his blog one time since then, and the most recent post was insisting that The Last Airbender was the pinnacle of cinematic entertainment and all the bad press was just liberal Hollywood backlash against whitewashed casting. So I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

My husband and I started our own YouTube channel where we do sketches based on books, and other reader related issues. For example we did an episode on spoilers. I was inspired by Hey Ash, Whactcha Playin'?, but with books, and less SJW. We've only done nine episodes, about one a week so far. The first few we did are rough, but we've been buying better equipment, such as a new mic, and I think they've gotten better. So far we've done Gone Girl, Wild, Dune, My Life in France, Mistborn, Promise of Blood, and the Dresden Files. Plus one on book hauls and spoilers. Me and my husband have a lot of fun making these videos, and we want your thoughts on what books we should do next. No genre is off limits either.

I took a gander, and I don't know how much this kind of feedback is worth, but your production could use some upgrades in the mic department, as well as perhaps a few musical jingles here and there, at the start and end, and in transitions; longer pauses and takes could also do some good. Additionally, the writing might use longer intros, such as in one of the recent videos about the chef god, some kind of "expanation"* for why the girl** immediately jumps to elves and dragons might be needed. Or it might be a problem with delivery, but you can't just tell someone to be a better actor (expecting an overnight result, anyway). Perhaps my earlier point about pauses is relevant. *which is not the best word for what I have in mind - segue and lead-on have also occurred to me **I also haven't caught whether the characters get names; even if they do, they might want to address each other more often by them

Thanks for the feedback! We just bought a new mic, so hopefully the videos will sound better. I agree about the pauses and segues, we will definitely work on those.

I started Shogun at the behest of Hieronymous Alloy and several others a month back. 100 pages in - it is without a doubt the best book I have read since Dune. Good recommendation!

Okay. The main problem about the mic(s) is not the mic(s), but the reverb of the rooms, and that has obviously not changed. I'm not a sound engineer, and you should visit the Home Recording megathread in the Musicians' Lounge, I believe, but you perhaps might need to invest in a couple of clip-on mics, although those might be quite expensive. Unless you want to go overdubbing. The other problem, and there's no getting around it anymore, is the acting. I'm not an actor myself, and there's probably a thread about it somewhere, too, but I'd suggest, with my limited experience, that you both work on your range. When you're speaking a high part, try to take it a little higher, and lower for a low part. If it's not clear, I'm speaking about the pitch of sounds. Or it could be put differently as "Exaggerate". ...Or perhaps it's the writing. I've just tried the first line in the new sketch, and it didn't come naturally (granted my limited acting abilities). Specifically, "Do you know anything about deadly superbugs". One, it doesn't segue naturally from "You read the news". "Is there anything about deadly superbugs?" might work. Two, "deadly superbugs". Perhaps with the right delivery (see previous paragraph), but right now far from natural. It sounds exactly like a setup for a joke, instead of something that a character would ask earnestly, if you see what I mean. One final thing which may or may not be of consequence. Your clothes, with relation to the "running away screaming" scene. Maybe I haven't seen enough comedy, but I think the manner of that run is reserved for cartoon characters. Live characters run away normally (i.e. with arms at the sides). But it made me think. You know, you're people with certain dimensions, if I may, and in the current form it's a detrimental factor, highlighting the amateur quality. But perhaps you'd like to consider instead placing emphasis on your body shapes. With the right clothing it could actually turn the guy into a comical character that could run away flailing his arms without any problems, if you see what I mean. Unfortunately, I'm not a wardrobe specialist in any form, so that's the extent of my suggestion here.

As a man who regularly puts out stuff of objectionable quality, I can empathize. Plus with a bit improved writing and a good dose of cartoony spunk, I feel like it could put a smile on the lips of a person less jaded by life than me.

I started reading The Flowers in the Attic. It's hilarious. Like, every loving page the girl says "It sure is a good thing that we won't be stuck in this room for very long! It would be terrible to be trapped in this room and attic for more than a couple days! Luckily it will only be a day or so before we can leave this room!" I think they're gonna be stuck in there for awhile.

Couldn't find a better thread to post this in, thought I'd ask around. I'm looking for the name of a book that an old friend of mine (who I can't contact and ask anymore) was reading that I read the first few chapters of. It was very well written, about basically this overweight neckbeard fat disgusting dude. It was written very complexly, sophisticated maybe is the word? I remember there being a scene where he goes out to a mall or supermarket or maybe clothes shopping in the first few chapters? Sorry I don't have much to go on.

So, I've been meaning to ask but didn't know how to frame the question so it doesn't sound condescending. Maybe disclaiming any condescension will suffice? Anyway, what is the appeal of this book? Wikipedia says it was extremely popular back in the day, and as far as I understand it's about constant misery of a group of children. I can understand starting it, perhaps based on its popularity, but I don't think I'd be motivated to finish. Or maybe that's because I've spoiled myself on the plot also on Wikipedia.
