Granted, the majority of posts are either blindly optimistic or blandly insulting. But occasionally the veneer breaks, and a moment of honesty shines through. It's cute that you're denying it though; Typical for an Englishman to be so defensively minded I guess.

It would be polite to give examples of these completely imagined up instances that you describe, but whatever. If you insist on continuing this discussion you can PM me. I can send you a picture of my penis as a memento if you like, you obviously spend a lot of time thinking about English posters.

Fair enough, McGrath was one of the best bowlers ever. It feels awful to say, but we got incredibly lucky when he trod on that cricket ball in 2005.

I mean, if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, look at England's battery of right arm fast mediums. Broad and Finn both modelled themselves on McGrath - arguably an error in hindsight, as Broad's at his best when he bowls a fuller length than McGrath typically did and Finn should maybe have focused on out-and-out pace. Still, at the time I remember thinking "that's a pretty good role model".

The 5-0 series result predictions still rankle, though :v:

i love the fact that people are saying that england should play tymal mills against new zealand and australia; especially since he's been poo poo for sussex this year and england would ruin him

although if he's given time he might be pretty good; sussex have a p decent set of bowling coaches

Mate people are saying they should pick Mark Footitt purely on the basis of a few second division wickets for Derbyshire and the fact he's a left armer. The stores are bare.

He was actually considered a big talent once upon a time, but that ship sailed long a-loving-go

For Sound Financial Pranning!
So we all know about the attendance concerns with Test cricket, which makes this clip from the recent baseball game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago White Sox all the more funny to me as someone who watches both sports. For context, the recent violence and riots in Baltimore forced Major League Baseball to declare that a game should proceed as scheduled with NO fans present. It was simply the players, the umpires, and the broadcast crews present inside the stadium. The Orioles announcer, Gary Thorne, decided to call the game for a while like golf - which often uses the same kind of hushed, quiet observations as cricket commentators:

Context - the "green jacket" is what you get if you win the Masters golf tournament in Georgia.

One good thing about empty stadiums is the bat on ball sounds so much crisper.

Are the bangers batting on a different pitch? What's going on here?

Ugh, can anyone imagine the amount of self-interested counter-briefing Cook is going to do after he gets fired as England captain? After every match England don't win there's going to be a heap of tabloid "exclusives" with an unidentified senior England player going "hurrrnh we'd have wiped the floor with them if I was in charge, I can't help mentioning how I'm a great big rod of iron, even though I'm supposed to be anonymous, hurrrh"

Ben Wheeler making the most of the absence of our IPL seamers in the tour match - 7 overs, 5 maidens, 6 runs for 4 wickets.

edit: Doug Bracewell on the other hand has 3 overs for 30 runs, no wickets.
