V. Illych L. posted:it's not about the destruction of wealth as such, though, it's about the removal of the advantage "The West" collectively has re: ownership of capital. finance capital is, in principle, not tied to any extensive physical resources (well, web hubs etc, but that's fairly basic infrastructure), so the way i see it the financial centers of the world would shift around, dragging the growth of the financial sector along with it. i also think that if peak oil ever actually hits we're going to see strange things happening to contemporary capitalism, but that's for the future. alright fine hmm well. financial capital, especially in the magnitude of international flows, is tied to people willing to give up current consumption for later consumption. financial industries - the wage labour that goes into orienting vast bureaucracies of humans to the purpose of diversifying risk and coordinating supply chains, through only-slightly-less-dysfunctional financial instruments rather than supermassive managerial hierarchy - is certainly tied too. Human capital, embedded knowledge, old boy's networks greasing the bargaining process, can all move, but so much of this depends on complicated instruments sustained by states that their inter-national mobility is remarkably limited. if something murders financial intermediation, it'll prolly be automation. Index funds for everybody. No comments on peak oil or the political economy of finance, the first because it's a can of worms, the second because I'm not sure what you are envisioning with the phrase
